Chapter 40 - Homecoming
Megan halted the group when Sky Port came into view, nestled on the Brink.
The others gawked at the sight.
"Okay." Megan turned to face them. "Before we go down there, there are a couple things you need to understand. First of all, this is not a place to mess around." She eyed Warren and Seth. "You see that cliff?"
They all nodded.
"That's called the Brink. It has no bottom." She explained. "So don't fall off."
Seth's eyes widened. "I didn't think that was possible. A bottomless pit."
She rolled her eyes. "Not exactly, but you get the idea.
"Second, these people are what you might call pirates."
"What?!" Seth was having trouble holding back his excitement.
"Yes, they're pirates, which means I will be doing all the talking." She glared at Seth. "Understood?"
He nodded fervently, but Megan knew he would get into trouble. He was a young Warren.
She sighed. "Finally, the... leader here used to own me."
Warren and Seth looked confused.
Kendra's eyes widened in horror. "You were a slave?"
Megan nodded. "Slavery hasn't been abolished here. In fact, it's thriving. Here, it's considered a legitimate occupation."
"But..." Kendra was at a loss for words.
"I know," Megan sympathized, "some of the stuff here takes a bit of getting used to, but I'm not going to let you be stuck here long enough to have to learn to live with it."
"Why are you helping us?" Warren thought out loud.
Megan took a deep breath, holding back tears. "Because it's the right thing to do. And... even if you don't remember our relationship, I do. I remember all the times you were there for me, all the times you saved my life. Now I get a chance to pay you back." Before he could say anything else, she turned and walked towards Sky Port.

"Halt!" A loud voice sounded from the guard tower by the gates. "Who goes there?"
Megan rolled her eyes and looked up at the scrawny man leaning over the wall of the tower. "Greg, I thought you were banned from guard duty."
The man blanched and almost fell from his post. " Megan?" He ducked out of sight and the gate swung inwards. He stood expectantly on the other side, messing with his disheveled red hair. He met Megan's gaze and blushed, flashing an awkward smile.
Megan chuckled. "It's nice to see you too Greg."
"I didn't think you'd be coming back." He stuttered.
"Why wouldn't I?" Megan walked passed the fumbling red head. "This place is like a second home."
Their group walked through the small town, Megan moving purposefully in the front. They reached a central building and Megan walked right in and through the maze of hallways to a large room, furnished with tables and benches.
A man sat on a raised dais in a throne-like chair. When he noticed Megan enter, his face lit up, but there was also a hint of concern.
"Megan!" He stood and stepped down from his raised platform. "What brings you back here?"
Megan approached the man with a smile. "Hey, Jones." She paused before him and looked back at her companions. "I need your help."
