Chapter 10
I was bored and taking a break, so I thought I'd finish this chapter. It's badly unedited, guys. Hope you don't mind :)
"...and you drink a little too much and try a little too hard. And you go home to a cold bed and think, 'That was fine'. And your life is a long line of fine."- Gillian Flynn
Jenna stood and watched Kyle and Yvonne from a distance, every little detail from when they kissed, the way he put his hand at her waist, the way he held and squeezed her hand and the way she took his hand and tightened her grip on it.
Yvonne and Kyle were falling for each other right in front of her eyes. She couldn't deny her feelings for Kyle, yet she couldn't bear to see her friend unhappy. She knew that if Yvonne knew about Jenna's feelings for Kyle, she would ignore her own feelings for him.
And Jenna was going to do just that. She was going to ignore her feelings for Kyle. But she was going to need a distraction.
She saw Percy standing in a corner, sipping a non alcoholic drink while he kept a watchful eye over the hall, while Dana stood talking to a handsome young guy. They all had something to do at this party.
A waiter passed by her and she grabbed a glass of wine. She had found her distraction.
***
Dana was talking to a nice young man, when she spotted Marcus pulling Yvonne away from Kyle. A tinge of jealousy went through her, but she shook her head.
"-and then I told him that I will not shoot the next scene without a break," said the man in front of her, bringing her out of her thoughts.
"Haha," she laughed weakly at the words she had heard only half of, hoping it was an appropriate response. The man was going on and on about his movies. Frankly, she was a bit tired of this one sided conversation, but she didn't want to be rude to him.
"Mr, er-" she began, trying to remember his name.
"Sam, just call me Sam. Mr Didier is my father's name," he replied, happily.
"Er, Sam. I am feeling a little queasy, maybe it's the wine. I think I'll go and sit down now. Please, go ahead and enjoy the party." She gave him a quick smile and walked off before he could respond.
She sat down next to Kyle, who looked defeated. He held a glass of wine in his hand, not yet drunk, but definitely a little tipsy.
"Seems like she's into blondes. Why is an intelligent woman like Yvonne into stupid blondes?" Someone was speaking behind her in a low voice, obviously looking at Kyle's slumped form.
"Yeah, well if you noticed, she hasn't been with him since she got here. Seems a little fishy to me." Said someone else. "Look at the sad f*ck sitting next to her hot ginger friend."
"How do guys like him get all the girls? Nice guys like us just get to sit and watch." The first guy said. "Bet he's banging both of them at the same time." They snickered.
"Hey!" Dana called out angrily.
The men looked very embarrassed to have been overheard and quickly walked away. Dana looked at Kyle, who looked sad and weary.
She had never been in his shoes, but she could imagine how left out he was feeling at the ball. One thing he needed right now was some cheering up.
"Hey, Kyle!" she said, putting her hand on his shoulder, "wanna make Yvy jealous?"
Kyle looked at her dejectedly and glanced towards the open door of the balcony, where Yvonne had disappeared with the guy.
She pulled him up and started walking towards the group of people playing instrumental music. Kyle followed her without a question.
"Hello, could you please play something we can dance to?" Dana asked the band. The members nodded quietly and began to play an upbeat, cheery tune.
Dana took Kyle's hand and put it on her waist and took his other hand in her hand. Kyle looked at her confusedly, but finally gave in.
He grinned as he twirled her on the floor, mouthing the words to the popular song whose music they were dancing to. Before they knew it, they were both enjoying themselves.
***
"Not here, Marcus," gasped Yvonne, looking back to make sure no one had followed them.
"But I have to Yvonne," groaned Marcus. "He's put a price on my head! The only one who can save me is you."
He looked at her with pleading eyes. It somewhat pained Yvonne to see such a strong young man in such vulnerability in front of her.
"Marcus, even though he's my business partner, I am not going to snoop in his business."
"Even if his business involves a cold blooded murder of someone you know?" he cried, incredulously.
