Divorce Time

We've been wading in the riptides reflecting on the oceans blue facade. Watching the wind pick up the sea and throw it back into the water. Until it curls over in pain and despondency. You can find our love at sea; voids in the depthless gravity.

Keith eyed Kaya, his eyes furrowing with suspicion as he realized the truth.

He pointed an accusing finger at his wife, "You're fighting with Corey! ," he sighed satisfied, "ha nothing gets past me" he laughed.

Kaya let go of the breath she was holding.

Corey rolled his eyes. "Damn detective you know everything! God forbid one of us kept a secret from you" he said sarcastically.

Keith smiled proudly turning to Ben for the first time, "Excuse me Sir, we don't need towels" he said waving a dismissive hand.

Keith turned back around to the officer, "are we done now? please my wife and I are on vacation" he stressed as he wrapped one arm around Kaya's waist.

Ben blinked for a minute staring at Kaya as everything sank in. He quickly turned away and headed back towards the dining hall of the ship.

The officer nodded skeptically, "I'll have a few conversations with my superiors, and we will be investigating this matter more clearly. However, since the victim is not available I will let you guys enjoy the night" he grunted as he put away his notes.

Keith kissed his wife, "Now, what are you and Corey arguing about?" he asked.

Corey quickly spoke up, "Nothing, I was just being confrontational. I had a few too many drinks" he shrugged shyly.

Keith also had a few drinks and overall was feeling light and breezy with merriment, "great mystery solved" he burped.

Kaya grabbed Corey's hand tightly, "I'll make sure he gets back to his cabin safely and I'll have a conversation with Nana" she said sternly.

Keith looked slightly disappointed, "what am I going to do?" he asked.

Kaya shooed him away, "talk to one of your employees" she stated quickly dragging Corey along.

Corey reluctantly followed her persistent pull. He knew what was coming next.

"How could you?" Kaya screamed as soon as they were out of Keith's earshot.

Corey shrugged embarrassed by his behavior, truly revenge was beneath him, "You have a good man at home K, why are you doing this?" he asked softly.

Kaya looked down at her wedding ring, shined and polished without a crack, "I know" she sobbed. "But I'll never be good enough for him" she hiccuped.

Corey hugged her, no matter how wrong his friend was he loved her. True friendship wasn't about finding someone perfect but someone who accepted all of your flaws and loved you for it regardless.

Kaya had been Corey's friend for a long time. She had supported every fucked up phase of his life, even when he started to do heavy drugs. So maybe Corey could forgive her one more time.

"I'm sorry" Kaya wailed hugging her best friend.

Corey sighed, "I thought that inviting Ben on this trip would make us even. This was suppose to be payback for those hurtful words you said to me. The truth is revenge always makes two graves and by the time I realized that it was too late. I don't want to be like you Kaya" he sighed, "I don't want to hurt the people I love because I'm miserable" his words were soft but hurtful.

Kaya looked down at her feet ashamed. There were dry blisters under her eyes from crying to long and too often, "I don't want to do that anymore" she said firmly.

Corey slapped her square across the face, "then end this, so we can all have our Kaya back" he pleaded.

Kaya let the stinging vibrations settle in as Corey walked away.

Kaya sighed she walked bravely down the foyer of the ship, overlooking the crashing waves. Her husband was probably in the cabin room eagerly awaiting her return. She slipped past a sparse group of laughing people wishing she could be that carefree.

A hand roughly pulled her into the shadows behind a thin wall. She almost screamed but a large hand covered her mouth, "It's me" Ben whispered nibbling on her ear.

Kaya pushed him off as she caught her breath "you scared me!" she groaned.

Ben looked at her with eyes as deep as the ocean below, "I needed to see you" he mumbled.

Kaya shook her head, "no, I'm married and we can't-do this anymore" she said firmly.

Ben kissed her hand, "just one more lesson" he pleaded.

Kaya scooted away, "Are you deaf?" she asked angrily.

Ben hissed his teeth, "fine I'll tell your husband about us, problem solved" he said walking quickly ahead of Kaya.

Kaya's mouth dropped, "No! I have to be the one to do it" she argued pulling him back.

