Twenty-Six
-Emmaline's Point of View-
. . .
Vampire or Mortal.
For the passed two weeks it's all I've thought about.
While it seems that Jasper and I are growing closer quite quickly I still couldn't decide if I want to live forever.
Our study sessions had become an hour long session of getting to know each other. Jasper has told me all about himself, his life before he became a vampire, his old hopes and dreams, the life he's lived as a vampire, his high's and low's.
He walked me to my car and we stopped as we reached it.
"I was wondering if you would like to go out with me tonight?"
His voice was so even and his words were so well spoken, never in a million years would I have been able to remain so calm.
"Like on a date?" I asked with a smile.
He chuckled, "yes, I was thinking that it's probably a good time to take you on a proper date, how does that sound to you?"
"I'd like that, a lot." I replied honestly.
He nodded and stuffed his hands in his pockets, "so I'll pick you up around 9?"
Nine, it seemed kind of late for your typical dinner and a movie, but I know Jasper doesn't sleep so I brushed it off. "Alright." I agreed as he opened my car door for me. I put the key in the ignition and started my car up before rolling my window down. "I am looking forward to seeing what you have planned."
He leaned down so that his inner forearms rested easily on the roof of my car, his face one of ease and satisfaction as a sideways smirk played on his lips, "I hope it won't be like anything you've ever done. See you tonight."
I tried my damnedest to reign in my emotions and failed miserably as my cheeks flamed from shock and excitement at his casual closeness.
"S-see you tonight." I stuttered, Jasper stood up right and smiled a full smile as he tried to suppress an obvious laugh.
I rolled up my window and backed out of my parking space before I took off. I was all smiles and a ball of giddiness as I walked into my house.
"Well aren't you happy."
I looked up slightly taken back at seeing my father.
"Hi daddy," I greeted him as he pulled me into a hug.
"I hope you don't have any plans for dinner because I want to take my favorite gal out tonight." he said sweetly.
I instantly thought of Jasper but remembered the time he suggested was much later than dinner would entail.
"Nope, no dinner plans."
"Good," he hugged me, "go and get ready, we'll leave around 7."
I nodded and went upstairs, it was barely half past 3 and I knew if my dad was taking me out it would be to a really upscale sorta place so I immediately ran into my bathroom to start the pampering session.
At a quarter to 7 my dad knocked on my door and let himself in. I sat at my desk and put on the last touches of lipstick.
He chuckled, "I remember when I bought that desk, your mother insisted you needed one to do your homework on." He said lovingly as he shook his head, "and I don't think I have ever seen you do a lick of homework on it once."
I rolled my eyes and smiled, "at least it's getting some use though."
"You ready kiddo?"
Once at the restaurant we ordered and made small talk but I could tell my father wanted to talk to me about something.
"What's on your mind Daddy?" I asked as I pushed the remnants of my appetizer around.
The waiter brought out our entrees and when we were alone once more he finally opened up.
"I have to tell you something that I should have told you a long time ago, then again I'm not so sure how one goes about tell anyone something like this."
"Are you and Momma getting a divorce?"
He chuckled, "no sugar, your mother and I are still very much married and have no plans to divorce."
"Well then what is it?" I asked.
He grabbed my hand and looked down before finally looking back up at me. "Emma sugar, daddy has known for a very long time, that he prefers the company of men to women."
I looked at him with utter confusions.
He began to continue but I held my hand up to stop him.
"Are you telling me you're gay?" I asked.
He looked around worriedly to make sure no one overheard me. "Emma sugar lower your voice."
"B-but you're married and you and momma had me-"
"And you're mother knows fully well what I'm, into, so to speak. She married me knowing that we would have an open marriage, she could be with someone else as I could be someone else."
"S-so are you even my real dad?" I asked more than confused now.
"Don't be silly baby, of course I am, your mother and I had you the old fashioned way, granted I couldn't exactly do it missionary..."
"Oh dear Christ please stop talking!" I said in horror, "daddy I don't need the details, a simple yes would have sufficed."
"Well the reason I'm bringing this up now is because your mother has found somebody who she seems to be quite in love with, but for the sake of you as well as our mutual businesses we are going to remain married, she's only going to be living in another state."
I didn't know how to feel, my parents are hardly around anyways so it isn't such a huge loss, then again the realization that your mother is leaving you behind to be with some guy does kinda hit you in gut.
"I suppose I should be grateful that I'm seen as just another one of y'all's mutual assets."
"She'll be home for your birthdays," he said brushing off my snide comment. "As well as every single holiday, and I will make it a point to come home as much as possible."
"Don't."
"Excuse me?" He asked.
"Daddy, I love you and Momma but to be honest you two are hardly there as it is, Marta had raised me and been there for me through things you two can hardly imagine. So I mean no offense when I say this, but don't make an attempt to come home more often as it won't make much of a difference. Same with momma, just tell her to stay away unless the company needs her."
"I'm sorry." He said softly, "I hadn't realized your mother and I had done so terribly by you."
"Don't be sorry, i'm sure you've done what you thought was right but sometimes kids need their parents more than they need a house in Aspen or another shopping trip."
He remained silent, and we "ate" without another word.
"Can I get the check please." My father asked the waiter.
"Would you like to go boxes?" The waiter asked as he looked down at the hardly touched dishes.
"No just the check please."
My father paid and we left shortly after, he pulled up to the house and instead of killing the engine he simply turned in his seat to look at me.
"Emma you are a strong girl, and I wish I could take credit for that." He said rather sadly, "I have to get back to Dallas, but call me if you need ANYTHING and I will not hesitate to fly straight back out."
I nodded and hopped out of the car, I waved as I watched his car drive away then I entered my house where I went straight upstairs and let my body fall onto my bed.
'Well this night can only go up from here.' I thought to myself as I looked up at my ceiling.
I had just closed my eyes to attempt to clear my head when my cellphone rang with a new text message.
[Jasper: Leaving just now, I will be there in about ten minutes.]
My eyes nearly bugged out of my head, is it even possible that I had seriously forgotten all about my date with Jasper tonight.
I jumped up out of my bed and looked myself over in the mirror. I had my hair down in its natural state, and very minimal makeup with just a bold red lip. The dress I picked was one of my mothers, a vivid green Elie Saab dress, the fabric is floaty and swished perfectly. It goes all the way down to my feet with neat pleating around the waist and lace paneling on the top. It is sleeveless so it could be worn in the summer or on a warm evening such as this.
It was great for a dinner date with your dad, but it seemed a bit much, maybe a touch too mature for a date with a guy you're trying to impress, unfortunately I didn't have time to rummage through my closet for anything else.
All too soon the door bell rang and I couldn't help but smile, most guys wild just text that they're here or honk even (like Leander), but not Jasper.
I quickly grabbed my belongings and stuffed them into one of my purses before I exited my room for the night.
I descended the stairs and tried to keep from beaming like an idiot as the butterflies in my stomach were swarming wildly at seeing Jasper standing handsomely in a suit and tie.
"You look lovely." He said as I finally reached him.
"You kids have fun now." Marta called out as she closed the door behind us.
Jasper opened the passenger door for me before he jogged off to the drivers side, he got in and we took off.