Yvonne rolled her eyes. Joe was a dangerous man, but she knew he had simply threatened Marcus. There was nothing more to it. Besides, he wasn't going to get anything out of killing Marcus and Joe didn't like wasting his time on useless things.
"Marcus, for the last time. He was just threatening you. There's nothing more to it. Stay out of his way and you'll be fine."
She turned to walk away when she found that a couple of hands had clung to her ankle. She looked down to see Marcus on the ground, looking up at her with tears in his eyes.
"Please, Yvonne," he said.
Yvonne's heart melted. "Very well, then, Marc. You'll have to do something in return."
Marcus got to his feet, relief flooding his eyes.
"Anything!" he cried.
Yvonne took hold of his shoulder and gently pulled him back to the hall. She put a hand on his shoulder and pointed towards the dance floor, where Dana was dancing with Kyle.
"Take Dana out on a date," she said with mirth in her eyes.
***
Gordon had been observing the hall quietly since the ball had started. He wasn't a very social person, but keeping an eye on everyone was crucial, especially since there were some very dangerous people here.
He had a flask of alcohol in his jacket pocket, but he couldn't afford to be even a little buzzed right now. His quick eyes noticed everything, Marcus pulling Yvonne towards the balcony, Dana and Kyle dancing, and especially Jenna's odd behavior. She normally avoided alcohol, but right now, she was drinking a little too much.
He noticed Yvonne making her way towards him. He gave her a nod as she took a couple of snacks from a table and came towards him.
"Gordon," she said, taking a bite, "Marcus wants protection from Joe. I tried to tell him that there's nothing to worry about, but for some reason, he's convinced that he's going to get killed."
Gordon thought about it for a while. Joe's behavior had been odd tonight. Usually he liked to make his presence known among people, but tonight, he was keeping it low key. What was more, was that he wasn't teasing Marcus about the threats, something he enjoyed doing. There was definitely something wrong.
"I think Marcus may be on to something," said Gordon, sipping his drink quietly.
***
Kyle stood awkwardly stood awkwardly at the dance floor, looking at Dana dancing with Marcus. First this guy had stolen Yvonne from him, and now Dana.
Dejectedly, he made his way to the snacks table. As he was picking a few things to put on his plate, he heard words which made his ears perk up.
"-They were killed by a wild animal, they say. I don't believe it one bit!" said a guy with brown hair.
"I bet it was some sort of drug deal gone wrong. I heard they can be quite brutal."
Kyle made his way to them, wondering if they were talking about who he thought they were talking about. He had been suspicious about their deaths and now he had a chance to find out the truth.
"Excuse me, but are you talking about Greg, I mean, the three deaths at the camping site?" he asked, cautiously.
"Yes," said one of them, glancing at the other guy nervously. "Did you know them?"
Kyle debated whether or not to tell them or not. He finally decided it was okay. What could possibly go wrong?
"Yeah," he said, lowering his voice. "They were my roommates."
"Your roommates?" asked a new voice from behind him. It was Joseph Rodriguez. Kyle's throat went dry at the realization. Yvonne had told him to stay away from him.
"Y-yes," Kyle stuttered, his eyes shot to Joe's face. Joe smiled calmly at him, while his eyes held a sinister sort of power to them.
"That's quite unfortunate, Mr Crawford." Joe walked away quietly.

The ball was coming to an end and the guests were all leaving one by one. Percy could sense Yvonne's relief at everything having gone fine.
Just then, he saw Jenna stumbling towards the door, absolutely sloshed.
"Goddammit, Jenna. What's with you today?" hissed Yvonne, running to hold her before she fell down.
"Gordon, could you help me out?" she said, swinging Jenna's arm over her shoulder. "Please take Jenna to the car and drop her home? Take Harold. I'll wrap up with Dana."
Percy nodded, placing his strong hand on Jenna's waist and pulling her against him. He turned around to leave.
"And Gordon?" called Yvonne, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Thanks for the help with everything." She smiled genuinely at him and gave him a side hug. Percy found his own lips bending upwards slightly.
