Chapter Nineteen

As soon as the policeman comes, I get into his car and we began driving to the hospital.

"What happened to her?" I ask the policeman.

"Someone hit her. She tried to swerve out of the way, but the car hit her head on anyway. And then the loser took off. Classic hit and run." The policeman says bluntly.

"Did they catch of who did it?" I ask.

He shakes his head. It happened outside of town. Not one witnesses except your aunt."

"Impossible." I mumble to myself. Who would do something like this? Who could be so heartless?

"Is she okay?" I ask, worry flooding into my words.

He nods, "Well, she is alive. But her left hand is broken, and she has some nasty cuts along the left side of her body."

I close my eyes and tried to remain calm. I was still in shock. I let out a sigh.

"Don't worry though. Your aunt will be back to normal soon." The policeman tried to assure me. But I didn't want to hear it. My life just seemed to be a downward spiral of unfortunate events.

"Why didn't the guy stay to help her?" I ask, confused as to why someone would ever leave my aunt on the side of the road, nearly dead.

He shrugs, "Some people can just be that heartless."

I shutter, and my mind drifts back to the time with Lily and the sled last year. She nearly got run over, and the man never stopped to help. Never once asked  if she was okay. He just looked angry and drove off.

I shutter again. What if the same person who nearly ran my sister over, ran Sophie off the road and nearly killed her?

     No.

I can't afford to think like that right now. Not now. But it seemed to fit. Like two puzzle pieces fitting together, so perfect, like fate.

But Dani, not every puzzle piece you think fits, does.

Yikes. It was scary to think about. But then another thought crossed my mind.

What if the same man who killed my family, tried to kill Sophie too? What if they were all the same person, the car driver, the killer, the other car driver? What if the same person has been trying to kill my family off all along?

     Then why me?

Why am I still left? What does he want from me?

Money? He can have it. My things? He can have that too.

It was a long shot, but they all seemed to fit together.

"Did Sophie get a good look at the driver?" I ask, nearly blurting out the words.

Silence hung in the air as I waited for his reply.

"He had buzzed hair. He wore sunglasses, I think is was she told us." He lets out a sigh. "Odd, isn't it?"

I didn't realize that I was holding my breath. But I was. Images flooded into my brain. The car driver. Josh. Josh, Amy's brother. His ugly Christmas sweater and goofy smile. And his buzzed hair. Josh is the killer.

It makes more sense now, but I still had a lot of unanswered questions.

Josh, Amy's older protective brother. He was trying to kill my sister last Christmas with a car to slowly get rid of us one by one. So Amy would have my Dad all to herself. And now, he's mad about Amy's death, so he tried to run Sophie off the road.

But if Amy wanted my Dad, why did she send Josh to kill him?

     I gasp.

Because my Dad broke up with Amy before leaving the restaurant.

     And so he killed him.

I didn't want to tell the cop anything. He wouldn't believe me. No one would. Which is why I had a plan.

I would sneak away and find Josh myself.

And when I did, well, it wasn't going to be pretty.