Ben stroked her cheek fondly, "do you honestly believe that your marriage can withstand this? Do you think your husband will just forgive you?" he whispered sadly, "you might as well entertain me one more time because your life will never be the same after you tell him" he reasoned.

Kaya said nothing the wind blew her curls messily across her face, "I'm going back to my room and I'm telling my husband" she said firmly.

Ben nodded, "Okay, but I'll be waiting tomorrow after midnight by the front point. I hope you decide to join me because I don't mind being a second choice for you" he glanced longingly at Kaya before walking away.

Kaya rolled her eyes, Ben was so persistent. It was almost romantic except for the fact that it would never be more than a booty call.

Kaya's hand trembled as she placed the card key into the door. She could hear Keith's merry voice even before she opened the door.

"Hey hunny!" Keith smiled yawning as he sat on the edge of the bed.

Kaya stood stiffly, "I have to tell you something" she squeaked.

Keith walked over to her side pulling her into his arms, "I know what you have to say" he smiled.

"You do?" Kaya asked confused.

Keith grabbed something from his luggage and pulled out a tiny gold bracelet, "This is for baby Luke or Luka" he said happily, "I knew you were going to surprise me but I wanted to surprise you too!" he grinned widely.

Kaya turned paste white and chalky as he put the bracelet on her wrist lovingly.

"I'm so happy you're pregnant! This is the best news I've gotten since you know..." Keith whispered holding Kaya, "It kind of fills the hole in my heart that gramps left" he cleared his throat wiping away a misty tear, "I couldn't have asked for a better wife" he sighed.

Luke was the name of Keith's grandfather. He had raised him into the man Keith was today. He had died a timeless death brave and respectable in all honors. Yet it never consoled the sadness that Keith had carried in his heart.

Kaya stood in horror as her head spun, "what baby?" she thought to herself but all she could muster was a half nauseous smile at Keith.

Keith raised an eyebrow at Kaya, "That's what you were going to tell me right?" he asked.

Kaya stuttered choking on her words, "yes...thanks" she said quickly.

Keith fluffed her pillows, "okay you must rest I insist, a mother to be, cannot stay up this late" he said gently guiding her to bed.

Keith looked strangely at Kaya, "baby you're forgetting something....Don't you need your flippers tonight?" he asked.

Kaya sobbed as Keith put them on.

Keith rubbed her back, "Hey don't cry angel, I know I'm scared too, being a dad for the first time is...." he ran his fingers through his hair, "crazy and overwhelming but I'm right here" he promised.

Keith put on his shoes, "I'm going to the ship's kitchen and grab you some tea" he whispered kissing her forehead, "you stay here and rest" he said firmly.

The guilt was heavier than cements blocks on Kaya's chest and the word "terrible" could not even describe how she felt now.

Her stomach hurt as if it was tied into painful knots. She had no idea why Keith assumed they were having a baby. It felt like murder to tell him that he never had a baby or a faithful wife.

Ben's words sank in like a rotting truth, and in that moment Kaya realized that she was nothing. She could never be the woman of Keith's dream when she had already destroyed his reality. Furthermore, she would never love Ben.

"We will just have to move" Kaya thought to herself. That would give her and Keith the fresh start they needed. They would never have to face Ben. Plus she would never have to mention the affair.

It was the perfect plan.

Yet another truth lingered in the air. She now had the problem of Keith thinking she was pregnant.

Kaya sighed she was exhausted from all of her lies, and slowly drifting into a troublesome sleep.

The next time Kaya opened her eyes a beautiful clear sky greeted her. The bright warm rays of the sun shined in through her window. She turned slowly over in the bed to see Keith looking fondly over her.

"Hey sleepy head," he said gently, "It's a little past noon, I guess the baby makes you exhausted. I didn't have the heart to wake you up" he laughed softly, "I got you some food" he handed her a plate.

The ship rocked back and forth as Kaya sat up, "thank you" she mumbled groggily.

Keith put on his sunglasses, "Come on, or else we are going to miss the ship activities before they stop in San-Diego!" Keith said excitedly.

Kaya got up eagerly, she decided that today would be his day. She would be the best damn wife she could be and then figure out how to bring up moving.

She pulled him Keith into her arms dragging him back into bed, showering him with wet kisses, "We can do something else" she suggest.

