Shade was a small baby, and he had a birth defect in his magic that ended up making one of his lungs very weak, which would cause him to cough up blood at random times. That wasn't the worst thing he was born with, though.

There were actually three things he wished were different about himself: his fur, his eyes, and his magic.

In the society of nekos, werewolves, and many more creatures, there were lots of rumors about fur color that made it really hard to live if you didn't have the right genetics. 

Unfortunately for Shade, he had coal-black hair, ruby eyes, and shadow magic, which was a form of the dark magic that people once used for evil in the Great War. He was seen as a demon.

His mother, Hannah, had light grey fur and red eyes, and his father had black fur and green eyes. Shade had gotten a terrible mix of genes.

Our story begins when he is five years old.
