Chalter 51 - Encouragement
"What?! Who?" Kendra asked, her eyes widening.
Megan took a moment to catch her breath. "The Enforcers, the people who were following us."
"How do you know?" Seth wondered.
She met his gaze. "Their leader told me." She locked eyes with Kendra. "He said that Warren's lifespark is trapped in the Echolands and if I don't hand myself over... Warren will die." She fought back tears as she relayed the message.
"Well," Seth started. "We can't just hand you over. They don't get to win, not that easily."
"What do you propose we do?" Kendra challenged, crossing her arms.
"We hand her over." He said simply.
"But you just said..." Kendra began.
He cut her off. "We hand her over, and while their distracted, I'll Shade walk and save Warren."
Megan thought for a moment. "That could work."
Kendra whirled. "But you said his lifespark was separated from his body."
Megan nodded. "But we can make them give it back before you hand me over."
"And what if they won't?" Kendra protested.
"Then get Warren, and leave the rest to me." Megan assured. "Come on. We should get some rest."

Megan sat at the edge of their camp, unable to shut down her brain. She couldn't stop thinking about Warren. They had to get to him in time or she would never forgive herself. All of this was her fault.
"Mind if I sit with you?" A strong, kind voice sounded behind her.
She turned to see Patton Burgess, or his echo anyway, standing behind her. "Um... sure."
"Thanks." He lowered himself down next to her. They sat in silence for a while. "It's not your fault you know." Patton finally broke the silence. "They made a choice to come here. They knew it would be dangerous."
"But they're only here because they were trying to save me. If I hadn't..."
"Hindsight is always 20/20." He cut in. "You can't change the past. Trust me, I've tried. All you can do is move on and do your best to live with it, to fix it."
Megan scoffed at her own thoughts. "You know, the only reason I'm here, is because I was trying to save him. And now, I'm about to lose him again."
"No you're not." He encouraged. "This plan will work."
She met his gaze. "I know, that's why."
He gave her a confused look.
She took a deep breath. "I helped a preserve fend off a demon, but the dark power from his talisman went into me. When I confronted him, he made me a Shadow Charmer, but that wasn't enough to stop the damage that had already been done to my body. In desperation, I went to the Fairy Queen. She made me Fairy Kind." Megan stared off into the darkness of the night. "She saved me, but the light and the dark were never supposed to mix. Now they're in the same host." She took a deep breath. "And they're constantly trying to get away from each other."
Patton sat quietly for a moment. "I can't even imagine what that's like. I've never heard of something like this before. What happens?"
She hugged her knees loosely. "If I don't keep the power in check. It lashes out. And if I don't stop it in time, it'll tear me apart."
"You're afraid of it." He observed.
"Of course I'm afraid of it."
"Why?" He asked. "You've been gifted with more power than most mortals could ever dream of possessing. You can't get rid of it. All you can do is try to control it. From what I hear about you, that shouldn't be a problem."
Megan faced him. "Thank you, Patton. Though I'm not so sure you're right."
He smirked. "Of course I'm right. You're a Burgess."
She gave him a surprised look. "How did you..."
"You're my flesh and blood." He nudged her arm. "You think I can't recognize that?"
