Eighteen
-Emmaline's Point of View-
. . .
Bella woke Renesme and I up the next morning. I got up and got ready in Alice's bathroom, groaning as I remembered last nights embarrassing events.
I got into my outfit and then pulled my hair into ponytail.
I ran my hand over my head, smoothing down any stray hairs as well as trying to calm my nerves. I put everything back into my bag, this included the pajama bottoms and Jasper's shirt that I slept in. I wanted to wash them before I give them back.
"If you don't hurry you will be late." Alice said on the other side of the door.
I smiled and opened it "Ready, you riding with?" I asked. She nodded happily and the two of us left waving goodbye to everyone we passed.
"Thanks for having me over last night, we'll have to do it again some time, maybe next time at my house so we can rummage around in my moms closet." I suggested with a smile.
Her smile fell, "as much as I would love to I can't."
"Oh, is Mrs Cullen really over-protective?" I asked.
"No, plus Esme loves you. It's just I'm going to be leaving this weekend, later today actually."
"Do you mind if I ask why?"
"I'm going to Europe with extended family, I guess to find myself." She told me. "Hopefully find love."
"And what about school and everything?"
She shrugged, "I can test out, I've got all the required credits to graduate, we all do, but our parents want us to have as much of a 'normal' life as possible, that includes going to school and making friends."
I nodded my understanding and she continued, "I will be back eventually, and when I do I hope you will have found someone special enough for you."
I smiled, "I'm beginning to think this town is too small for a guy of my caliber."
"Don't over look anybody, and don't be afraid to take chances, I can guarantee you won't find true love if you keep going back to the same guys as before."
"Yeah." An image of Jasper popped into my head, he had been so kind to me last night, but I couldn't possibly be his type.
"And what if I'm not his type?" I asked a little sadly.
She giggled, "trust me you're every guys type. You're beautiful, smart, sweet, caring, and a cheerleader."
I blushed, "it seems like guys only want one thing and after my last relationship I don't think I'm ready to go to that level of intimacy any time soon."
She smiled a soft smile at me, "that's good Emma, you hold onto that and go after the gentlemen you described last night. A real guy will open doors for you, pull out your chairs and constantly tell you how beautiful you are without any ulterior motives."
Now I rolled my eyes, "if I found that guy I would probably throw myself at him." I laughed as I completely contradicted myself. We pulled into the back parking lot so that we could go straight to the field.
"How do you know you haven't already met him?" She asked cryptically as she got out of the car. "Good luck today."
"Thanks." I said as I walked onto the field alone.
"Hey Coach Dillion." I greeted her, she was standing with a few girls from last years squad and a couple new faces, shortly after a handful more girls arrived, Renesme included and I knew her family would be in the stands with the other family members.
Across the field the football players were having their own tryouts but I tried to tell the girls not to worry about them.
The time got here to start and coach blew her whistle.
"Emmaline, Scarlett, and Trisha will show you the standard cheers. The girls will show you the moves, then they'll break them down for you, and on the last time give it your all because we will be judging your performance and seeing if you deserve to go to the next round. Now let's get started."
As captain I'm always in the middle, so I took my spot. My heart was pounding knowing all of the guys were more than likely watching us as well as the families. But as soon as the sound of the music hit my ears everything went away and I went into a different mind set.
The mark in our music hit and me and my girls moved together perfectly, our hips moved smoothly, our arms reached out straight and sharp, our feet hit their marks every single time, we let our voices carry as we cheered on an imaginary team. When we finished everyone applauded us and some people wolf whistled, I noticed one of them was Emmett, Rosalie laughed on as Jasper tried to get him to sit down and stop.
I smiled and waved at them.
Jasper gave me that little side smirk of his as he waved a little unsure of himself.
"Alright ladies, we are going to teach you this cheer so try and pay close attention, and do not worry about anyone watching you, because if you can't handle this crowd you definitely won't be able to handle the Friday night crowd." I said as I got into the role of captain.
Scarlett and Trisha turned around and I called out the numbers and explained each move to the girls.
"One last time, I'm going to call out the numbers and Trisha and Scarlett are going to show you what it looks like all together."
I snapped my fingers and called out the choreography of the cheer and my girls moved together perfectly.
Once again when they finished the people in the stands cheered.
Scarlett, Trisha and I took our seats next to the coach and she handed us each a clip board. All the girls were wearing a number and it was our job to pick out the ten WORST.
"Alright ladies I'm gonna start up the music, remember your mark, when you hear it don't hesitate and once you've started don't stop for anything, if you mess up play it off and keep on going." I called out.
I pressed play and sat back, I could see the nervousness in some of their faces and found Renesme in the crowd, her pretty face was calm and she smiled at me, I smiled back.
