How to WRITE SMUT 1

Warning: I will be talking about/saying/writing dirty shit. 18+ content, so don't report. Just go off somewhere else <3
I am not a professional in anyway, I am just compiling what I personally do in order to help others figure out their style and what they're good at. This is just advice and suggestions. In no means do you have to take what I say as law.

So, for those of you who don't know me, or have been skipping around (as if I have like 50 chapters 🤦‍♀️), I'm Luca. I use the name Luca, a gender neutral name, because I am horribly afraid of my friends finding me on here. Read any of my content to figure out what I mean—I write about of sex. I'm also pretty generally confused about my gender and sexuality (and am not even close to out of the closet amongst peers).

The fact that I had to hide a lot of what I feel and think probably made me go a little crazy, and seek out gratification through other means. I'm also pretty curious, and started having sex at a young age. In fact, I joined wattpad like two months after I first had sex at 14. I am OLD now. If 20 is old.

Anyways, here is where I will delve into my thought processes when writing smut or sex scenes (which I find to be two distinct types of writing).

First, my distinction here is—in essence—the literary equivalent of what porn vs. erotica is (videography vs. written word). Smut, or at least how I define it, is written porn (whether it be OC or fanfiction). Sex scenes are usually not as detailed, more focused on foreplay, and end with some ambiguous bullshit right before the act. They're meant to be poetic, or consumed by a broad audience. You know when you're sitting there thinking, "Are they? Oh, well next scene they wake up naked in bed." That's a sex scene. !Not to say there is anything wrong with that! But, know your story and your audience. If I were to write a book to be consumed by older adults (30+) I probably wouldn't write:

"I ran my tongue from the base of his dick to the tip, swirling it around like an ice cream cone."

That's something I would write for new adults (18-25). I would write something more like this for older adults:

"I looked up into his eyes as I got down on my knees and unzipped his pants. He ran his hand through my hair and sucked air sharply through his teeth. He didn't pull it, or press my head, but caressed my hair as he held eye contact."

Naturally, these are shitty quick examples. As you can see, the difference is most in the mindset. Sex is versatile, so why shouldn't I be in my writing! And this is a generalization. There's definitely going to be books for older adults with KINKY ASS SHIT, but they normally are going to chose specific books that are basically Hentai plots like 50 Shades. (They know exactly what you're getting, raunchy porn with plot). So when you're reading a book and there's only one sex scene where it's just not more artistic than raunchy, it'll be a turn off. But! I'll help you out so your smut or sex scenes can sound horrifyingly hot or be sexy but tasteful.

Smut

I find that the key to writing really good smut is to be as nasty as possible. Take your inner slut (yes, we are reclaiming this word and I belong to the anime streets) and fuck the shit out of them. Find those scenes when you're reading smut that make you put your phone down and scream internally, giggle maniacally, or take a lap. You know the ones I'm talking about. Be your most disgusting self. If you aren't questioning your sanity and considering chugging holy water after, you aren't getting deep enough. A lot of what writing—and what your readers really enjoy—is that introspection. If you enjoy writing it, if you enjoy sex or watching porn or reading smut, it will be clear in your writing.

Why is this so important?

Well, my friend, I'm glad you asked.

If you enjoy writing it, then it will shine through to your characters—whether or not they're OCs. If your characters enjoy it, whether or not the reader is down with that kink or sort of play, they still might enjoy it. And, hell, maybe they'll realize they enjoy something.

It's similar to the concept where if someone gives you a smile randomly, you at least try to smile back. Whether or not you end up looking like Kageyama is besides the point. You still smiled back.

The problem is, when you write something you're uncomfortable with or don't enjoy, your readers will notice. THEY WILL I PROMISE. If you've read my aged up Kuroo x Akaashi band AU "Irusu: Ikigai" (the sequel to Irusu) you can tell Akaashi hated a lot of what was happening, and this could be shown in part but my hesitation to write it. I literally couldn't write some of it and used a dissociative state, so naturally, my readers will also feel uncomfy™️.

Writing is about discovery, and the trust of the trinity (reader, writer, characters). And with smut, maybe you'll find something you want to try in the bedroom.

Now, the second key to writing pure smut is to be as disgusting as possible. Here, when I say disgusting, I don't mean they have to spit in each other's mouths (#degrademe#spitinmymouthgojou) or have scat play (sorry if you're into scat play, I'm not one to kink shame but I just can't). You need to be descriptive. This is much different from simply being your nastiest self. This comes down to the style and scene.

