Chapter 25 - Survival

Megan almost fell as the castle shook. She drew her sword. Small stones rained down from the walls around her.

Suddenly, a massive creature burst through the gapping archway. Its wolffish head shook loose stones from its thick fur as the rest of its long body slithered out of the castle. Dark grey fur coated the whole beast and a massive pair of bat wings extended from its back. The heavy tail swung forward and curled around it's huge back paw. It's ears were flat to its head as it scanned the courtyard growling. Its piercing yellow eyes finally settled on Megan and its pupils narrowed to slits. It let out a deafening roar and charged her.

Megan used size to her advantage and slid under the creature's gargantuan leg as it swatted at her. She rolled onto her knees and slid across the paved ground.

The beast swung its head growling. Drawing her attention with half-hearted attacks, it brought its tail around from behind at full force.

Megan noticed the tail too late and it smacked hard. She tumbled across the cobbled floor, losing her grip on her sword.

Coughing and gasping for breath, she rose to her knees, favoring her right arm. Cuts were scattered across her body, stinging terribly.

The beast turned, seemingly smiling as it examined its prey. It bared its teeth and a strange clicking sound reverberated from its throat, almost like a laugh.

Megan forced herself to stand. Blood ran down the side of her face from the gash in her forehead, mixing with her sweat. Her arms tingled as if they had fallen asleep. Her chest hurt when she breathed. She had no weapon.

The creature moved as if to taunt her, flexing its muscular wings and body menacingly.
As it showed off, Megan saw her opportunity. She darted forward, sprinting at full speed towards the castle.

The beast seemed to fold in on itself as it hastily turned to pursue her. She knew she wouldn't make it to the arch.

The creature's tail slapped her from the side, hurling her halfway across the courtyard.
She spluttered and coughed up blood as she rose. She noticed a hole in the wall that was just big enough for her to slip through, but far to small for this dragon thing. She lunged forward, leaping through the gap.

The wolf-dragon tried to follow, smashing through the wall. It opened its gaping mouth to finish Megan off, but the damaged wall collapsed in on itself, crushing the beast's neck under its weight. A sickening crack echoed through the stone courtyard as the beast fell into a lifeless heap on the ground. The jaws snapped shut inches from Megan's face and she took a step back before her legs buckled and she dropped to the ground in disbelief, panting. She'd done it.  She'd made through her first mission.

Grabbing the horn strapped to her belt, she mustered as much breath as she could and blew. A strong clear note carried over the clouds to the lifeboats waiting half a mile away.
Her job was finished.

Sorry about the wait. I couldn't figure out what sort of creature I wanted her to fight. Well, I hope you enjoyed it.
