Prologue
"You should not have sent so few. Terrible danger awaits them, and they may not make it through. Didn't you want your cure?"
Ivystar shook herself unhappily. She was sick of these daily visits from Jayflight, and he hadn't seemed all that pleased either, but he held himself confidently, looking down on her, a scornful gleam in his eyes. He looked upon her as if she were dirt, and wouldn't let her say otherwise. He constantly criticized her every move.
Jayflight especially hadn't let it go that she had sent Blackstorm, Swiftwind, Dawnhope and Lavenderpaw to the mountains on their own. Excluding Blackstorm, they were all incredibly young cats, and Blackstorm wasn't great at leadership despite being the only experienced cat there. Ivystar hadn't felt a twinge of worry, but Jayflight reminded her daily nevertheless.
"You know, you'd think it would be against the rules of StarClan to visit the living so often," Ivystar meowed huffily. "I personally disapprove."
"Who cares what you think?" Jayflight sneered scornfully. "Besides, who do you think sent me? Not StarClan, of course. Somewhere else. Where do you think I'm from? Of course StarClan!"
"Was under the impression you were from the Dark Forest," Ivystar muttered. Jayflight ignored her and continued pacing.
"You must call them back," he said. "They have no idea what dangers they will face."
"Well, they'll face them for the sake of the Clan," Ivystar snapped.
Jayflight stared at her. "Do you never learn?" he demanded coldly. "Why do you think the Sickness has ravaged your Clan uncontrolled? Perhaps poor planning on your part! If you'd sent someone to get the herb earlier, the dangers would not be what they are now, and the Sickness would never have lasted this long." He gave her a pitying look. "You brought this upon yourself, Ivymist."
Ivystar froze, eyes dilating. "You can't know. You never... why are you calling me by my warrior name? I'm not Ivymist anymore; I'm Ivystar."
"No, you're Ivymist. Don't think I don't know you killed Whisperheart at the Moonstone," Jayflight warned. "Whisperheart told me so herself. She would have made an excellent leader, and you killed her for what?"
Ivystar turned her back on him. "I didn't kill anyone. Now get lost."
