Chapter 29 - Treasures
Jace violently shook Megan's limp body. "Megan. Megan!"
She was unconscious and wouldn't wake up.
His chest and leg hurt, but he kept at it until, finally, she shifted in his arms and her eyes fluttered open.
It took a moment for her eyes to focus on anything in particular. Eventually, her gaze settled on his face. "Jace?" She tried to sit up, but didn't have the strength. "What happened?"
Jace blew out a long breath. "I have no idea." He described what he'd seen.
Megan just looked at him in disbelief. "I... I don't understand."
"YOU don't understand!" Jace helped her sit up on the ground next to him. "I've never seen anything like that in my life."
Megan pulled her hair back into a ponytail.
Suddenly, the Fairy Queen's words came back to her. Darkness and light were not meant to dwell within the same host, not in this capacity. If you lose control, you will die.
Megan sighed. "I... I think I know what happened," she met Jace's gaze, "but you're not going to believe me."

Jace just sat there in shock with his mouth hanging open.
"Well," Megan urged, "say something."
He cleared his throat as if snapping out of a trance. "I'm not sure what to say."
There was a rumble from deep within the castle. "We'd better move." Megan tried to stand, but wobbled and almost fell.
Jace stood, favoring his right leg. He offered her a hand.
She took it and they helped each other hobble down the hallway. They stumbled into a room piled with treasure and weapons. Whoever or whatever had made this castle put a lot of confidence in their guardian. The pair collapsed onto a pile of coins, exhausted.
From deeper in the castle, they could hear other battles raging. Finally, everything went quiet and a while after that a group of Sky Raiders found them resting on the treasure.
One of the men carried Jace away to a lifeboat to be taken back to Skyport.
Megan refused their help, feeling much better. She wandered the room and examined some of the strange weapons and foreign coins scattered throughout the room. Picking up a pair of short boots, she looked them over. She stooped down and laced them up. They reach just past her ankles and were made of a tough weathered leather. She walked around a bit.
The boots were deceptively comfortable.
As she strolled the room, Megan glanced up at the towering ceiling. She examined the intricately carved designs scrolling up the pillars. Suddenly, she realized that she couldn't feel the ground beneath her feet anymore. Looking down, she found that she was walking on air. The last three or four steps had carried her into the air like an invisible staircase.
Tentatively, she took another step.
The air acted like solid ground.
Megan let out a slow breath and took another step. Her foot fell like you would expect and she tumbled towards the ground.
One of the other Sky Raiders, who had seen her falling, darted over and caught her before she hit the ground.
Megan's gaze eventually settled in her rescuer's face. The woman had her black hair cropped in a pixie cut and her thin eyes were a soft brown. She looked slightly Asian and her nose appeared to have been broken once before.
"Are you alright?" The woman's voice was gruff.
"Yeah." Megan slid out of the woman's arms. "Thanks."
The woman nodded to Megan's boots. "That's quite a unique find. Can't say I've seen anything like it," She elbowed Megan in the side, "and I've been here a long time."
Megan stared at her boots for a moment then met the woman's hard gaze. "Well, thanks again."
"No problem." The woman assured. "Sky Raiders stick together."