The time for the cheer started and Renesme hit the mark perfectly so I moved on.
Throughout the cheer I found my ten easily, they didn't have the cheer steps down at all and also seemed to move with an extreme lack of confidence.
After it finished I stopped the music and the three of us handed our lists over to coach.
"Go ahead and relax while we get this list together." I shouted.
All of the girls retreated to the stands with their families, and together us four went over the list.
"Renesme killed it." Scarlett exclaimed excitedly of her newest friend.
I nodded and smiled in agreement, "she was one of the best out there."
"But she's flyer status, and we don't need any more flyers, we need bases." Trisha pointed out.
"All of you should know how to do both." Coach stated with finality, "this year I think the flyers should rotate with the bases."
Trisha looked like someone had punched her, I know we've worked hard to become flyers, but I also get what coach is saying. It will really help too if someone is sick.
Since we had spotted the flaws in pretty much the same girls the offical "no" list was made.
Coach stood up and everyone got quiet. "If I call your number I'm sorry but you did not make the varsity team, BUT if you are still interested in cheering then please feel free to show up to the JV team practices every morning before school in the gym. I believe practice will start this coming Monday morning." She informed them before calling out the numbers. "Those who's numbers were not called, you've made it to the next round."
We waited as the girls and their families that did not make the cut left the stands. Then the three of us stood up and called for the girls. "We're gonna first teach you how to be a base, how to properly stand, hold your arms, as well as what to do with your hands." I informed them.
Scarlett, Trisha and I got into the triangle formation and showed them what a tradition base grouping looks like.
"Being a base is very important, it's all up to you to keep the flyers safe and we are all about safety first, that is why we never perform any stunts without using the trio or quad base formation, just incase the flyer falls you will have three if not four people to catch her, one on each side as well as the one in the back and possibly front." I stated then I stepped out from the back and pointed out small things about Trisha and Scarlett's posture while still in their "base stance" to the girls before we moved onto the flyers.
"Now I know it looks cool and once you get use to it, it's really fun. But again we're all about safety, so I want you guys to break up into groups of four and you will each take turns being the base and the flyer, my ladies and I will be going around and helping you but only a bit, we'll also be cutting more people."
The girls moved around and got into their little groups.
"Alright bases get into formation and flyers be ready to go up. On my whistle, three two *whistle*." The girls moved around carefully and soon enough some girls went up while others took their time to get it right.
"Straight arms flyers, they will help you keep your balance." I shouted, "bases don't lock your knees."
Trisha and Scarlett walked around and adjusted a few things while coach and I took notes.
"Alright come on down and switch out!" I ordered. Once again the girls moved around and now a new batch of girls went up, coach and I took down more notes. We continued this process until every girl had a turn to go up.
"This one was a lot harder." I stated before Trisha and Scarlett came back with their own notes.
"Thanks for coming out ladies." I said as I stood in front of the stands, "we have some tough decisions to make but rest assured that you all did wonderful. If you made the team I will personally be calling you tonight between 7 and 8 to congratulate and welcome you to the team as well as inform you about our first practice." I smiled, "now go on home with your families, you should all feel very proud of your hard work displayed here today."
"I'll text you the list of our new squad members." Coach said as she came up behind me. "Go on home kiddo."
I smiled and nodded.
"Walk you to your car?"
I looked up and saw Jasper, I smiled, he really has a way of making me forget how to breath as well as act.
"T-thanks."
He chuckled at my stutter and I internally scolded myself.
"That was a good practice out there." He said.
"Yeah the girls were great."
He nodded and we reached my car.
"How's your leg?" He asked as he looked down and looked at the perfect square bandage on my leg.
"Oh it's good, Dr Cullen said it was just a scratch, I shouldn't have a scar or anything." I said as if it was nothing.
"I'm glad you're alright, and I wanted to apologize for, well for seeing you in that state last night."
I smiled, he was nice to apologize, it wasn't like it was his fault or anything. "Oh it's okay, no harm done." I assured him, "thanks for saving me, and being a gentleman about the whole situation. I have you shirt still, I wanted to wash it before I give it back though."
He gave me that side smirk I was quickly growing use to, "you can just go ahead and keep it, incase you find yourself in a similar situation."
I giggled and pressed the unlock button on my keys and he opened the drivers side door for me.
I heard the light ping of a new text once again and I opened the message, I smiled and got in. He closed my door and I rolled down my window. "Just so you know, Ness made the team."
He gave me one of his rare full smiles and I couldn't help but smile along with him.
A part of me wanted him to just lean into my window and kiss me, but I knew that wasn't going to happen so instead I just told him i'd see him around and left.