Keith groaned nuzzling his nose into her neck to inhale her natural flowery scent, "I kind of signed up for some of the activities, but I like the way your thinking. Can we continue this thought when we get back?" he asked.

Kaya bit her lip seductively, "okay I'll hold you to it" she winked smacking his butt playful.

Keith danced happily around the room, "this feels better than my birthday!" he commented.

The day came and went with beautiful sightseeing, shopping, and fun games. It felt like for once they were a normal happy unit. Keith was on top of the sky and enjoying the vibrant happiness of love and life.

Kaya was the perfect wife at that moment, showering her husband with attention and public displays of affection at every corner. They looked so madly in love people assumed they were on their honeymoon.

Night came like a speeding hand on a watch, the clouds fell behind the dark tapestry and the twinkling stars came out to play. Soon it would be a little past midnight and Kaya had a choice to make that would forever change her life.

Keith yawned, "baby, I'm sorry for being a poor sport but I really have to finish these worksheets with Esme" he groaned waiting for the beginning sparks of another fight.

Kaya sat on the comfy bed beside him eating a handful of popcorn, "It's okay I have plans with Nana" she said.

She got up slowly, "I'm going to go see her now, so you guys can have the room," she said eagerly.

Keith's mouth almost dropped, "really?..." he asked shocked. Then he smiled one of those goofy grins like a kid who had gotten everything they wanted, "You really are the best. I swear it's work related only. There's an office downstairs we can use that, she doesn't need to be in our room" he offered.

Kaya looked at the piles of paperwork and books in the corner, "that's going to be a pain to move all your things across the ship. Just work in here. I trust you" she said kissing him.

Keith groaned under the soft persuasion of her lips, "you know she doesn't have to come" he said sweeping some papers off the bed with one hand and laying next to Kaya.

Kaya laughed, "but I do! Nana's been taking it hard ever since the accident. As her daughter I owe it to her to fix this" she said firmly.

Keith sighed, "so do I, I'll stop by perhaps tomorrow and apologize" he muttered.

A gentle knock on the door broke their conversation.

"That's my cue to leave" Kaya laughed slipping on some shoes.

Keith opened the door, "Hello Ms. Toronto" he said greeting Esme formally.

"Hi Keith" Esme said stepping into their room.

"This is my lovely wife Mrs. Magono" he said introducing Esme to Kaya.

Esme looked skeptically at Kaya, "It's nice to meet you sober" she teased.

Kaya briskly walked past her, "I can't say the same" she replied curtly.

Keith groaned but kissed Kaya one more time, "we won't be too late" he promised.

Kaya left quickly she didn't have time for this, she had to go meet Ben one last time.

Keith laughed nervously rubbing his neck, "Well take a seat, anywhere but the bed" he said grabbing his files and folders.

Esme pursed her lip an agitated snarl formed at the corner of her lips, "Where is she going at this ungodly hour?" she asked.

Keith handed her some paperwork, "It's none of your business. If we didn't have a deadline for this paperwork in two hours we wouldn't be sitting here entertaining this meeting" he snapped.

Esme rolled her eyes, "You know what?! I'm getting tired of being your mistress" she snapped.

Keith dropped his papers looking shocked , "You must be on drugs! You have lost your rabbit ass mind. When have I ever entertained such bullshit?!" he yelled.

Esme blushed looking embarrassed, "I meant...mental mistress" she clarified.

Keith rubbed his forehead , "What the fuck is that?" he asked wearily.

Esme stood up bravely, leveling her eyes to his as she cornered him, "When you call me I come. When you need someone to pour your feelings and your problems on I listen. When you say speak I do, and when you tell me it's none of my business I shut up" she reached up to stroke his cheek, "we may not be doing anything physically but mentally I'm your your woman. When's the last time you talked to your wife about your problems? she asked confidently.

Keith backed away, "You're awful close, and I thought we were friends?" he asked confused.

Esme traced the symmetry of her body with her hand. Her curves were tightly aligned in her lavender dress, "yes but you want to be more. I can see it in your eyes" her husky voice curled around his spine as she looked up bashfully at him.

She locked the door behind her, "Nows your chance" she moaned letting her hair down.

