CHAPTER ONE
THE autumn leaves crunch underneath the heavy weight of my boots. Autumn arrived barely week ago but it had already made all the trees look like a variety of colorful paint had splattered itself across the leaves.
I inhale the fresh air of the early morning. Dawn is the most beautiful time to walk in the forest, especially with a gun in your hand and a certain prey in mind. Dew is in the air, making the forest humid around me. I hear a low growl coming from my left and I quickly crouch down, spotting a brown beast a few meters away from me.
It's feasting on a rabbit and with a scrunch of my nose I notice the red blood gushing everywhere. I point my gun at the wolf, feeling my breathing steadying.
This is the thing I've been doing for the past two years after my parents were shred to pieces by these monsters. Even if the king didn't give out prices for killing wolves, I would still kill them out of revenge. They've been roaming around in these woods for years, murdering people who'd dare to enter their territory.
My parents decided to live in the woods because they were lumberjacks, ignoring the multiple warnings the townsfolks gave them. My little brother and sister were never allowed to play outside and had to go to town if they wanted to play. I got to cut down trees with my parents which made me grow into a strong man. I was also taught how to work my way around a gun.
I close one eye and stick out my tongue, a habit that acts up when I'm concentrating.
The loud sound of the gun resonates through the woods as the bullet lands in the wolf's side. The creature drops onto one side and I carefully approach him, aiming my gun to his head. The yellow eyes watch me with venom like I did something wrong. They are the wrong ones here, killing innocent lives.
Before I can pull the trigger a nearby noise freezes me on the spot. With quick movements I turn around to come face to face with a big black wolf standing only a few feet away from me, nearing me dangerously with a low growl.
I point the gun at him but hear the wolf behind me already getting up. I'm now between two dangerous wolves, I realize, and if I'm not careful I may lose a limb or two. I back away, gulping.
Fuck
The black wolf makes a move at me and I pull the trigger, hitting him in the side but he doesn't seem to care. He charges forward, making a big leap, both paws pushing me down onto the ground. I fight against the big monster on top of me but the claws deep digger into my skin the more I struggle.
His saliva lands on my face and I want to gag but the fear keeps me frozen. My gun has fallen somewhere and I try my best to reach it but the wolf's paw is blocking my path. The wolf looks at the brown wolf almost with worry and the brown one dashes away.
I'm sure I'm going crazy because the black wolf's eyes flash red for a split second, the color immediately changing back to its original black. The wolf jumps off me and for a split second I think of escaping before it grabs my leg with its teeth.
I start screaming, not out of pain, because his teeth barely scratch me, but out of anguish. He starts dragging me across the ground, the branches scratching my back and I feel cuts being made. I try to wiggle out of his mouth but it only ends in pain as he tightens its grip on my leg.
Where is he taking me?
After what seems like hours he drops my leg. I try to jump up but the wolf's faster and head buts me, dragging me into unconsciousness.
»»----- 🌙 -----«
I don't recommend awakening after being head butted by a giant wolf. My head's pounding like a wrecking ball is making it his home and my back aches, probably cut open and bruised from being dragged through the forest.
The light around me hurts my head and I can only squint my eyes and look around confused. Where am I? Instead of finding myself in the wolf's den, I find myself in a house- a nice one at that. The interior is basic and it only has black and white furniture.
A big window on my right looks out on the forest with a big lake shimmering somewhere behind the trees. The sunlight comes down from the ceiling which is mostly made out of glass. I try to get out of the highly comfortable couch but my limbs ache in protest. The house seems to be built deep inside the woods. I didn't know people lived here. Did they save me from the wolf?
Someone in the rooms clears their throat making me jump up, the action ending up with making me groan in pain. The nearby sound had come from behind me so with much struggle I manage to turn around.
A man, seemingly around my age, with long black hair and dark eyes stares at me with some sort of menacing expression. It could be evident that he is the owner of the place as he too is only wearing too colors, a white shirt and black trousers.
We maintain eye contact for a moment until I can't handle the harsh stare anymore and avoid his gaze. "Where am I?". I try to ask, being oddly scared of the man.
"Did I allow you to speak?" He speaks with a very low voice making shivers run down my spine. I shake my head, not daring to speak anymore.
"Do you know where you are?". He asks and I shake my head again. "Good. You'll be here for a long time anyway"
At his my heart starts thudding loudly. I drag my body out of the couch and back away from the man, my legs hitting the coffee table behind me. "W-What? No! I need to go back to my siblings-"
"Silence!". The guy suddenly yells, his eyes flashing red. My eyes widen and I stumble backwards, falling over the coffee table. I make a plan to dash out of the door at my left but before I can reach it I'm thrown against the wall, my back hitting it painfully. I groan, letting my head fall. I feel my arms being pinned against the cold surface.
"Y-you have red eyes", I stutter, not daring to look into his eyes. What is he? Where am I?
"You really have no idea who I am, do you?". The dark figure chuckles.
The gears in my head start turning.
Red eyes. The wolf's eyes also flashed red! But it couldn't be? How could that wolf be this man? It was thing from myths and fairytales.
"You can't be". I refuse to believe what he's trying to make me say.
"Really?" He seems to be amused at my denial and grins, his teeth growing, showing off his canines My eyes widen as I can make out the canines showing and then it all falls in place.
"Ah, you figured it out. Good! I'm usually pretty bad in convincing people so I just remove their limbs, limb by limb with my teeth until they believe me. Usually they've already died by then".
The man had said this so casually but it had made my blood run cold. "What?" I squeak in terror.
He laughs but it doesn't seem friendly at all. " Don't be afraid little one. I'm not planning on killing you yet."
That doesn't sound convincing or relieving.
"You know, I don't get angry often." He starts telling, releasing one arm to give me more space to breath. "But when a weak little human who thinks he's something big once he carries a gun, shoots my best friend, I tend to get a bit angry." The arm that he had dropped was now around my neck and I gasped at the sudden action. And here I thought I was getting breather.
"B-best friend?" I wheeze, confused what he's talking about. Then, realization hits me. "The brown wolf? He's human too!?"
The man chuckles and finally releases the pressure on my neck. "Every wolf in this forest is human. We usually call ourselves werewolves or shape shifters."
My legs start to wobble.
I killed so many wolves. I killed so many humans. I killed humans. I killed...
I'm a murderer.
I feel bile raising in my stomach. The man frowns when he realizes how much my face has paled. He takes a step backwards and watches me run to the trashcan which is next to a desk in the room and throw up until I can't throw up anymore. My eyes sting by the awful taste.
I feel tears running down my cheeks. I don't know what the guy is thinking as he sees me sobbing and thrashing around on the ground. I'm suddenly hauled up by strong arms and placed on the couch. He crouches down and looks me in the eye. "What has gotten into you?", he asks.
"I-I'm a murderer." I mumble, more tears threatening to fall.
"Obviously. But us wolves are murderers too", he says. "You really didn't know about the existence of us werewolves?"
I shake my head, looking at my lap. "Wolves killed my parents, they were shred to pieces when me and my siblings arrived back home. I've been trying to satisfy my revenge by killing every wolf on my way, not knowing they were h-human." I almost throw up the last word.
"Well, I guess you'll be seeing a lot of werewolves from now on". He stands up. I look up to him confused. "What do you mean?"
He smirks and the cold has settled into my bones again. "You're staying here. You're not leaving. Ever."
