Chapter Twenty Three

L.A.'s POV

I decided that today would be a good day to go check out Madison's studio. After all it is the weekend, so that means no school or homework. I dial Khloe, feeling excited when she picked up, "Hey, bestie. Wanna go with me to check out this dance studio?!?"

"Oh." She is quiet, something very unusual for Khloe. "Well... I... well there's something I already had planned for today. Sorry, L.A." We talk for a few more minutes, but to be honest, I'm not really feeling it anymore.

I tell Susanna where I'm going, then walk down to the river, for a moment to think and maybe run into Ken, or even Do and Da. I don't want to admit it, even to myself, that my last option to invite James. I don't really know how to react to the fact that I have a crush on him... he's my first crush after all.

I spot a blonde haired figure sitting on the river bank. I immediately know that it's Ken, he turns and gives me a big grin. "Hey, L.A."

"Seriously, you have like super hearing." I laugh as I take a seat on the grass beside him. I notice that he is quiet, his only response to my joke being a small smile. "Ken. What's on your mind? Is it your Mom?" I feel panic rising up in my chest.

"No. It's not her." He starts crying, something I never would have suspected from him. "Something happened recently, L.A.. Actually a lot of things." I feel a little left out of the loop with my friends. I have hardly seen Ken recently. I guess no longer being homeless has a lot to do with that.

"And? Did something happen?" Something seems different about him, I can't pinpoint what exactly. But something has changed.

"I've changed." He says, practically reading my mind. Then adds, "I got saved."

"Saved?" Does he mean what I think he means?

"Yeah. Saved. I let Jesus into my heart the other day. I'm a Christian now!" Ken says wiping his eyes, a bigger smile than I have ever seen before on his face. "I had been talking to a friend a lot lately, they would bring up Jesus. At first I just wanted to change the subject, but then I started listening just a little. Finally I gave in the other day. I let Jesus have control. L.A. you won't believe what happened next, I ran straight to the hospital, you know to tell Mom. When I got there, a large group of doctors were gathered around her bed, mumbling to each other. When she saw me, she stood up and ran to me. 'Baby, boy. I'm healed.' She said." He had to stop to cry a little more, but these were good tears. "She told me and then the doctors kept gasping, that she was miraculously healed. Like the cancer had never been there at all. Jesus healed her, He gave a miracle!" He stood and shouted the last part.

I sat stock still. Suddenly inviting Ken to go to the dance studio felt so unimportant. A thought hit me full force, now everyone of my friends were Christians. A battle seemed to be going on inside of me, whether to find this comforting or a reason to run and hide. I talked for just a few minutes with Ken and made my way to the bridge. I got out my phone and decided to call and invite the one that I dreaded the most.

James' POV

I'm sitting on my bed in my room playing my guitar, when my cell phone starts ringing from the night stand. I check the caller ID, and suddenly my throat feels kinda dry. It's L.A.. I clear my throat a couple of times, then pick up. "Hey, L.A.. What's up?"

"You wanna go somewhere with me?" She blurts all at once.

"Where to?" I ask curious, though I'm willing to go just about anywhere with her.

"Dance Studio. Friend of Susanna's invited me. It's hers. Please don't make me go alone." Her words rush out in a matter of just a few breaths.

"Sure. Hey where are you, I'll pick you up." I say.

"You have a car?" She gasps from the other end of the line. Which is understandable I guess since I tend to walk everywhere, just cause I like it better.

I laugh. "Yes. So where are you? I'm in my car right now." I say grabbing my keys and getting in my car while we talked.

"The bridge." She says shortly, then hangs up.

Thank God, I knew what she meant. A few times she had mentioned a little know of bridge down by the river, it was more of a walking bridge than to drive a car across. But she had told me about it one day when I had gotten her to open up, she told where it was, and that it was one of her favorite places to go and think. To forget about everything, if she needed.

In a short time, I was at the small bridge. She was right, it was small. I'm not even sure if there would be room for two people to walk side by side. There she is. Her brown hair is splayed across her back and she has her head down so some of it is in her face. I make my way over to her and sit on the swinging bridge. "Your right it is nice."

"I know." L.A. responds. We are quiet for several minutes. "Thanks for coming."

"How could I not. You are one of my best friends here." I say, my voice not getting very loud.

"Friends." She seems to savor the word. Then I hear her whisper, "Yeah." Then she locks her eyes on me. Her eyes then drift to my cross necklace, stilling there. Emotions I can't quite read fill her eyes, and she looks out across the water.