This sounds obvious. Yes, yes, I know that is the point of writing. But I have read and written plenty of bone (HAH) dry smut. It's just not as juicy. "Why isn't is juicy?" you might ask. "Luca-senpai, *le gasp* did they not use enough lube?"

No. It was dry because it's boring to read. That's why. You can write a scene and they can be using whips and chains and they love the smell of it (😂🤚i need to stop), but for god's sakes:

!!!USE IMAGERY AND SENSORY INFORMATION. WHAT KIND OF SENSATION IS IT WHEN THE WHIP HITS???? THINK OF LA CHANCLA🩴🩴🩴 WE HAVE MOMMY ISSUES WE KNOW EXACTLY WHZT IT COULD FEEL LIKE!!!!

Even when you write smut where there is ZERO emotion or love or interest in anything but getting off, it still has to come across as juicy.

Why we read smut: to essentially get the same effects as porn or to satisfy some strange desire (like my strange obsession with TOXIC gay manhwa or doujinshi or just generally terrifying sexual tropes). With visual forms of media, you don't have to imagine the position or their pace or really do much work other than moving your hand. Smut is more sensual because you can actually get inner dialogue, the way it smells in relation to something else, the taste, the softness of their skin.

Description. As far as description goes, there should be movement and sensory details. Whether or not you are using metaphors and similes and fucking whatever else doesn't matter as much if the reader can picture it in their head. If you're writing fluffier smut or they're in love, the way they speak to each other, how their lover looks from their perspective, should give that impression. The way they fuck or touch or suck. Straight-up dirty smut with little to no emotional attachment should reflect that. So, you should be describing the position, the FOREPLAY, the sounds, the voice. I don't just need to know about that their nipples look like rosebuds or their face is flushed or that they're sweaty. How did they notice they were sweaty, or that their nipples are pretty, or what exactly made their face flush (or was it their neck or chest, and did it rush across the skin, or did they darken slowly like the deep red raised from within them?)

Here is an example (let's try female x female since I don't do it enough :3):

"... Her lips glistened from my wetness, a thick popping sound as she pulled off my clit. Her teeth closed around a section of skin, just between my leg and navel. I gasped from the shock of sensitivity. It tickled, but made me hot. I resisted the urge to lift my hips up towards her, and she dipped down once more, those swollen red lips disappearing between my thighs.

But I could still see her eyes, and I had to close my own. They glinted in the lowlight, like a cat's catching a headlight. The molten brown color made me squirm, as they were feral and felt no mercy as they enraptured my own once more.

My pussy ached against her tongue, and the burn from her nails sinking into my hips held me in place.

I spread my legs more and more as the pressure built in my abdomen. I reached down to cup her cheeks. I wanted to taste her, to feel her soft rose petal lips on mine. She looked up, brows quirked together a bit as if angry I interrupted her.

Then the crease between her brows smoothed, and I moved my thighs off her shoulders. She pressed her hands down onto the bedding, her ass lifted up in the air, perfectly curved and perfectly red from my palm. Her spine curved as her hair spilled across my chest, brushing against my nipples and stomach, making me yelp as she flattened her tongue against me.

She licked up to my jaw, leaving a cold tingling absent of her touch. I arched my back, our chests brushing together for a moment. I needed her, at that moment. And I think she knew, like she could smell it when she took a deep breath nuzzled against my neck.

She eased her lips to my chin, hovering over my mouth, and as I moved to her, I saw the smile in her eyes. Her lips planted on the corner of my mouth, and when I tried to turn my head, her manicured nails gripped my chin to hold me in place as she made her way to the crook of my neck. Her fingers slipped down my chest, squeezing my tit, circling her thumb over the nipple, before finding their ways down back between my legs. ..." —An excerpt from a story I will 100% be writing now.

Note: I am not a professional by any means, so if the movement is jumbled and confusing that's why. If you didn't think this was hot as hell, this is a great opportunity to figure out why. Was there a specific piece that brought you out?

Notice how I described her sensually? I showed the type of lover she was, the way she moved, and where she touched. There wasn't a description of the woman's appearance other than details you may focus on during sex (tits, ass, eyes, and movement). My writing here isn't the most nuanced. I don't know who these girls are deep inside, but you get a glimpse into what their relationship might be like outside of the bedroom. There is just enough to be sexy, sensual, make you think about some dirty shit, but I left out enough so that you immediately imagined someone to your own liking. Other than the brown eyes, the other girl could be whoever your reader wants them to be.

