Chapter 100 - She was becoming a two-faced bitch
A/N: This chapter is quite dry, but we need to lay some foundation to solve the big problem!
XG 100 - She was becoming a two-faced bitch
The backup team successfully finished the controller without big injuries. The enemies seemed to be toppled down so easily, if Wong Xue Guo had not seen the dead bodies struggling to move.
As soon as they saw that, they hurriedly dissolved all the bodies before the controller could use them again.
The entire west building of the hospital was completely empty of zombies, courtesy of big guy Frankenstein's diet. Thus, they easily grabbed everything and anything as long as they had enough storage space.
Beom Seok carried Changbin's dead body on his back and Wong Xue Guo’s thought was rather morbid as she fearfully imagined that the dead body might suddenly move and bite down onto Beom Seok's neck.
Thus, she earned a worried look from Chen Yibo when she constantly glanced at Beom Seok's back.
They had also secured a dead body for their researcher, including the big guy. As for the controller, Charles Wong firmly insisted on destroying their body and Jackson's suggestion to take the twins back was rejected.
When they were moving things into their cars, they spotted some figures staring at them behind the window at another side of the hospital building.
"Are they zombies?" Wong Xue Guo squinted her eyes. The sudden change from darkness to brightness stings her eyes.
"They are likely survivors," Chen Yibo guessed, as they were not banging on the window like enthusiastic zombies upon seeing fresh meat.
"Ignore them and continue moving!" Kang Xunsu yelled at the kids when they stopped moving their hands.
Their ride back to their base was a more relaxing one. She distracted herself from the aches, stings, and pain throbbing all over her body by looking out of the window. Sleepiness does want to pay a visit, but she blocked it from entering as her mind refused to stop thinking about what happened in the hospital.
Perhaps they had killed a lot of zombies lately, as they could see more survivors coming out to ransack things. Some even rebuilt the place and cleaned it up to be more habitable.
The survivor's eyes were guarded as they watched the cars driving away and made no move to stop them. They were able to survive not only because they were lucky and strong, but also smart enough to know that those people with cars and guns should not be messed with. There were some that bravely asked if they could follow them back to their base, but all of them were rejected.
Their refusal had most of them stay away, but some stubbornly followed behind their cars to follow them back to their base. In the end, they were still driven away from the laboratory. Knowing their refusal would create trouble if a large group of survivors started knocking the door, Musihada Laboratory allowed them to stay with the other survivors living in the tent on their land.
At least they were protected by the electric fence, even if they had to be exposed to nature.
The drastically reduced amount of zombies had actually helped Musihada Laboratory. They had long sensed dissatisfaction from the survivors living on their land as winter became even harsher and would likely cause a riot if the outside's situation had not become better.
After all, there were many people who originally thought that Musihada Laboratory was the one that started the rabies outbreak. Thanks to Ta Kei, they released the video of the woman in the hospital running away after being bitten by an experimented patient to the survivors living outside their laboratory.
Wong Xue Guo had no idea what the angry survivors would do to those people claiming to be one of that hospital's employees, but they would have an unwelcoming experience.
Most of the survivors had already packed up and returned back to the town, while some stayed behind. It was still uncertain if anything bad would happen and so, the latter group chose to stay and wait first.
With a bunch of new information about gene experimentation gotten from the raid, the researchers spent countless nights burning midnight oil going through them. Even Chen Yibo was roped in to help out and was unable to accompany Wong Xue Guo out to hunt. Occasionally, Vihaan would join their group to train his ability.
Those times were always where Kim Sung-Ho would smile more often.
Without Chen Yibo by her side, Wong Xue Guo had mixed feelings about it, unsure whether to be happy or sad. There were some moments where she hoped Chen Yibo would quickly find a girlfriend so that her heart would give up. But right after thinking that, her heart would be in discomfort, not liking his attention to be focused on someone else other than her.
Wong Xue Guo started to think she was becoming a two-faced bitch thanks to Chen Yibo!
With her parents busy and Chen Yibo not around, Wong Xue Guo was struck with loneliness. There was even the feeling of being abandoned whenever she was alone in the small family suite.
After 109 days of the apocalypse, the researchers held a large meeting. Everyone in the base was excited, as there was news that their research had a breakthrough.
Jackson was picked to explain their findings to the entire people inside the large conference room. It was a hard task to do so without a mic to save electricity, so everyone had to remain dead silent so that his voice could reach everyone.
"Theoretically speaking, people with the gene have some immunity to the infectious disease, as it is from the same family. However, for the ability to be developed, one had to check the body's capability and how strong the ability is, leading to each person requiring a different dosage of genes. The gene needs a lot of nutrients to develop, hence the weight loss. Those bitten became zombies because they do not have enough nutrients for their genes to activate properly, leading to their bodies subconsciously seeking to solve the matter. The only way is to eat and human flesh has plenty of nutrients. We are currently lacking the ingredients needed to test it out on an infected person, but we could try one and see if it could cure them."
The time travelers knew it was not a feasible solution, but the people in present would not believe their words without proof. After all, the Wong couple being ‘time travelers’ was a secret only to a trusted few.
"The second possible way to cure the infected person is to deactivate the gene. We have found an acceptable theory and we need to test it."
The first batch of zombies had most of their flesh rotten away, revealing a lot of their white pristine bones and organs underneath it. No one has the confidence that these meatless zombies would survive after their genes are deactivated. If they regain human consciousness even after that, it would be really horrifying to the survivors themselves.
The search for the cure would mostly be the recently bitten people, along with the zombies that mostly still have their flesh. It was easy, as they just need to grab a zombie, so they do not need to discuss it further.
"We have decoded the information from the experiments in the hospital. Experiment 65, a death row prisoner from the Peony country, was secretly shipped to Crocus. He was alive throughout the entire experiment and often kept unconscious to control him. He has the gene and the experiment succeeds in awakening his gene. Thanks to the detailed records, we found a way to awaken the gene, but in a more acceptable method than theirs. But the drawback is, it will be very painful, we can't use aesthetics and they will need a lot of nutrients to avoid being a zombie."
"I will have my team research a way to increase our nutrient pill dosage," Director Choi volunteered.
There will also be a team in charge of securing a few types of zombies to test if the deactivating gene will work. Both teams were equally important and not allowed to reduce their resources for each other’s team.
That being said, even if they intend to create a decent nutrient pill to help people survive the gene awakening, they decide to have a batch of people undergo testing first.
Charles Wong and Suzie Yap were among the volunteers. As their daughter, Wong Xue Guo could only worry for them as she does not have the right to defy their decision.
Kang Xunsu and L.L thought it was risky so they chose not to participate in it, much less to test if they even had the gene, to begin with. Kim Sung-Ho and Ash do not have the gene so the news hardly affected them.
Mr. Chen also does not have the gene, not that he minded it as he preferred to hole himself in the lab. He would certainly be more useful there than on the battlefield.
Wong Xue Guo had no thoughts of volunteering at first, that was until Chen Yibo told her, "I will be volunteering myself as well."
"Why?" Wong Xue Guo blurted out in shock.
No one had tested the process yet, even if her parents had confidence that it would work. She was not willing to take the risk, so why would the careful Chen Yibo take the risk?!
