The school was huge and I stared at it. There had to be at least three floors and there were like five or six separate buildings. Obviously at least two of them are the boys and girls doorms. The other buildings though I'm not quite sure about. The one that a ton of kids are going to this early in the morning had to be the dining hall.
"Symphony, don't forget your bag !" Dad called from the 2003 Chevy Malibu, pulling me out of my thoughts. Surprised he spoke I spun around and sighed. Oh he was just telling me to grab my bag so he doesn't have to wait.
"Oh right," I mumbled and opened the back door of the car pulling out my duffel bag. It may have been a little over packed ,but I had to, due to the school's one bag policy. For most people it would have been heavy, but I'm stronger than most people. People also always underestimate how strong I really am. I'm a nice person, but you get on my bad side you get your ass kicked.
Setting my duffel bag down on the concrete I turned to the dark blue Malibu to say bye to my dad, but he was already driving off. Really, what a wonderful father?
"Love yah too dick, oops I mean Dad, " I muttered. Yeah dad has earned my distrust and my burning hate. He's not the father everyone thinks he is. That's fine if he leaves. I can start over at this school. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to never have to see him again.
After glaring after his car I turned back towards the school and I felt my face heat up. This guy, about the same age as me, was watching me curiously. Crap, I feel so embarrassed now, he must have heard and saw all of that. Still, I had to know how much he actually did see.
"Um, Hello, I'm Symphony. How much of that did you hear exactly?" I asked praying for a miracle. No such luck.
"Hello, I'm Luke. To answer your question, I heard all of it. Kinda saw your car pull in." He said and shrugged. I sighed and nodded.
'Great not the first impression I wanted to make,' I thought and picked up my bag.
"Please pretend that you didn't," I mumbled and he shrugged saying that he'd try to. Somehow I know he won't. I mean it's hard to forget something that you have already seen. When you want to forget something you can't forget but when you want to remember something you forget it easily.
As I walked through the gate I felt like my life was changing, but also beginning over. I honestly didn't want to come here in the first place, but Dad had insisted so now here I am. Now that I'm here, though, It might not be so bad. I mean the buildings look old, but new in a way. There are a lot of kids here that I can become friends with and maybe, just maybe, I will meet someone that cares about me.
Luke offered to help me get to the school's Principal, they call her the Head Mistress here. I agreed and followed him through winding paths and to one of the buildings. I was so going to get lost here. As he opened the door for me he whispered in my ear, "Whatever you do, don't piss off the Head Mistress." At that Luke left. Not sure why he'd say that I made my way down the poorly lit hallway and found the door labeled Head Master. There must have been a guy here before the Head Mistress.
Building up my courage I knocked on the office door nervously and a woman's voice shouted, "Just a few minutes!" I sat down on a chair next to the door and waited. A guy stepped out of the office and my breath caught in my throat. He looked just like Luke, but that's impossible Luke just left the opposite direction. The guy smiled at me.
"Hello, I'm Logan," He mumbled. Logan? That is weird. Maybe...
"You're twins?" I asked, that would make a lot more sense. He laughed.
"Ahh so you've met one of my brothers. Which one, Luke or Lennox? We're actually triplets," He answered. Triplets? Oh gawd this was going to be confusing. How do you tell them apart?!
"Cool. Oh and I met Luke," I mumbled and replied to his question as an after thought.
Logan laughed and finally stepped out of the office doorway. What was so funny about that? Did I say something wrong or funny? Did my Virginian accent slip in again? I was royally confused as I watched him head down the hallway.
The Head Mistress called me in and my worries about the triplets ceased as my worries about being at a new school took hold again. Standing, I straightened my back, held my head high, and walked into the Head Mistress's office. Though on the inside I felt so nervous and a little scared as Luke's warning replayed in my head. 'What ever you do don't piss off the Head Mistress.' I offered my hand politely introducing myself. Once that was out of the way I sat in the seat across from her.
The Head Mistress asked me a bunch of questions. Some of the questions seemed odd to me. She said she'd give me a few days to get settled in before she'll dump classes on me. Yay, I can't wait for classes, NOT. Sighing I thanked her and stood. She smiled and welcomed me to Shadow Hills. I nodded and went to the door. She stopped me once more as I reached for the door handle.
"Where did you get that beautiful bracelet?" she asked and I shrugged. I'm not really sure I've had it all my life and I haven't ever taken it off for long periods of time. I feel weird without it.
I told her I couldn't really remember, but it had to have been from either my Mom or Dad. She studied me a moment then waved me on. 'That was weird,' I thought as I opened the door, 'Why did she care?' All she had to do was say it was a nice bracelet.
My roommate was waiting for me right outside of the Office, which was a little odd. Her name was Jersey and she's apparently a Junior here. It really sucks being a Sophomore at a new school. I had never even heard of this place until Dad's new girlfriend suggested I go here. She is only 10 years older than me and it's kinda creepy.
Unlike my roommate, who I actually already like, I didn't like my Dad's girlfriend. Something about her just feels off. I don't know what exactly it is I don't like about her, I just don't. She is a kind woman and has never been cruel to me, not like Dad has.
As we entered the dorms all the girls stopped talking with each other and stared at me. Yay, here we go again the "Oh look, a new kid lets all make her feel even more weird and stare at her". Yeah fun, not. I should be used to this though. Dad and I have moved a lot and each time I had a new school and a new home. New awkward stares and new peple. You eventually learn to ignore it after a while, but it's still uncomfortable.
Jersey led me to our room and told the others to quit staring at me. I loved her right now. Giggling she opened the door and stepped inside. As I stepped in behind her I looked around. The rooms aren't small, but aren't real big either. Two beds, two dressers, two bathrooms, a small fridge, and a chest at the end of each bed providing us with more storage. Posters lined Jersey's side of the room. Most of One Direction, but a few others were there too. I personally don't care for One Direction all that much. I definitely hate Justin Beiber. Augh. Jersey and I at least agree on that.
"Go ahead and unpack your things and we can head over to the dining hall for lunch and orientation." I almost forgot about orientation. Gees I've been so fixated on other things that I forgot that they are having an orientation, after lunch, for the new kids. I don't really understand why Orientation was required though. I mean can't they just assign Seniors to show us around? I highly doubt that there are that many new students this far into the year.
"What is orientation really about?" I asked suddenly, surprising Jersey. She studied me. She was clearly thinking hard about what she was going to tell me, adding fuel to my suspicions.
"What do you mean?" she asked nervously. Now I knew for a fact that there is something different here. How do I get her to tell me?
"I just mean there is something more to this school than what I thought, isn't there?" I insinuated. She looked away from me and sighed.
"Yes, but that's all I'm allowed to say," she mumbled and sat on her bed. I can tell she wanted to tell me everything, but looked conflicted. Does she think I can't handle it? Or is she just scared to get in trouble?
"Come on Jersey. Tell me, I can handle it." She shot me a glare and I sighed. For now I'll drop it, but I'll ask her again later. I started to unpack.
When it was time to leave I had been reading "Rise" from the Nightshade Novels and marked my page. I followed Jersey to the cafeteria and as we waited I desided to ask her again about my suspicion. What is orientation really about? Why do I get the feeling something about this school makes it different than others? Why do I feel a difference in the air here? I have to know.
