Hodge Starkweather was born to a poor family in Idris. As a child he roamed around the fields and forests near Idris. Due to that he has an incredible knowledge about herbs and plants.

When he was younger he planned to join the Silent Brothers, but Valentine came along and convinced him into joining the circle. As a good friend of Valentine he helped writing the Circle's loyalty oath.

At some point he disagreed with Valentine's actions (for example experimening on Jace in his mother's womb) but he was too afraid to leave the community, so he stayed and even was part of the Uprising.

As a betrayed he was send into exile, being forced to live in the institute for the rest of his life.

Due to his incredible knowledge and wisdom he was the mentor of many young nephilim, including the Lightwood-siblings.

Having a strong connection to the Lightwoods, he still betrayed them by negotiating his own freedom when Valentine returned. After he gave Valentine the Mortal Cup he turned his back to the Lightwoods and the Clave and flew from the institute.

He is thin and has a beaky nose and a thick scar up the right side of his face.

In the books he has a raven called 'Hugin' and he often wears suits.

In the show he's more casual and more into the fighting-role than in the intellectual-teacher-role. He has the circle-rune on his neck that starts burning once he talks about the community.
