Edom is said to be the mirror dimension to the Earth, where history turned out in a different way. Edom is believed to be the dimension to which Lilith was banished and is ruled by her and the Greater Demon, Asmodeus and Lilith. According to some tomes found by Alec Lightwood, Edom had a capital, a demon city known as Idumea.

The place is said to be a wasteland, with streams turned into pitch, and soil into sulfur. Edom is said to be a burning ground forever. Though it is believed that no human can enter Edom, there is a pathway to that dimension, guarded by the Fair Folk.

Eventually, the asmodei, the demon children of Asmodeus, came into the world and threatened its peace. To counter them, the Nephilim or Shadowhunters were created by Angel Raziel, gifting Jonathan Shadowhunter with angelic blood and Idris.

The Nephilim of this world were different, however. There weren't the Silent Brothers, Iron Sisters, and, they weren't able to develop seraph blades, putting them at more of a disadvantage against the demons in their realm. The Nephilim refused the help of Downworlders, which caused the warlocks and faeries to align themselves with their parents—the demons. In their last days, they created a weapon called the skeptron to ward off the demons invading their world. The weapon was effective, but even still, the world was overrun by demons, the Shadowhunters eventually defeated and wiped out.

In the City of Heavenly Fire, Sebastian hid in Edom, where he was untraceable from the actual Earth dimension. He used the dimension's version of Alicante's Gard as his base of operations, with the intention of someday ruling the realm with his sister. Clary, Jace, Alec, Isabelle, and Simon traveled to the realm through a connected pathway in Faerie in search of Sebastian and his hostages: Luke, Jocelyn, Magnus, and Raphael.

In Sebastian's fortress inside the Dark Gard, he was confronted and killed, but not before he had sealed all of the passageways between Edom and their home dimension, essentially trapping her and her friends in Edom. When Magnus called on , his father, for help, he agreed to send them back to their world in exchange for Simon's immortality.

In the web series, Sebastian uses the Morning Star Sword to open a rift between Alicante and Edom, granting demons from the realm to enter Alicante. But Magnus goes to Edom and closes the rift, preventing any other demons from entering Alicante.

After Isabelle is infused with Heavenly Fire and goes to Edom without her friends' knowledge, Clary creates a rune that binds Downworlders and Shadowhunters and they enter the demon realm. When Magnus and Lorenzo fail to kill Lilith, Isabelle uses her Heavenly Fire to disintegrate Lilith, destroying Edom.
