Josie Saltzman exited Liberty High School on the last day of her sophomore year with a smile on her face. She was finally halfway through high school. She felt a presence behind her and turned around to see Zach Dempsey. "Hey."

"Hi." Zach nodded. "Can we talk?"

"Of course." Josie spoke before following to a picnic table where the two sat down at. "What's up, Zach?"

Zach looked down at the table as he let out a sigh. "My dad is, like, really sick. We don't think he's going to make it."

"Shit, Zach." Josie let out a gasp, taking his hand, but he pulled it back. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know it was that bad."

"I just don't know if I can do this right now."

Josie nodded as he looked back up at her. "I understand that."

"But I don't want to break up forever. I really like you, Jo. I just can't be in a relationship with everything that is going on in my life." Josie watched as a tear slipped down Zach's cheek, and she stood up, moving to sit down next to the boy.

She wrapped her arms around Zach, pulling him against her. "Of course, Zach. You take you're time." She placed a kiss on his forehead. "I don't even know what I would do if I lost my dad."

Josie sat on her bed next to Jessica Davis. "So, it's been two fucking months, and he hasn't even texted you?"

"His dad died, Jess. It's okay."

"It's not okay. You're just supposed to be on a break."

The girl let out a sigh, turning on her phone. "He's going through a lot right now. I'm okay with him distancing himself if that's what he needs."

"But what do you need, Jo?"

"What?" Josie's eyes snapped up to Jessica's.

Jessica let out a chuckle. "What makes you happy?"

"I don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?"

"I mean I don't know."

Josie's phone buzzed, saying Justin Foley left a comment on her Instagram post, and a smile appeared across her lips. "You like Justin."

"What?" Josie furrowed her eyebrows, turning her phone over. "I like Zach."

Jessica shook her head. "You don't like Zach. You never have, and everyone except Zach knows that."

"Shut up."

"You're into Justin."

"Shut up."

"Just say you're into Justin, and I will."

"I'm not into Justin."

The girl rolled her eyes, scoffing. "Alright, whatever you say, Jo."
