Chapter 9
Meadowkit at the top!
Amberpaw gazed at Fernwhisper's burned pelt and grief stricken expression. "I'm sorry you had to see that with your own eyes." She mewed sympathetically.
Fernwhisper sighed, "I know, but at least I went. If I hadn't, both Blazestar and Meadowkit would be dead."
A gentle snore sounded beside Fernwhisper. Amberpaw let out a purr of laughter. In the quarter moon since the fire, Reedthicket had stayed at Fernwhispers side throughout her slow recovery. Amberpaw finished re-plastering the soaking moss bundle to Fernwhispers pelt before turning and padding away to check on Meadowkit. Her breathing had recovered since the fire and she was almost as lively as Fallowkit again. Amberpaw gave Meadowkit her daily dose of Coltsfoot and moved around the clearing. She repaired herb poultices and eased cat's breathing. Most cats didn't complain for they were overtaken by grief. After the fire had died down, Cherrystar had counted the cats and they realized that Macgyver, Mistfeather, and Cherrytail had died in the fire along with Blazestar. Amberpaw felt bad for Waspkit, Doekit, Fallowkit, and Meadowkit for they had no father.
Cherrystar had received her nine lives the night before with Fidgetfoot while Amberpaw had stayed in their makeshift camp, patching wounds.
"Let all cats, old enough to climb trees gather to hear my words." Cherrystar's mew rang out across the clearing. Once what was remaining of Skyclan had gathered, Cherrystar lifted her muzzle to the stars, "I say these words before starclan, that they may hear and approve of my choice. Skyheart will be the new deputy of Skyclan!"
"Skyheart, Skyheart!" Skyheart looked bewildered at Cherrystar's choice, her blue eyes wide.
Another half moon went by with the daily routine of patching the burns of Amberpaw's clanmates. Until one night, the sound of screeching and thrumming of paws hitting the ground had every cat out of their nest, on edge. The ferns and bracken rustled until the three rogues that had battled with a border patrol moons ago burst through the undergrowth. They appeared in a blur, making leaves splatter in every direction.
"We're back!" The lead rogue sneered.

Fernwhisper blinked open her eyes to find herself in a meadow.
"Amberpaw?" A voice called behind her.
Fernwhisper whisked around to see a gray and white tom sitting there with his tail curled around his paws.
"I-I'm Fernwhisper," she stammered, "Amberpaw's my sister.
"Ah. I was expecting Amberpaw." He rumbled.
"Where am I?"
"Oh, excuse me. Welcome to Starclan's hunting grounds Fernwhisper."
"Does that mean I've died?"
"No, no. You've got a great destiny ahead of you." He mewed.
"Who are you?"
"I am Cloudstar."
"Oh, never heard of you before, If this is Starclan, then is Blazestar here?" Fernwhisper asked, glancing around.
"Yes. He's alright, don't worry."
Fernwhisper looked down and realised she could see the ground through her paws. "Wait! Did the fire have to do with my random vision I had that one day?"
"Yes Fernwhisper." He suddenly tensed, "Wake up, wake up! Something is happening!"
Right before Fernwhisper closed her eyes to end the dream, she caught a glimpse of the dark ginger pelt and amber eyes of Blazestar.
Fernwhisper woke up next to a rigid Reedthicket. "What's going on?"
"There's rogues in our camp!" He growled.
"What?" She shrieked, springing to her paws. She peered through the ferns and immediately recognized the three rogues that had attacked her when she was an apprentice. A growl rumbled deep in her throat. He clanmates stood in a weak, half circle formation, their neck fur bristling.
Fernwhisper stumbled up next you her sister right as the rogue leader yowled, "Attack!"
"Skyclan, attack!" Cherrystar screeched.
The clearing exploded into shrieks and yowling cats. Fernwhisper raced to a nearby tree and scrambled onto the lowest branch. She crouched, waiting until the lead rogue was directly underneath her. She pounced, landing squarely on his muscular back. She dug her claws in hard and bit down on the back of his neck. He screeched and leaped up, purposely falling onto his back, crushing Fernwhisper. With the wind knocked out of her, she let go, gasping for breath.
While she was recovering, the lead rogue whirled around and jumped on the back of the nearest cat, which happened to be Squirreltail. He grabbed her by the scruff and dragged her into the undergrowth. Fernwhisper leaped after them, "They've got Squirreltail!" But before she could go after them very far, another rogue leaped on top of her. His weight made her crumple to the ground. Exhausted, she flailed desperately, but was too weak to fight him off. He bit down hard on the side of her neck, everything swirled around her crushing her into darkness.

Fernwhisper woke up to the gentle rasping of Reedthicket's tongue over her head.
"Fernwhisper? Fernwhisper!" He yowled, "Get up, Get up! I won't lose you."
She opened her eyes to see him bent over her, his green eyes wide with worry.
"Thank goodness," He breathed.
Fernwhisper tried to lift her head but slumped back to the ground. Reedthicket grasped her scruff in his jaws and dragged her back to the sheltered space they were using as the makeshift medicine den. He let her go softly and let Amberpaw come over and treat her.
"Did we win?" Fernwhisper murmured.
"Yes, but Squirreltail, Curlypelt, and Hawkwing were captured." Reedthicket answered.
Fernwhisper gasped, "I tried to save Squirreltail, but I was basically sat on."
"There are search patrols looking for them, but I doubt they'll ever be found." Amberpaw mewed, somberly.
Amberpaw handed her two poppyseeds and a raspberry leaf. Fernwhisper lapped them up and drifted off with Reedthicket grooming her pelt.
