Chapter 5 - Escape

Megan lay on her bed staring at the ceiling. She still had no idea what she was going to do. One thing was for sure: she couldn't give up.

Without warning, Dallen burst into her room, panting, his eyes wide. "Megan, we need your help!" His eyes were wildly scanning the room, never quite settling on her.

She sat up, swinging her legs out of bed. "What happened?"

Dallen tried unsuccessfully to compose himself. "One of the demons broke free of his domain. He's running wild through the preserve."

"What!?" Megan leapt out of bed and started grabbing her gear. "How?"

Dallen dashed to the window. "Someone gave him the artifact the holds all of his power. "When he was first detained here, his power was stolen from him and trapped in a medallion." He talked a little faster than normal. "Someone went to his domain and gave it to him, making him strong enough to defy his borders. Now, he is strong enough to overthrow the treaty."

Megan strapped on her quiver, grabbed her bow and followed Dallen down the hall. "Do you have any idea who it was?"

"No." Dallen moved quicker than one would expect, but that might have been from the adrenaline. "Everyone is accounted for. Everyone has an alibi."

"Well, someone has to be lying. They can't all be innocent. The boundaries of the preserve are too strong for someone to have broken in."

"I agree, which is why we need your help and your alibi."

Megan could see why he would suspect her. She was new here. No one really knew her. "Of course."

On the main level, the staff was gathered in what Megan assumed was the living room, although it looked more like a medieval library. Ramon stood before a line of almost fifty people, all dressed in work clothes or pajamas. No one wore shoes and many had dark rings under their eyes. Megan felt a little suspicious walking in with all her gear. Several people in the line eyed her incredulously.

Ramon turned to greet her. "Good. You're here. Now we can hear your side of the story." He stared her right in the eye. "Where were you earlier tonight?"

Megan coolly returned his gaze. "In my room, trying to sleep."

"Do you know what has happened tonight?"

"Yes, Dallen told me one of your demons got out. I don't know which one."

"Why are you dressed?"

"I always sleep in my clothes when I'm traveling. It's more convenient in an emergency."

"And your gear?"

"I put it on as soon as Dallen told me."

Ramon looked at Dallen, who nodded. "What do you know about the escaped demon?"

"Only what Dallen told me: its power was trapped inside a medallion and now someone has given it back to him."

Ramon inspected her closely with narrow eyes. Finally he nodded. "Alright."

Turning to address the staff as well, he raised his voice so that it echoed off the stone floor. "We have a traitor among us. Someone has sided with demons. I have no doubt in my mind that this is the handiwork of the Society of the Evening Star." He paused as a gasp swept through the crowd. "The organization that we thought was long gone has resurfaced and is reeking havoc at many preserves around the world. And now, they have come to us. They have infiltrated our ranks and we must root out the traitor, but right now we have a demon to stop. We must work together to defeat this threat or we shall fall. This fight may even reveal our turn-coat." Ramon dismissed the staff to prepare for battle. As they dispersed, he turned back to Megan. "I have worked closely with every person on this staff for years. I would trust any one of them with my life. You are the only one I don't know," Megan prepared herself for whatever accusation would come next, but he just said. "but I trust you. Let's show this demon who's in charge."
