Chapter 34 - Escape

Megan quietly shut the door to the Skycraft hangar. Safe. She darted over to one of the massive flying ships and leapt into one of the lifeboats.

As she was unlatching the boat from the ship, the door to the hangar opened and a soldier stepped inside. He immediately spotted her and called over his shoulder to the other soldiers in the hallway.

Megan grabbed a knife and slashed the ropes holding the vessel. She dropped a few feet before settling into the air. Grabbing the rudder, she shot out of the hangar and out into the cloudy sky beyond.

Behind her, soldiers flooded onto one of the Skycraft and the Vulture slowly drifted out of the hangar.

"Crap!" Megan flew as fast as she could towards The Brink.

The Skycraft was quickly gaining and she noticed soldiers moving to cut her off on land.
Barreling forward, she flew as far out over the Brink as the lifeboat would allow before it dropped from the sky. Megan jumped from the vessel, landing on thin air. She took her last four steps and plummeted to the ground, summersaulting to a stop behind the soldiers.
They whirled around to find her bolting across the grass towards the forest.

Megan stopped, leaning on her knees as she caught her breath. She could hear the soldiers following her, but she didn't have the energy to keep running. She ducked behind a tree as a group of armored men sprinted into view.

The men searched the trees, looking for signs of where she had gone. They crept ever closer to her.

Megan's heart skipped a beat. She had no idea what these men could do. The Shaping in Sambria could be deadly. Her left eye flickered and her right eye slowly darkened. "No." Megan muttered, trying to stop herself from losing control. Shadows seeped from the pores of her right arm and light shone from her left.

One of the soldiers rushed around the tree, only to be thrown back by a bolt of shadow. He slammed through a tree, snapping the trunk and collapsing it onto one of the other soldiers.

Megan walked out from behind the tree, her hair flowing gently around her head.

The soldiers backed away a few steps.

"What?" Megan's voice was echoey and hollow. "Afraid of the dark?" She clenched her right hand and shadows surrounded her and the soldiers, her left hand casting the only light in the pitch blackness.

The world went cold, but the soldiers forced themselves to fight. They converged on their target, but Megan waved a hand and bolts of light collided with the soldiers chests and flung them across the landscape.

Megan approached one of the crippled unconscious men. His armor was dented and blood streaked through his hair and down his face.

Megan gasped. Her eyes faded back to normal and the darkness retreated. Her hair dropped limply down her back and she collapsed to the ground unconscious.

Hey! It's been a little while, but I finally got the chapter done!
Sorry to make you all wait. I was stupid and started 4 stories at the same time. 😅 I'm trying to stay consistent, but I apologize for the gaps in uploading.
Hope you enjoyed.
