Chapter 49 - Echoes

Seth pulled Kendra along through the fog. She tried not to think about all the dead souls wandering around them.

Seth skidded to a stop as he almost ran into a broken pillar. "Woah, that came out of no where."

Kendra pulled her hand free of his grip. "That's why you don't run in the fog." She scanned the area, but, with the mist, there wasn't much to see. Something caught her eye and she did a double take. "No way."

"What?" Seth followed her gaze. His eyes widened. "That's not possible."

Kendra moved forward. "Patton?"

An Echo turned. He had blonde hair and a mustache. His clothes were from another age.
"Kendra? Seth?" Patton made his way over.

Kendra gave him a hug. Last time she had seen him he had been an old man, but now he looked like he had when he had helped them with the shadow plague. "You look great." Kendra pulled away. "What are you doing here?"

Patton shrugged. "I guess this is the after life. The real question is, what are you two doing here? You're not..."

"No." Kendra cut him off. "We're alive."

"We followed one of Warren's old friends here through a weird portal thing." Seth motioned to symbolize the portal.

Patton sighed. "That's what I was afraid of." He rubbed his forehead. "Do you know what happens when you come here?"

Kendra narrowed her eyes. "What do you mean? We know we're stuck here, but Megan's helping us find a way back."

Patton took a deep breath. "It's far worse than that." He met each of their gazes. "When you come here, everyone at home forgets you."

"What?!" Seth and Kendra asked in sink.

Patton nodded slowly. "Everyone you care about, everyone you love loses all memory of you."

"No..." Kendra breathed. "Oh please no." She covered her mouth with her hand and stumbled back against a boulder.

"Is there anyway to get their memories back?" Seth stared at Patton, the fear showing in his eyes.

"I don't know." Patton placed a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry."

Seth moved to his sister's side. "We'll figure something out. We always do."

Kendra nodded, blinking back the tears that had sprung to her eyes.

A silhouette rushed out of the fog. It was Megan. She looked panicked. She skidded to a stop, panting. "They took Warren."
