5. The Boys Are Back In Town

I walk through the packed parking lot to find my car. Darren has gone back to work and I have to go back home now. I need to return to my regular schedule. I can't let this throw me off. I need to let everything go back to normal.

I scroll through my phone as I walk through the lot, avoiding eye contact with strangers. My dad has messaged me a ton of times since I last looked. I also have a few missed calls and voicemails from numbers I do not yet have in my contacts.

I click on one of the voicemails and hold the phone up to my ear to listen to a message that is probably just a telemarketer foolishly trying to sell me something I don't need. "Hi Ciara. It's Chris. I just wanted to reach out and-" I pull the phone away from my ear and delete the voicemail before throwing my phone in my bag. I don't need to listen to the rest of whatever it is he had to say in that message.

He's not worth it.

I unlock my car angrily and sit down inside, gripping in to the wheel tightly. I grab onto the gear shift and put the car into drive so I can leave. Almost as soon as the gears switch, my phone buzzes in my bag.

I groan and put the car back into park. I grab the phone back out, lifting it up to my ear as I answer the call. "What the hell do you want?!" I shout into the microphone.

"Well damn, Ciara. I was just calling to see if you were still picking Fiona up and watching her while I go out tonight?" My sister asks on the other end of the call.

"Oh, yeah that's fine. I'll be right over." I nod and put the car back into drive. "I'm sorry. I'm just- I'll explain later I guess."

"Okay. You are crazy, girl. See you soon." Casey laughs and hangs up the phone. I throw the phone in my passenger seat and continue driving.

I speed all the way to my sister's house. I don't want to keep her waiting any longer. I am already late to pick her daughter up.

I park the car in her driveway and lock it as I walk up the walkway to her porch. I enter the house without knocking or ringing the bell, something both of us have always done when coming over to the other's house.

"Hey Fi!" I yell with excitement when the seven year old runs down the stairs to greet me. I bend down to hug her as she slams her small body into mine.

Casey follows closely behind. She runs out from the kitchen and throws her arms around me.

"Hey!" Casey smiles.

"Are you all packed to go to my house?" I ask the energetic little girl. "Yeah?" I smile when she nods adamantly.

"Can I talk to you for a minute?" Casey asks, giving me a concerned look.

"Yeah, sure." I reply to Casey then return my focus to Fiona. "Okay. Give me a second to talk to your mom and we will go." I pat Fiona's little brunette head of hair.

Casey pulls me aside into another room where Fiona can not hear us talk.

"What's going on with you? Are you off your meds or something? You sounded so strange on the phone. If you aren't feeling well, you don't have to take her. I'll go out another time. Or I'll hire a sitter or something. I don't mind, really." Casey asks, trying to figure out what my outburst was about. "I could even drop her off at Dad's office."

"Don't take her to the office!" I shout. surprising myself and Casey. "No," I shake my head. It's not that. "The boys are back in town." I have no clue if our father told her or not. My sister was never as close to them as I was. She may know exactly what I am talking about or she will be clueless. Either way, I need to talk to someone about it or else I am going to go crazy.

"I love that song!" Casey smiles and begins humming the very famous tune.

"No no! Not the song!" I fight the urge to laugh at her. "The boys. The band we lived with, they are here." I explain further after realizing she did not understand what I meant.

Casey's jaw drops and her face loses all of its color. "They are? All of them?" She asks.

"All three of them. Yeah. It's crazy, right?" I ask, glad we are on the same wavelength now. I don't know what I would do if she still didn't understand.

"No wonder you are so out of whack!" Casey nods, all of the color returning to her face. "Did you tell Darren yet?"

I nod my head. "I had to. I couldn't leave him in the dark about all this. It was bound to come up at some point. Also we went to lunch and I assaulted him with compliments. He knew something was up so I had to come clean." I joke to lighten my mood. I need to stop stressing so badly over this. It isn't my problem to worry about.

"It's a good thing you told him." Casey smiles and grabs my hand.

"Okay! Enough about this. Go out. Have some fun. You deserve it!" I wave my sister out the door.

"Yes yes! I'll be late. Thank you so much for taking her!" Casey laughs and waves goodbye to her daughter as she leaves the house.

"Okay." I sigh with a smile. "Are you ready to have some fun?" I ask Fiona whose face lights up with joy.
