Shark Out of Water
Rin opened the door to his dorms and threw down a bag full of snacks. "Sousuke, I'm back with some stuff." Sousuke, who had been listening to music, pulled off an earbud and looked at his roommate.
"Why do you have stuff?" he asked. Rin shrugged and pulled out a box of Pocky before tossing Sousuke the bag.
"Gou had left some food for me at the swim office. By the way, Nitori said that you left early. What happened?"
Sousuke got up and stretched, groaning in the process. "Yeah... About that, I was just feelin' tired. I have a test to study for. It's not like my entire life is about swimming anymore."
Angrily, Rin threw the empty box at him. "Shut up! I freakin' cried for you, and this is how you treat swimming? You're an idiot!" Rin turned in frustration and fell onto his bunk. "Did you lay on my bed, too? Oh my God, Sousuke, I hate you soooo much!"
Sousuke sighed. "Whatever, Rin. Be a total brat." He rummaged through the bag and pulled out a Ramune soda bottle. He popped it open and turned to ignore Rin.
Rin, noticing his partner's unusual quietness, peeked over his arm. "Still," pouted Rin, "why'd you leave practice early?"
"Didn't feel like swimming. I have a lot of stuff on my mind."
The taller boy tapped his pencil against his desk. Rin got up and leaned against the desk. "Is it [Name]?"
Sousuke nodded. Rin sighed. "It's not like we can do anything about it. So, what if she identifies as a male? She's still our friend."
"It's not that. It's just that why does she choose to go to Samezuka as male. Like, it could hurt her reputation if people find out."
Rin nodded. "Yeah, that makes sense... But, we'll have to keep her secret safe. We're the only ones who know, so we'll keep it at that, right?"
"Sure, but you have to let me figure out why. I have to know why." Sousuke leaned back in his chair and stretched. "I'll ask [Name]. If we're friends, she'll eventually will have to tell us."
The next day, [Name] was on the roof of the school as usual. She was sipping a box of juice and was trying to admire the view. She had finally come clean about her identity, and hopefully it would stay like that until she graduated. She prayed that those two shark boys wouldn't say anything.
"Oi! [Name]-chan? Are you up here?" [Name] heard the familiar voice of the swim captain and began to think about running away. Unfortunately, Rin had spotted her before she could pull anymore pranks.
"Good! You're not dead or anything." Rin swung an arm around her and brought her close to him. He smiled childishly at her. "We wanted to hang out with you today. Are you okay with that?"
"As if you aren't okay with Sousuke? It's cool, as long as Sousuke's fine with his boyfriend leaving him." [Name] smirked at Sousuke, who only groaned in frustration.
"There's nothing wrong with being gay, Sou-chan."
"If that's right, then you wouldn't mind explaining why you've come to this school," retorted Sousuke.
[Name] paused. Man, she thought Sousuke was mean, but not sassy. He was sassy, salty, and sour. "Geez, sorry."
"No, [Name]. I mean it. If we're friends, I'll tell you whether I'm gay or not. Then, in exchange, you'll tell my your purpose for being here. No hard feelings. Only the truth." Sousuke shrugged his shoulders, making it seem like it wasn't such a big deal.
[Name] pulled Rin off of her. "Let me think this through..." She paused. "Yeah, sure. Why not?"
Rin jumped in the middle of the two tense students. "Woah, woah. Hey! We're friends, right?"
"Friends trust each other to the point where they can tell each other their secrets," spat Sousuke.
"And, some people should be less spicy, Mr. Habanero-Pants."
Sousuke and [Name] glared at each other. Rin swore he could see electricity waves between them.
Firmly holding his stiff stature, Sousuke folded his arms over his chest. "I'll go first. I am 100% straight*. Go figure, [Name]."
"Fine, Sou-chan. Since you're so mean to me, I'll give you an explanation." She swiftly turned around and made a dramatic gesture. "I came to Samezuka because I wanted to live life to its fullest!"
The whale-shark swimmer rolled his eyes. "There's gotta be a better reason than that."
"Same with your love for Rin. Or, do you like me?" [Name] spat sarcastically.
Sousuke blushed. "Whatever. This is stupid. Come on, Rin. We'll eat lunch with Nitori or somethin'." He grabbed Rin's arm, and they stumbled together out the door.
"Bye, Sousu-dork. You're a shark out of water, anyways~." cooed [Name].