Kaya waited patient at the meeting point. She pulled her shawl a little closer to her body as her eyes scanned a crowd of people in the distance.

A gentle hand pulled her in from behind, "I'm so happy you made it" Ben whispered kissing her neck.

Kaya's eyes rolled back like a wheel in spring tides with his sexy persuasion. She felt her blood coursing under his familiar smell and touch. A light aroma of raspberry paint lingered around him.

Kaya turned toward him with tears streaming down her eyes, "Kiss me like I'll never be loved" she cried making her choice.

Ben obliged her.

Esme reached for Keith's belt like a panther prowling for their next victim.

Keith moved quickly like a reflex grabbing her wrist and squeezing it tightly, "you're fired" he said pushing her off him, angrily.

Esme laughed tossing her head back, her baby hairs neatly curled on her heart shaped face"no I'm not" she said sternly.

Keith crossed his arms unable to believe what was going on, "leave or I will call security" he said already reaching for the cabin phone.

Esme grabbed the phone quickly tears forming in her eyes, "Wait!I know that you're a married man but would you entertain me if I wasn't?" she begged.

Her mint green eyes looked at him pitifully, like someone who just wanted to be loved.

Keith stuttered lost for words, as he admired her milky buttery skin, so soft and tangible. Or maybe it was every womanly curve on her full body that spelled out sin and twisted his needs and desires into lust riddled knots. Or perhaps it was her long brown hair and bee stung cherry lips.

"I love my wife so I will never entertain a "what if" scenario Esme. Now you've crossed the line and it hurts me because I thought you were a good employee. I can't have you and a perfectly happy marriage. So I choose Kaya, and that's the end. Please leave with whatever dignity you have left" Keith said opening the door.

Esme's shoulders dropped, "fine, but just know that your wife is out here cheating on you, with this so-called perfect marriage you're in," she said grabbing her stuff.

Keith froze, "what did you say?" he asked dangerously.

Esme shrugged, "Last night after you left the dinner, I saw her in the corner with some man, and they looked awful friendly" she hinted.

Keith shook his head enraged, "Stop lying! She was with Corey and Nana how dare you accuse her of such disgusting things for the sake of thirst" his voice echoed through the thin walls.

Esme was his match, his fire was nothing compared to her's. She swiveled angrily around screaming in his face, "Fire me!! Do whatever you want but don't ever call me a fucking liar" she cursed pointing a dangerously sharp finger in his face.

Keith angrily put on his shoes, "let's go find my wife, so she can put this to an end. Once she exposes you for the liar you are, then I want you off this boat even if you have to swim home!".

Ben slowly undressed Kaya kissing her milk duds hungrily, while she perspired and shivered like falling rose petals, "are you sure no one will find us here?" she whimpered.

Ben unclasped her bra letting her breast spill out onto his hands, "No one ever uses this room, it's used for storage only" he said shushing her worries with his kiss.

A loud banging interrupted Corey's tv show, "WHO THE HELL IS IT?" he called out.

"It's me, I need to talk to my wife" Keith replied.

"She ain't here!" Corey said opening the door.

"Why the fuck is this cheap Dorito swamp burrito with you?" Corey snapped when he saw Esme.

Keith put his hand up, "I don't have time for this tonight, she was with you last night though correct?" His voice cracked as he looked desperately around for his wife.

Corey scratched his head, "Ummm no, "Keith what the fuck is going on, you look like you're about to pass out?" he asked concerned.

Esme grabbed Keith's hand, "let's go to the storage room on the lower deck" she explained, "I have a hunch we might find her there" she said excitedly.

Corey grabbed his shoes, "Hell no you ain't going nowhere with roach-chita whore-chata .Nana and I are coming too" he huffed.

Nana grabbed her purse, "are we going to a quinceanera?" she asked.

Corey looked nervously at Keith and then whispered, "he looks ready to beat someone but candy ain't gonna come out this time" he murmured.

Ben settled on top of Kaya exploring her body with his hands. His tongue flickered down her skin, like the fine strokes of a brush.

"Is someone coming?" Kaya moaned hearing light but frantic footsteps in the distance.

"Hopefully you," Ben said sliding his head between her legs.

Kaya arched her back up like a bridge screaming on the edge of pleasure as she grabbed a handful of Ben's hair and yanked.

