Chapter 56 - Pathway
Megan took a deep breath as she stood in an open field with Warren, the kids, and the Wayminders. They were really doing this. It was almost over. They were almost home. The Wayminders closed their eyes and concentrated. In a few moments, a black portal opened, looking like a void in the peaceful landscape.
"Woah." Warren stared at the strange pathway that was supposed to take them home. He took a deep breath. "Here we go."
Megan nodded. "Yeah. Good luck."
"Wait, What?" Warren whirled to face her grabbing her shoulders. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Megan met his gaze. "I promised Cole I would go back for him if I found a way home. I have to stay."
"No." Warren tightened his grip on her. "I'm not leaving without you."
She placed her hands over his. "You have to. I won't risk your safety anymore. You have to go home."
He fought back tears. "What if I forget you again?"
She placed a hand on his cheek. "When I come through everything should go back to normal. It'll be like I never left." She took a deep breath. "Please go."
He nodded and pulled her into a tight hug.
Megan squeezed him, letting a few tears escape her eyes. "I promise. As soon as I get Cole I'll find you, all of you." She turned to Kendra and Seth.
The siblings rushed over and threw their arms around her. Even though they hadn't known her long, they trusted her. She was a good friend and a loyal companion.
"You'd better hurry." The woman they had stayed with last night interrupted. "We can't hold it open forever."
Megan nodded. "I'll be home before you know it. I promise."
Warren cupped her face in his hands and kissed her on the forehead. "I'll hold you to it."
They locked eyes, both fighting tears.
Kendra gasped, drawing their attention. A battalion of Enforcers appeared from the surrounding woods. There were too many of them and they were too close.
Megan looked at Warren. "Go."
"But..." he started, but paused when he saw the look in her eyes. She knew what she was risking; and she was ready to do it... to give them a chance.
Fighting his own instincts, he grabbed Kendra and Seth by the arm and pulled them towards the Pilgrim's Path.
"No!" Kendra fought him, pounding on the hand holding her arm.
Seth struggled in his grasp, but couldn't break free.
The trio soon disappeared through the portal.
Megan turned to face her opponents.