He picked Jenna in his arms. It was because it would be easier, he told himself. He carried her to the parking lot, where Harold the chauffeur was standing next to his car.
He gently placed her on the backseat. He found himself bending to remove her heels. It was to prevent the sharp edge from spoiling his car, he told himself. He pushed her gently onto the side, so that she lay prone on the entire backseat. As he was about to close the door, he felt a hand on his wrist.
"Stay with me," whispered Jenna.
Percy froze, not knowing what to do. He deliberated for a few seconds.
"Harold, please take us to Jenna's place." he said, taking a seat next to Jenna.
She leaned on him and his arm decided to place itself around her. It was because she was his friend, he told himself. She nuzzled her face into his shoulder. Friend, he told his arm as it decided to explore the curve of her waist.
"Kyle," she whispered. Percy froze, keeping his hands to himself till they reached her place. A strange sort of pain rushed through his chest. She's just my friend, he told himself. It shouldn't matter if she liked Kyle.
As the car stopped, he picked her up again, carrying her shoes along with her. The receptionist looked at him weirdly as he passed him by.
He tried to ignore the way she nuzzled her nose against his neck as he stood in the lift carrying them to her apartment. The soft ding of elevator that told them they had reached their floor provided him relief. He almost lost control of himself.
He pressed the doorbell to the large white door. A few seconds later Mike's nanny, Stella came to the door. She was a stout woman with grey hair and a cheerful smile.
"Hello, Percy," she said, opening the door. Percy nodded and stepped inside. Before he walked towards her room, he gave a questioning look at Stella.
"Mikey's asleep," said Stella, smiling. She made her way to her room. "Make sure you lock the door before you leave."
Percy carried Jenna to her room, the last one in the small hall, right next to Mikey's. He quickly looked at the slightly ajar room where he could see the soft orange glow of Mikey's nightlight.
He opened Jenna's room and placed her on the bed, unfolding a blanket and putting it on her. It was because she was his friend, he told himself. As he was about to leave, he felt a hand on his wrist again.
"Please, stay." she said, loosening her grip over his wrist.
"I'm not Kyle," he said, getting up to leave.
"I know. You're Percy," came her groggy voice. "Please stay, Percy."
He hesitated. "I can't," he said. His heart was tugging him towards her. Stay with her, it told him. She's my friend, he told it.
"Please," said Jenna, "come here."
Percy complied, kneeling to level himself to her face on the bed. She placed her hand on his face, sweeping it over his forehead, his cheeks, his chin, her fingers finally settling on his lips. She pulled herself to a sitting position.
"Kiss me," she said, looking into his eyes. "Percy."
Perry's heart took over and he lost control of his mind as she pressed her lips to his. As her hands hands played in his short hair, he ignored the voices that told him she was his friend. The feeling of her chest pushed to his own made him ignore the repercussions. He pulled her against his skin, deepening the kiss, her dress sliding off her shoulders. The warm, sweet taste of her lips made him completely lose himself as his hands explored her bare skin.
His lips moved from her lips to her chin, slowly among their way towards her neck. Her fingers gripped at his shirt as she moaned, while he tasted the sweet skin of her neck.
"Kyle," she moaned.
Everything came crashing back to Percy. She wanted Kyle, not him. He gave one last kiss on her lips and got up, leaving Jenna dazed in her bed.
***
As the last of the guests were leaving, Yvonne and Kyle stood near the door, saying their goodnights and thank yous, while Dana helped manage the leftovers, which were to be given to the homeless.
Yvonne was beyond pleased that the inauguration had gone smoothly and she had only her friends to thank for it.
She noticed that the last person to leave the hall was Joe Rodriguez. A strange sort of dread ran through her as he walked up to her.
"I had a wonderful time at the party. Many congratulations to you on the inauguration of the JC tower," he said, smiling. "I also hear a few rumours pertaining to a certain group of people found in a camping site."
He surprised Yvonne by taking her by the waist and pulling her towards him. She felt his warm breath on her ear as he whispered, "Dan Jones was my nephew."
He placed a soft kiss on her cheek and left.
