Pain. That was the only sensation. A pain so strong that it blocked out anything else. It pulsed through her. It engulfed her. It was her.
She couldn't move, couldn't think, couldn't breathe. The darkness crashed around her, colliding like waves against the light. The two forces warred against one another, trying to rid themselves of the other. Each attack sent a surge of agony rushing through her. She couldn't escape. She was trapped in the crossfire of this eternal war - a war that neither side could win.

Subtly, she could feel her heart beat, weak, but getting stronger.

Next she sensed lungs, rising and falling in a steady rhythm.

She became aware her body, the grass prickling her skin. She was alive.

With all her strength, she fought to reach the surface, to get out of the mess of her mind. The world grew ever closer.

Megan gasped for breath, coughing and spluttering as she sat up. She was in the grass, in the same clearing as before.

Soldiers lay unconscious or lifeless around her.
What had she done? What had she become?
She curled into a ball, hugging her knees close to her chest. She couldn't hold back the flood of tears that had sprung into her eyes. She didn't want to move. She just wanted to lay down and die, to end this misery, to protect the world from the monster inside her. She was ready to give in, ready to let her power tear her apart, but... she couldn't.

Something inside wouldn't let her. Not yet. She had to know that Warren and Dale were okay. Even if they didn't remember her, even if it made her feel worse to see their clueless faces, she had to be sure. She couldn't abandon her family, not without saying goodbye, without trying to explain.

Megan pushed herself to her feet. She had to find a way home. She had to go to Creon.

Yep, it's a shorter one, but no less important, obviously. 😁 I hope you enjoyed it. Sorry for the internal rant at the beginning. I have a bit of an obsession with my characters' psychological state. (Usually their problems😅)
