Light In The Darkness
Nikki sat in the art room, her hands trembling as she stared at the shattered remnants of the mirror. The fragments glimmered faintly in the dim light, the once menacing object reduced to harmless shards. Yet, the memory of Mackenzie’s glowing eyes and the shadows that had almost consumed them refused to leave her mind.
The others were scattered across the room, trying to catch their breath. Brandon leaned against the wall beside her, his dark brown eyes filled with concern.
“You okay?” he asked softly.
Nikki nodded weakly, though the lump in her throat betrayed her unease. “I don’t know. I mean, we stopped her, but… what if this isn’t over? What if the shadows come back?”
Brandon crouched beside her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “They won’t. Not as long as we stick together. We’ve got your back, Nikki. Always.”
His words, combined with the warmth of his touch, sent a small spark of hope through her. Despite the danger they’d faced, there was something comforting about Brandon’s presence. He had been her rock through all of this, and now, in the aftermath, she felt that connection stronger than ever.
She glanced at him, her cheeks warming. “Thanks, Brandon. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
He smiled, a hint of shyness flickering in his eyes. “You don’t have to worry about that. I’m not going anywhere.”
For a moment, the chaos of the night melted away, leaving just the two of them in a fragile moment of peace. Nikki found herself leaning slightly closer, her heart racing for an entirely different reason now.
But before either of them could say anything, Zoey’s voice broke the silence.
“Guys, we should probably figure out what to do with Mackenzie.”
Nikki blinked, snapping out of the moment. She glanced over at Mackenzie, who was still unconscious on the floor. Without the mirror’s power, she looked almost… ordinary. The cruel confidence she usually wore like armor was gone, replaced by vulnerability.
“What if she wakes up and starts this all over again?” Theo asked, his tone sharp. “We should call the police.”
“And tell them what?” Chloe countered. “That she unleashed ancient evil from a haunted mirror? They’ll think we’re crazy.”
“She needs help,” Nikki said quietly, standing. “Something’s been controlling her, twisting her. I don’t think this is just Mackenzie being Mackenzie.”
“Are you saying we should forgive her?” Theo asked incredulously.
“No,” Nikki replied firmly. “But we can’t just abandon her, either. If there’s even a chance we can stop this for good, we have to try.”

With no better plan, the group decided to take Mackenzie to the nurse’s office, hoping to keep her contained until they could figure out their next move. Marcus and Theo carried her while the others kept watch for anything unusual.
The school was eerily quiet as they moved through the halls. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, and every sound seemed amplified in the stillness.
“Do you think the shadows are really gone?” Chloe whispered, clutching Zoey’s arm.
“I don’t know,” Zoey admitted, her voice shaky. “But I don’t think we’ve seen the last of them.”
As they rounded a corner, Brandon fell into step beside Nikki again. She glanced at him, her chest tightening.
“Brandon?” she said softly.
“Yeah?”
She hesitated, unsure how to put her thoughts into words. “I just… I wanted to say thank you. For everything. You didn’t have to come with me tonight, but you did. It means a lot.”
He looked at her, his expression serious. “Nikki, I’d follow you anywhere. You know that, right?”
Her breath caught, and for a moment, she felt like the world had stopped spinning. His words hung in the air, heavy with meaning.
“Really?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Of course,” he said, his cheeks reddening slightly. “You’re… you’re important to me. I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to you.”
Nikki felt her heart swell, a warmth spreading through her despite the chill of the night. She had always known Brandon cared about her, but hearing it so plainly made her feel like she could take on anything.
Before she could respond, Marcus’s voice cut through the moment.
“We’re here.”
They entered the nurse’s office, gently placing Mackenzie on one of the cots. Her breathing was steady, but she showed no signs of waking.
“What now?” Theo asked, rubbing the back of his neck.
“We wait,” Zoey said. “And we prepare. If Mackenzie wakes up and tries anything, we need to be ready.”
The group settled into the room, their exhaustion catching up to them. Chloe and Zoey sat together, whispering quietly, while Theo and Marcus took turns keeping watch by the door.
Nikki found herself sitting beside Brandon again, the silence between them filled with unspoken words.
“You should get some rest,” he said, his voice soft. “You’ve been through a lot tonight.”
“So have you,” she replied.
He smiled faintly. “Yeah, but you’re the one who smashed an evil mirror with a diary. That’s pretty badass.”
She laughed, the sound lightening the heavy atmosphere. “I guess I did, didn’t I?”
Brandon’s smile widened, and for a moment, Nikki felt like everything might be okay.
As she leaned her head against his shoulder, exhaustion finally overtook her. She drifted off, comforted by the steady rhythm of his breathing and the warmth of his presence.
---
Nikki’s dreams were strange and fragmented, filled with flashes of Mackenzie’s glowing eyes and the swirling shadows of the crypt. But amid the darkness, there was light—a soft, golden glow that seemed to guide her.
When she woke, the first thing she saw was Brandon, his hand resting gently on hers. His head was tilted back, his eyes closed as he dozed lightly.
She smiled, her heart swelling with gratitude. No matter how terrifying the night had been, she wasn’t facing it alone.
“Good morning, sleepyhead,” Chloe teased, her voice hushed.
Nikki turned to see her friend grinning, a knowing look in her eyes. “Looks like someone had a good night.”
Nikki blushed, glancing at Brandon. “It’s not like that,” she whispered.
“Sure,” Chloe said, her tone playful. “Whatever you say.”
Before Nikki could respond, Mackenzie stirred on the cot, drawing everyone’s attention.
Her eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, she looked confused, even scared. Then her gaze hardened, and the familiar sneer returned to her face.
“You,” she hissed, her voice hoarse. “What did you do?”
“We stopped you,” Nikki said firmly, stepping forward. “The mirror’s gone. Whatever power you had, it’s over.”
Mackenzie’s expression faltered for a split second, fear flashing in her eyes. But it was quickly replaced by anger.
“You think this is over?” she spat. “You have no idea what you’ve done.”
Before anyone could react, the lights flickered, and a low rumble shook the room. The shadows along the walls began to shift, coiling like living things.
“Mackenzie,” Brandon said, his voice steady, “what’s happening?”
She glared at them, her voice dripping with venom. “You broke the mirror, but the power it held isn’t gone. It’s loose now, and it’s coming for all of us.”
The group exchanged panicked glances as the room plunged into darkness once more.
