↳ Interview #11: Spiker648

Award Winner: spiker648

"Pantheon" -- won second place in the Paranormal category of SGA in May 2022.

Interviewer: evanluvbot

1) Could you introduce yourself? Tell me how long you've been on WP, and what made you interested to be a WP writer/start writing here?

Spiker648: My name is Kyle, 27, he/him pronouns. I've only been on Wattpad for a little bit, maybe 2 or 3 years now. I've been writing for around 12-13 years now, but I only just started posting my work recently. I chose wattpad because I heard there are opportunities to get published here. Here's hoping!

2) You participated in the the Savant Awards in May 2022 and the book you entered "Pantheon", won 2nd place. How did you feel about it when you heard the announcement? Was this your first time entering a contest? If so, were you nervous?

Spiker648: Honestly I was pretty shocked. I've been posting my writing for a while, but this was one of the first contests I entered besides the Watties. I thought, at the very least, I'd get some feedback that I could use to improve my craft. When I got the message that I had won second, I thought there was some sort of mistake. But after the initial shock passed, I was pretty happy and excited

3) What are some other awards or contests you took part in? What are your views about participating in these events generally? Did you enjoy them?

Spiker648: I honestly can't remember all of them, but there were probably 5 or 6 I entered in the span of a week. I've only ever entered the watties before, so community run contests were completely new for me. Since entering, 4 of them have cancelled the contest for various reasons, and the rest I'm still waiting to hear from. But it's always exciting to me to enter and just have the opportunity.

4) Was there any particular reason for participating in TSG? xD

Spiker648: This might sound bad, but its only because it showed up in my recommended feed. I was on a binge of entering contests and there it was lol.

5) How was your experience in when writing "Pantheon"? Was it an easy process? Which parts did you struggle with the most?

Spiker648: Pantheon was actually relatively easy. I came up with the idea a while ago, but I was in the middle of writing another story and wanted to finish that. When I did, I sat down and pretty much did the whole story outline in the course of a weekend. It all just came naturally - probably because I'm a huge history/mythology nerd. The hardest part was probably researching specific myths/events, since there tend to be a lot of conflicting sources. But I went with the most widely-accepted versions where I could, and where I couldn't, I tried to frame the legend in the story the best I could. I love history and myths so it was actually a lot of fun to adapt them like that.

6) How do you feel about your current book?

Spiker648: Pantheon is my baby. It's the only story I currently have that's based off of real life myths, and I love it for that. Not to mention, as I said before, it came so quick and natural to me that it feels like it was meant to be. It's easily my favorite story that I've written so far.

7) Would you call yourself a Pantser, Plotter or a Plantser? (If you're not clear what they mean basically a Pantser is a writer who wings it, while a Plotter plots out the details, and a Plantser is both)

Spiker648: I'd say I'm a Plantser. I always have a story outline, but I don't plan out every single detail of a story if I can avoid it. I like having some wiggle room to course correct as new ideas pop into my head. What I normally do is plan out a whole scene, then write it, and go back to planning once I have a better idea of where I am at the end of that scene. It gives me a sort of structures chaos method, but it works foe me.

8) What was one thing you enjoyed the most while participating in TSG? Or one thing you disliked?

Spiker648: I like that it let me see my story in a new way. When writing and planning Pantheon, I always saw it as fantasy/urban fantasy. But that category was full, so I looked to see where some of my other stories would fit. Based on the description though, Pantheon fit pretty well into the Paranormal category. It was interesting to recontextualize everything after the fact like that.

9) What do you think would help WP writers, other than hosting awards? Do you think you would be receptive to the notion that a community book that contains writing advice? Would you read something like that? >.<

Spiker648: I actually have several books like that saved to my library on wattpad, but I never find the time to go through them. But a friend of mine said something a long time ago that really stuck with me, and I think it would be a great idea for wattpad to implement. Basically a "random undiscovered story" button. You put in a genre, maybe a few tags, and it will find you a story to read with under a certain amount of reads. Obviously there will be a lot of crap to sort through, but it will help the diamonds in the rough shine and find an audience. And honestly, those lesser-known authors are sometimes better than fully published ones, so I think it would help a lot of people.

10) Are you comfortable with us posting the interview responses and questions?

Spiker648: Yeah go for it!

FA3H4VEN: What inspires you to write?

Spiker648: Initially it was to cheer up when I was down. Some people play games to get away from it all, but for me it's always been creating characters, worlds, and stories. But at this point it's just a part of who I am. If I got too long without writing, my mind fills up with ideas until it's all I can think about. Plus, I just like sharing my ideas with people, and hopefully it can help cheer someone up the same way it helps me. Initially it was to cheer up when I was down. evanluvbot: It's good that it inspires you! Did you expect to win in this contest?

Spiker648: Not at all. I entered probably 5 or 6 contests within the span of a week, and before long I had forgotten about most of them. But this one specifically I didn't have the highest hopes for because the story I entered didn't fit into the "paranormal" category in my mind. I've always seen it as an Urban Fantasy story, but after reading the requirements for the category, I figured I'd give it a shot. And now here we are

evanluvbot: Good thing you did! :D Do you think you winning will affect your writing, if so how?

Spiker648: I don't think that winning will affect it too much, but the feedback I got from my judge definitely will. There were a few notes in there that I hadn't considered before, and a couple that line up with some worries I had about that story. So going forward I can edit that story to improve it, and then apply those lessons to future stories I make.

evanluvbot: Now lastly, will you write books similar to the one that won or explore more ground?

Spiker648: Actually funny enough, I just finished the sequel to that book maybe a month ago. It was originally meant to be a standalone, but one of my test readers brought up a really good point about a loose thread I left at the end, and now it's going to be a trilogy. But beyond that, Urban Fantasy is the genre that most of my story ideas belong to, so I'll definitely be working in that same vein in the near future.

evanluvbot: Ah that's great! Thanks for letting me interview you,I do apologize for postponing the interview!

Spiker648:  No problem at all, I've been jumping the date around a good bit too. Thanks!
