Max Lightwood Bane was found at the doorsteps of the Shadowhunter Academy by Simon Lewis in 2010. He went to Magnus Bane for help. He and Alec decided to take care of the problem as they did not want a Clave investigation.

While taking care of Max, Alec grew attached to him. The Lightwoods visited Alec, believing that he'd raise the child. Isabelle and Maryse suggested the name 'Max' while Robert suggested 'Michael' after a good friend of his. After a while, Magnus and Alec adopted him.

As a baby, Max had trouble controlling his magic. He'd use anti-gravity spells that had to be undone by Magnus. Eventually, they let him play around as long as he didn't get hurt. Initially, Maryse, his adoptive grandmother, had trouble prying him off the Institute ceilings while she was babysitting him.

Two years later, he lived with his parents who adopted an orphan Shadowhunter and named him Rafael Lightwood Bane. They later went to the Londoner Institute to help the Blackthorns. Max and Rafe consoled Tavvy and Ty at Livia and Robert's funerals.

Soon, Magnus started to get sicker because of the illness affecting the warlocks. Max and Rafe were sent to the New York Institute with Isabelle and Simon where Max was checked for the illness and luckily, he was safe.

Later on, when their family along with the Blackthorns were at war, Tavvy, Dru, Rafe and Max were in Alicante with Maryse.

In October, Alec got elected as Consul. Alec conducted a special party as a proposal to Magnus that he accepted. They got married that night.

A few months later, at a cherry blossom festival Max attended with his family, he encountered Janus. Thinking that it was his uncle Jace, he hugged the man and ran off. He didn't notice the knife Janus had.
