Chapter Twenty
Susanna's Pov
I can't explain it, but I hardly slept at all last night. My mind just wouldn't allow it. Which probably has something to do wih why I'm up at 5 am this morning, not that I had really been asleep before that. I showered and got dressed and made my way into the kitchen. My new pup, who I got yesterday, spots me and is hopping as he rushes after me. "Hi ya, Rascal. How's my little puppy." He responds with a quiet yip and licks my ankle. I grab a yogurt, some sliced apples, and grapes from the fridge for my breakfast and when I am finished I sit on the living room couch, pulling Rascal up in my lap. I pet him, as I think, I can tell he doesn't mind.
I let my mind wander back over yesterday, trying to see what has been weighing on me so heavily. I have a nagging feeling that there is just something that I am supposed to do. As it hits me, I struggle not to cry. "God, I don't know if I'm ready for that." I whisper upward. Rascal nudges me, and hops down off if the couch. He trots off, and when he returns he has something in his mouth. Its a photo from back when I had my car accident. Everyone is gathered around my hospital bed, they are all smiling, cause I just woke up. Joey has the weakest smile, mainly because I had lost all of my recent memories. Including everything that had happened between us.
Chills run all over me, and I let a few tears slip down my cheek, "You sure do work in mysterious ways, Lord." I murmur. I grab my purse and a satchel with things that I will need and momentarily debate about whether I should take Rascal or not. Then a thought hits me. I need a ride. I don't dare wake up Lynn, only partly because I don't want to bother her. I don't think I have the courage to tell anyone what I have to do.
A thought hits me, and I feel a bit dumb for a few seconds. I leave a note on the kitchen counter, that I will be back later, and leave the apartment, locking the door behind me. As soon as I'm downstairs in the lobby I get out my phone and call Uncle Jake's number. He answers after the second ring, and his big voice booms through the speaker. "Well, hi there Susie Girl. What do you need?"
Bless his heart, he's so kind to me. He adopted me like I'm his very own. "Uncle Jake. I need a ride. I can explain on the way, but there's something I have to do." As the words leave my mouth, I feel a little bit stronger, and I know that God's telling me I am doing the right thing.
In a matter of no time, Jake pulls up out front, in a old pickup truck. "Didn't figure I needed the bus, so I just brought my old truck." Jake seemed to understand without me saying anything at all, that I was nervous, so he talked a lot about his job and his old truck. A 50's model that he was the original owner of.
We finally get there, and I look at him. "Uncle Jake..... would you come with me? Please, and would you mind watching Rascal for me?"
"Anything for you, Susie Girl." He smiles, and I feel a bit more calm.
L.A.'s Pov
It's just a little after 6 when I wake up, Lynn is in the process of getting up and she smiles as we come out of our bedroom doors at the same time. "Good morning, L.A., it's a brand new day!"
"Mandisa, right?" I ask carefully, Lynn and Susanna have been showing me there music. I think they may have even snuck and put a few of their favorites on my phone. I don't mind much, really, the music isn't all that bad. Some of it, I really think I could dance too.
Lynn taps on Susanna's door, but there's no answer. Which is strange, because usually she's up before both of us. I make my way into the kitchen and spot a note. "She left a note, Lynn!" I call out, she comes rushing.
She grabs it and starts reading it aloud.
"Dear Lynn and L.A.,
There's something that I have to do. I'll be back later.
Love ya sisters!
Susanna"
Lynn turns over the paper, "Well that was awfully short."
"I'm sure everything's fine, Lynn. I mean, if it wasn't she would have told us right?" I say, trying to convince myself too.
"Maybe..." Lynn says, I can tell she's not sure either.
"Rascal's gone too." I say as I look at the dog bed. We all instantly connected with the pup yesterday, who was going to live up to his raccoon inspired name.
"That's odd." Lynn says, thinking carefully. She spots something on the couch, and her eyes grow wide. "I think I may have an idea." She pulls out her phone, and calls someone, it almost sounds like a Stamper on the other end of the line. But I can't be sure.
Besides I have a call of my own to make, I sneak back into my bedroom and dial Susanna's number. It rings and rings, and just when I am about to give up a man with a deep bass voice answers. There's lot of noise in the background and static. I panic and hang up. I don't care what anyone else says, I'm finding out where Susanna went.
