Chapter one

I just have one thing to say, I love the city! The tall buildings and streets full of people and cars all making noise. Oh how I love loud, noisy places! I grew up as an only child in a Christian family and all ever seemed to listen to was classical songs or hymns. I mean I believe everything my family does but I just wanted sound, all there ever was was quiet and I utterly despised every second of it. So to finally have moved to New York after 18 years of being stuck in  the quiet, I️ felt so free.

I had always dreamed of walking down the streets of New York, especially at night, looking in all the shop windows, hearing the people talk, and even feeling the cool breeze on my face. Growing up in Arizona means you get really used to the heat but I never quite liked it very much, it made me feel all sticky and gross. But the cold, that is something I like and even if you get too cold you just layer on to keep warm.

So, I've been in New York for two weeks and I can honestly say I have loved every second of it and the rude people who love to run into me on the sidewalks don't quite faze me anymore. As I walk down the street I drop two dollars into a can in a man's hand as he sits up against a building before I come to a crosswalk. I wait a few minutes just watching as cars pass before their light turns red and I can walk. I look forward focused on getting across that when I get to the middle all I hear is a loud honk.

I turn to see a car speeding straight for me not stopping but it was too close for me to move. I closed my eyes screaming and put my arms out in front of me in a very weak attempt to try and save myself but after a few seconds nothing happened. I slowly open my eyes to see the car right in front of me but it was stopped and the front was incredibly damaged with clouds of smoke billowing out. I stood their shocked and looked around at the other people just staring at me so I ran. I ran as fast as I could straight back to my apartment slamming the door shut and leaning against it.

"Again? What is happening to me? This never used to happen," I started rambling about the whole situation with extremely wide eyes that eventually dried out forcing me to blink. I start breathing quickly and having a panic attack but I quickly get a hold of myself and slump to the floor. I curl up into a ball and just sit there for what feels like hours staring at the wall until a loud knocking sounds at the door making me jump. I scramble to my feet and drag my hands down my face to try and rid it of the stress I am currently under.

I walk to the door looking through the peephole to see the front of two men's suits and my heartbeat rises. I slowly crack the door open to see a tall man with long, wavy, brown hair and dark brown but yet green eyes that drew your attention to the slight stubble on his chin. And next to him was a shorter man but still equally tall with shorter brown hair and beautiful green eyes that had a kind of dull look to them but there was still a childish spark visible. "Hello?"

"Hello," The short haired man says in a smooth voice and with the smirk visible on his face he appeared to be trying to flirt with me. I just stare at him trying to figure out exactly what he wanted before the taller man pushed himself in front of the shorter getting my full attention.

"Are you Gwyneth Jacobs?" He asked and I just nodded my head. "I am Officer Tristen and this is my partner Officer Carlson and we would like to talk about what occurred earlier today." How did he know it was me? "And if you were wondering we picked up a photo from the traffic camera's and posted it to see if anyone knew who you were and where you lived."

"Uh, I guess," I say hesitantly having a feeling they were lying but there was no proof that they weren't. "First can I️ see your badges." I️ say just as a precaution before letting them into my house. But they quickly get two badges out with their names and faces that appear real but it's not like I️ have anything to compare it with. I️ nod my head hesitantly and open my apartment door a little wider so they could come in.

We sit on the couch while I anxiously tap my foot not being very good with confrontation especially with the. authorities. "Okay Ms. Jacobs, can you tell us exactly what happened with the car today?" Officer Tristan says leaning forward slightly as to make sure he hears all of what I have to say.

"Um, well I'm not entirely sure," I️ delay telling them how often this has actually happened because I️ doubt they would even believe what I️ was saying. That is always the cops thoughts, that there is always a reasonable explanation for what is happening. "I️ had just been walking home from my job at the coffee shop a few blocks over when out of no where a car came speeding at me when the light was telling me to walk. It was too close so I️ just put my hands out to try and protect myself but nothing happened so I️ looked and saw that the car was demolished so I️ ran."

The officers look at each other before Officer Carlson asks, "Has this happened before? And if it has for how long has it been happening?" He looked genuinely interested and I️ could tell he wanted the truth so I️ sighed before answering.

"Ok, I️ doubt you will believe me but I've almost been killed like 30 times since I️ turned eight-teen 6 months ago. I've almost been ran over like three times, even trees have almost fallen over on me, I've fallen down stairs, and I've even almost been hit by a subway train after being pushed into the tracks. But every time I'm always okay in the end, like today, something always seems to stop it from hurting me just in time," I️ take a deep breath after my long explanation but it's not quite over yet. "Though the full force bad luck may have just started a few months ago but the protection has always been there. When I️ was little and very clumsy I️ fell down the stairs a few times but it was so weird, because I️ would remember falling but the next thing I️ knew I️ was at the bottom. I️ didn't remember the falling part and I️ was never injured. I️ know this makes me sound entirely insane but it's true."

I️ stop talking and look at the officers to observe whether they think I'm crazy or not but all I️ see is straight faces that I️ can't quite read. "And we both do believe you Ms, Jacobs but do you know if there was anything you did that could have brought on this bad luck?" Officer Carlson says sympathetically while placing his hand on top of mine while it sits in my lap. I️ laugh nervously and scoot back further on the couch so he can't reach my hands but that causes his hand to fall onto my thigh instead.

Before I️ could ask him to move it Officer Tristan nudged his partner to which he removed his hand. "I️ honestly don't believe I️ have I️ mean I️ grew up in a religious family so I️ avoid anything that could cause this," I️ say throwing my hands up in the air in exasperation.

"Have the lights ever flickered, or have you smelled sulfur while living here?" Officer Carlos asks and though it sounds strange I️ guess my explanation had been crazy as well.

"I️ mean they had on the first day that I️ had moved in, in fact I️ had to get them all replaced because they all exploded. But I️ was just told that they overheated because the previous owner must have left them on too long. But honestly nothing bad has ever happened inside my apartment that has been life threatening," I️ explain yawning in exhaustion after such a long day.

"I'm sorry for taking up your time Ms. Jacobs, we will be heading out now," Officer Tristan says standing up followed by his partner who winks at me. He takes out a card from his wallet and hands it to me. "Call us if anything else happens. Good night Ms. Jacobs."

Once they left I️ sighed deeply and changed into my pajamas before climbing into bed falling asleep.
