Chapter Eleven

L.A.'s POV

I sat straight up on my rusty old cot and my heart was hammering in my chest as sweat poured down my face. I had had the same nightmare that had been reoccurring so much ever since the accident over three years ago. The funeral. Then the government people grabbing me by the arms, forcing me to go with them no matter how hard I fought them. The pain that still felt like a fresh wound, even now. Then the orphanage where I just lay and sobbed.

None of that had really happened, but the dream was so vivid it always felt as real as air when I woke up. But this time the dream had ended differently. As I lay crying, I heard voices. They sounded like they were arguing with a third voice. Then arms looped around me in a tight hug. When I looked up, my eyes met two sets of blue eyes. Eyes that I'd not forgotten about since that wedding back in the summer.

And then as they led me to a car, in a loving way not hateful tugs, I spotted two more familiar faces. One was John from the Just Fall video, he smiled at me. "I told you God would work everything out for you kiddo. Just like He did for me."

And then behind him James had a guitar and was singing again. I couldn't understand the words but his eyes were telling me I could trust him.

Maybe things are changing. I looked out the nearby window, and whispered, "God if you really are out there, I pray that it is for the good."

Susanna's POV

It felt like yesterday had been a week worth if days instead of just one. We all stayed up late (minus the babies & Brycie who took the 3 girls home) planning and thinking. We all had great parts of a plan. But there was one hitch in the road we couldn't get across... what was our first move. We had no clue where she lived, and really the only clue was the possibility that Caleb had given us.

Finally when Chad kept yawning and murmuring, "I'm sweepy.", Oh and falling asleep on Joey we decided to call it a night. Fallon drove her sleeping husband home. Caleb and Kelsey left, and Alan headed out just after Joey and I left.

When we reached the apartment building Joey turned partly in his seat to face me. "Sus, we'll figure this out. I really feel like God is wanting us to do this, just like when you came." He smiled at me.

"G'night Joey. See you tomorrow?" I smiled and got out of the car.

"Night, Sus." Joey said, a silence hung in the air before he finally added. "Yeah, it'll be later in the day, I'm going to check out something in the morning."

"Sounds like a plan." I replied and we parted ways. I was finally able to get my hammering heart to calm enough to get a few hours of sleep.

I had managed to get some sleep, but most of it was dream filled and I couldn't get the situation at hand off of my mind. When I finished taking my shower this morning I tossed on some workout clothes. I stepped out of my room and took in the quietness of the apartment. It felt... Well... weird this was the first time in a while I had been living alone. Thankfully that would be changing soon, maybe I'll even have two roommates.

With that thought in mind and checking to see that the cupboards were bare, I decided I would go for a run, okay maybe a jog mostly. But hey it's still exercise.

The sun felt good out today, it wasn't too hot or too cold, just right for a morning run. I took off down the pavement, cutting through the park Joey and I liked to walk through, and finally found myself at Starbucks. My stomach growled loudly, reminding me I hadn't had anything but water since yesterday.

I went in and stared at the menu for several minutes. I may fix and drink Starbucks coffee at home, but this is a whole other ball park. Just as I'm about to turn tail and make a run for it, a familiar voice, stops me, "Hi Susanna."

"Caleb. You're up early." I say surprised. Yay, it's the King of Starbucks, I'm saved! Boy, I'm so glad no one hears my thoughts.

"A man needs his coffee." Caleb laughs with a shrug. "Have you ordered yet?"

"No. I'm totally lost. I've never even stepped foot in a Starbucks store before. My Starbucks comes from a bag and I put it in the coffee maker." I turn begging eyes on my friend.

Now it was Caleb's turn to be surprised. "Well, we'll have to change that." He placed his order and ordered the same for me. I gave him my money and he paid the cashier, thanking him. "Enjoy." Caleb said as he handed me the steaming cup.

"Yum." I say hugging the cup as I take a sip. "This is actually really good."

"You act like you're surprised." Caleb laughs. We talk a little while and then leave the shop. "Did you run here?" He asks.

"Yeah, actually I did. It felt good."

"More power to you." Caleb laughs again, but then something catches his eye, "There's that girl that I was telling you about. The dancer."

I look in the direction Caleb points with his head. I gasp. "That's her, Caleb. What do I do?"

"I don't know what to tell you, Sus." Caleb glances around. "I wish I knew."

I let out a sigh. "Here goes nothing. Will you go with me, Caleb?"

"Sure. She's coming this way anyways." He directs my attention to just a few mere feet away.

I whisper a quick prayer that God will give me the right words to speak and then I step forward. "Excuse me, are you L.A.?"

I know she recognizes me when I see her shoulders tense, and caution leap into her eyes. "Look I didn't steal anything. And I didn't bother anyone either."

"We didn't think you did. We got off on the wrong foot, I'm Susanna Stephens. I just wanted to apologize for making you run away a few months ago. I didn't mean to scare you." I said, my heart really going out to the girl.

"I wasn't scared. If you will excuse me, I need to head to school." The teen said, crossing her arms.

"It's okay to be afraid sometimes. The important thing is to not let the fear rule your life." Caleb speaks those wise words.

I nod and smile taking in the words myself, and I realize L.A. hasn't noticed Caleb before now. She seems to calm, letting her arms fall to her side, I'm not sure if it's what he said or just his presence but either way I'm grateful.

"Is there anything else you wanted to say?" She isn't as defensive now, just cautious.

The idea hits me and flows out of my mouth before I can even fully process the thought. "Caleb says he's seen you dance. Says you've really got talent. Have you ever heard of Anthem Lights.? Caleb is one of them. Joey, the guy you met at the wedding, is too. Their pretty cool guys. They need teen dancers for an upcoming video, you would be perfect for it."

L.A.'s eyes brighten at the mention of dancing. "Wow. That's an amazing opportunity. Are you sure?"

I grab a card out of my pocket and hand it to the teen. "Yes positive. Meet us at this address Saturday at noon."

L.A. takes the card, and gives the closest thing to a smile I've seen on her face. "I'll think about it."

She leaves and as she turns a corner headed for the school, I'm grinning and clapping my hands. Then I realize Caleb is glaring at me. "Susanna, what did you just do?"

My words flow back through my mind, actually sinking in this time. "Oh... I see what you mean. I guess you guys are making a dancing video." I offer a sheepish grin.

Caleb rubs his temples. "Let me call, Alan." He dials his phone, before Alan picks up he shots me another glance, "Don't think you're not going to help to."

"Of course." I grin. So maybe that didn't go exactly as I would have planned, but if it works that's all that's important. I pull out my phone and text Joey.
