Harold was frozen at his place. "Harold what's wrong?" Joanne asked as she took a few steps towards Harold.
"Stop!" Harold said with his hand stretched out towards Joanne. Joanne freezes at her place. Her chest rose and fell as she stood there scared and terrified.
Harold glanced at Joanne turning his head in her direction. He took a few steps back away from Darcy's chair. Darcy was still on the chair, sitting like a frozen doll.
They had no plan and right now they needed one, one which can make Darcy follow their words. Harold looked towards Joanne, "call her to you" he mouthed. Joanne frowned, she didn't seem to understand it at first but suddenly her eyes brightened a little, she got what he was saying. She nodded and looked at Darcy.
"Darcy? Sweetheart Mummy needs to talk to you. Can you please come here?" Joanne said in a gentle tone.
At first Darcy didn't move and Joanne looked at Harold in defeat. Suddenly Darcy got up from her chair and started walking towards her mom. Meanwhile, Harold grabbed the chair and slowly brought it to where Darcy stood near her mother.
Joanne immediately hid the vile of holy water behind herself. She knelt down in front of Darcy to reach her height. Joanne heart ached seeing Darcy's pale face, and slight dark circles near her eyes, which showed no emotion at all. She kept staring at Darcy and her eyes brimmed with tears. She only wished everything to be a dream but even if it was a dream she wouldn't have wanted to she her child look so weak.
Joanne raised her free left hand and reached for Darcy's cheek. She gently stroked Darcy's cheek with her thumb as a drop of tear slipped out of her eye falling on the ground. And for a moment Joanne saw the softness in Darcy's eyes returned, the look that Darcy had whenever she saw her mother cry. But then suddenly it vanished and the emotionless look was back in her eyes.
Joanne heart ached more. She gulped a lump in her throat and looked up to see Harold standing beside them. Harold pointed towards the chair he had brought and Joanne's eyes followed his direction. She looked at the chair took a deep breath and then looked back at Darcy.
She wiped away her tears and smiled at Darcy. She reached for the chair and pulled it closer towards her and Darcy.
"C'mon sit on the chair" she said smiling at Darcy. Surprisingly Darcy followed her mother's words and sat on the chair.
"Good girl" Joanne praised Darcy and looked at Harold for further instructions.
Harold flipped a few page of the Holy Bible he was holding and started murmuring the verses. Joanne looked at Darcy for any reaction she would give for what was going on in the room. But her face was as blank as before. Joanne got a little worried. Maybe it wasn't what they were expecting. Maybe they were.
"Let me" Harold's voice broke Joanne's chain of thoughts. She looked up at him and shook the thoughts out of her head. She got up on her feet and backed off a little.
Harold took a few steps and was soon stood in front of Darcy. He looked at Joanne and asked her for the vile of holy water.
"Can you get me a glass of water?" Harold asked Joanne to which she nodded and left the room to bring him a glass of water.
Harold waited standing at the same place until Joanne was back.
She handed him the glass but he shook his head, "Keep it with you" he said leaving Joanne in confusion.
"Do you remember me?" Harold asked Darcy with a smile. She didn't reply. Harold sighed.
"Can you tell me what is your name?" He asked again calmly. Darcy just sat there not responding to anything.
"Alright" Harold nodded pursing his lips together in a thin line. Harold was suppose to go easy on Darcy since he knew the thing which was controlling Darcy was weak and immature, since it was not reacting to anything he did or asked.
He looked at Darcy and sighed and then he made a decision. He handed his Bible to Joanna and knelt down in front of Darcy.
"Do you wanna play a game?" He asked out of the blue with a warm smile. Darcy looked up and stared at him before giving a nod. Harold's smile grew wider.
"Okay then" he paused, "let's play umm... How about I be a doctor and you be my patient?" He said with a glint of happiness in his eyes. She nodded again.
Joanne looked at Harold, confused at what he was trying to do.
"Fine then I'll check you up" he said, "Open you mouth"
Darcy didn't respond this time. Harold was waiting but she was not responding again. "Come on" he added.
This time Darcy shook her head, a no. But Harold was not surprised as if he knew that was going to happen.
He looked a Joanne and asked her to hand him the glass of water and she just followed his words.
He got up on his feet and held the water in his hand and muttered a small prayer. Thanking the Lord at the end he looked back at Darcy.
"Ah! I've got the medicine for you" Harold tried to act, "And it's not bitter" he chuckled. "Drink this!" he urged Darcy but she refused it.
Harold kept trying but to no avail, she was not listening to him. He didn't knew if the method he was using would work but some of the similar cases that he had witnessed, a glass of water with prayers chanted on it worked. No matter how useless and illogical it may sound but he had seen it work and it was no less than a miracle.
Even Joanne tried to pursue Darcy to drink the water but it didn't work.
Joanne grabbed the glass from Harold's hand and knelt down in front of her. "Darcy, sweety please listen to mummy" she paused, "your mummy misses you sweetheart" her voice cracked a bit. "I love you Darcy and I don't wanna lose you." Joanna stopped as she tried to compose herself. It was no time for shedding tears and break down. She smiled, "It's just a glass of water" she said holding the glass in front of Darcy and slowly brought it closer to her face.
"C'mon drink it" she said with another smile and she succeeded.
Darcy drank it.