"Kaya?" a soft uncertain voice called out in the darkness.

"Keith!" Kaya screamed horrified. She immediately pushed Ben off her and scrambled to put her clothes back on.

The storage room was dark and empty and Keith could only see the faint shadows and outline of bodies.

Keith lunged at Ben, "you sick bitch! You drugged my wife and forced yourself onto her" he cursed.

Ben didn't have enough time to avoid Keith's powerful punches as he attacked him in the dark.

The impact was bone crunching as a loud "crack" echoed when Keith's fist connected to Ben's jaw, again and again.

Kaya screamed thrashing around in the dark to pull her husband away from Ben, "stop it!" she sobbed, "he didn't drug me! I came here willingly. I cheated it's my fault!" she confessed trying to hold her husband back.

Keith stood frozen with a raised fist, and blood on his knuckles. He blinked staggering blindly around like a injured animal as he felt the violent impact of his wife's words. At that moment something other than Ben's jaw broke.

Keith looked at his wife staring at her like a stranger as daggers and bullets pierced his open heart.

Kaya pounded her tiny fist on his chest, "say something please!" she wailed.

Keith grabbed his chest a look of excruciating pain ripped across his face. He stumbled back falling over nothing as the tears rained down like acid. A tiny whimper escaped his raw voice before he took off running.

Ben laid sprawled out on the floor lifeless as Kaya took off after Keith.

Keith ran sprinting towards the bow of the boat, he leaned heavily over the edge as if to throw up, but then he quickly climbed over the railing.

"Keeeeeeeith!!!!" Kaya screamed as Esme, Corey and Nana came running behind them.

Tears streamed down his eyes as he closed them and put his hands out, "I can't-do this without you. It hurts so bad! I just need it to stop, turn off the pain." he screamed repeating those haunting words over and over again.

Keith was crying so hard that his gasp were turning into dry heaves. His happy hazel eyes had died out, turning pale like crisp leaves; swollen and puffy.

Nana and Corey stood sobbing watching a man attend his own funeral, as Keith screamed and screamed.

There are some things you can't take back, like seconds in reverse it was the same pain over and over again. It felt like someone had taken a shovel and ripped out his heart, beating it senselessly until blood spilled out and it stopped pulsing.

Life was a confusing haze. Keith began to wonder why God?! His eyes were blood red as snot and tears trickled into each other. He leaned forward as if to touch the darkened waves.

Corey took Nana's hand and they ran to get help.

Esme sobbed taking tiny steps toward him.

"Why?!" he howled swaying dangerously on the ledge of the ship. There were no bars or handles to hold him steady and with the natural rock of the ship, he inched a little closer to a afterlife.

The water looked so enticing to him, like maybe he could go for a cold swim and wake up from this nightmare. The least that could happen is he would fall in and his heart would be frozen.

The wind whipped at his eyes blinding his vision but it was okay he couldn't see anything but the pain anyway.

Kaya covered her face in shame, "because...because" she couldn't bring herself to say.

"Goddamit he's going to go over!" Esme cursed her heart raced as she continued to get closer.

"Why?!" Keith asked again taking another shaky step forward. If life was nothing but a dream, then why did it hurt so much?

The waves opened their arms to him, calling to the fallen broken angel.

Keith's foot slipped on the wet end of the flooring.

"Why?!" He yelled angrily as his hands flailed as he started to fall backwards.

Kaya screamed reaching for him trying to grab some part of him, "because I've been pretending! I've been pretending to be a scared little wife! Pretending to have fears that I don't just so you would stay with me. The truth is I am broken Keith, I can't give you kids and I can't have sex with you" she confessed.

Keith was barely clinging on. Half of his body was in the open spaces of the sky and only his two hands were grasping the ledge painfully keeping his body up as he trembled.

He wondered if there was peace on the other side of hurt? He wondered if this is what it felt like to free fall into a pit of misery.

The waves crashed gleefully below watching and waiting.

Keith gritted his teeth as his body started to feel extremely tired, "why?" he sobbed his whole body shaking.

"I had cancer in my ovaries, when we first started dating, so I had to have a hysterectomy."  Kayla confessed sadly.

Keith gasped letting go.
