Clary is a strong willed 18 year old girl, that gets forced into a new way of living, away from art and into mystery and fighting.

She goes through a lot, finding out that she is Valentines daughter and has special powers to create new runes, meanwhile trying to find and wake up her mum, who has been kidnapped by valentine to try and find the mortal cup, which can control demons and create new shadowhunters.

When she was younger, her mum Jocelyn hired a warlock called Magnus Bane to erase her memories, so that she doesn't remember anything about the shadow worldand the dangers it holds.

She meets new friends called Izzy and Alec Lightwood, and Jace Herondale, who she goes on missions and adventures with, trying to stop valentine and kill demons that get in the way.

She finds love with jace, and they go through a lot with trying to figure out his true identity, and weather they should be together.

She wakes her mum up, only to discover few weeks later that she is dead. Clary kills valentine, but in the process jace gets killed. She uses the wish from angel Raziel to bring him back.

They meet new enemies and defeat them, including Clarys real brother Johnathon, and Clary and Jace finally think they are happy when the angel Raziel sends a message to clary to say if she uses one of her runes that she will be stripped of her runes. As she used one to kill Johnathon, her and jace are split forever, besides a note, as clary loses her sight.
