Warning: If you plan on watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, or The Legend of Korra, and you haven't done so yet, I highly suggest not reading this chapter.

Alright so, since watching season two of The Legend of Korra, this topic has been bothering me: the Avatar's connection to their past lives.

If you've seen LoK, you know that Korra loses her connection to the past Avatars, and she never regains that connection. Now, in my mind, this is a hole in the story. It shouldn't be that way. Now let me explain my reasoning.

So, in the show, she loses the connection to her past lives because she lost Raava, and Raava was destroyed. And I suppose this would make sense, that she would lose the connection because of this, but after thinking harder about it and similar situations in The Last Airbender, I feel like it doesn't.

May I call your attention to a quote from TLA - Avatar Roku informs Aang that, "If you are killed in the Avatar state, the Avatar will cease to exist." My guess is that, this would happen because Raava would be killed, therefore ending the cycle. Makes sense, doesn't it?

Okay okay, bear with me here. In The Last Airbender, in the last episode of Book Two, Aang is killed in the Avatar state. Even after being brought back to life, wouldn't this mean that Raava had been killed, and then brought back? Just like what had happened in The Legend of Korra?

Now you may argue, "But we never saw Aang contact one of his past lives after that?" and that would be correct, but now I'm going to reference the graphic novels (which I'd say are canon, being written by the actual show creators). In those, Aang is still capable of contacting the past Avatars.

And this is where I find the hole.

If Aang is still able to speak with his past reincarnations, even after Raava was killed and brought back, shouldn't this be the same for Korra?