With fanfiction, writing smut is much easier. In general, writing fanfiction is easier than original characters. They already have their own habits and personalities established, so all you have to do is twist it. There are established tropes or headcanons associated with the character, and breaking them isn't hard inside the bedroom. And, for most fanfiction, you're dealing with characters who haven't actually had sex. Bokuto Koutarou could be Kuroo's pillow princess but make Akaashi dread trying to walk in the morning. Sukuna might be aggressive and angry and hate being touched, but in bed, he might want eye contact and your foreheads pressed together and to hold you as he rails you. And so on. You can apply this concept to basically any existing character. And maybe, they're exactly what you want and more. Sex is to grant fantasies and give pleasure, and as a writer, not only are you making it come true for others, but you're living it as you write it. Enjoy it.

Reminder: There are also nuances to writing certain kinds of smut—mentioned above briefly—which I will go into detail about later on.

Anyways, the reader will usually be able to tell what kind of smut they're about to read by the precursor. Of course, there are instances where the scene starts in the middle of sex, but those tend to get progressively more intense. I mentioned before the trinity of trust, and this is where it applies. The reader finds your story through a series of tags and searches, and so they're bound to test the waters. If they're a heinous human being who needs to be drowned in holy water (like me), they might not give TWO SHITS about whatever is going to happen. In fact, they (*cough* me, out of curiosity *cough*)  might have been looking for the FemDom Kiyoko x Tanaka. I mean, someone is bound to have written it.

But, a lot of the time a reader is looking for something specific. What I mentioned up there is a great example as far as "specific" goes. Whether they find it or not is the point where they open it and begin reading. If they don't find FemDom Kiyoko, they might find a BDSM with Kiyoko in latex (You right now be like: 👁👄👁 ➖👄➖ 👁👄👁). Here is where the trust starts. If they want vanilla, they'll keep reading if the beginning is vanilla.

Sometime in the first couple paragraphs is where they'll realize what they may be getting into. Within a tag like, say BDSM or vanilla, there is still a spectrum of light vs. hardcore. With FemDom Kiyoko you might get some #degrademe type dirty talk, latex, and spanking or you can get a full blown Red Room/sex dungeon. If the reader isn't looking for sex dungeon, then you need to let them know (with subtlety through writing, and also TW at the top depending on what goes on).

The biggest point of my rambling is: Whether or not they're right doesn't matter because there is a natural progression to actual sex (YOU CANT JUST STICK IT IN. FOREPLAY SHOULD TAKE A DECENT AMOUNT OF TIME. WILL BE DISCUSSING THIS LATER BECAUSE I AM SICK AND TIRED OF READING ANAL SHIT AND THERE BEING NO LUBE OR PREP. CMON WE ARE BETTER THAN THIS😤. Thanks.)

If you're writing fluffy, toothache, "I love you/I miss you/we were cuddling just now" smut, the way the smut is going to start is going to be slower, and most of it will center around the foreplay. The sex is going to start with kissing and slow movements, and probably a few sex positions (will be discussed later in a separate chapter). The clothes will be removed sensually, there might be a bit of toy play, yadda yadda. Vanilla shit is about the build-up. If you're starting off pretty fluffy, that isn't to say you can't have them literally rip each other's clothes off and fuck like animals. I'm not saying that at all. What I'm saying is, there needs to be build up, foreplay, and they will eventually start having sex. There has to be some establishment of situation before you get right into it.

If the relationship is already established and they've tried a lot of toys before, there will be some pretty clear suggestions towards that. And if you read smut that isn't tagged as BDSM, but someone gets tied up, it should be after like 1,000 words of dirty talk, edging, and foreplay. The smut might also be more intense, but using a situation like getting tied up can establish the situation. You should still include some form of foreplay, whether it be like 3 paragraphs where you establish the setting and characters (relationship) before you tie them up and they get head or if they start tied up, there should be like a decent amount of time before they fuck.

If it's like rough sex or a one-night stand, you can usually tell by (unfortunately) quicker foreplay, more aggression from the characters, and even the way they address each other before the sex begins. Even if the characters are in a relationship with aggressive sex, both of the characters are focused on each other rather than themselves as in a one night stand setting.

Characters can go from "I wuv u🥺" to "I'm going to fuck you until you're screaming and begging, but I'm not gonna stop 😈." But usually, the writing gives away what you're getting into because they slowly get there. A reader will notice this and dip out if they need to.

My Direct Advice

Figuring out what you like, what you like to write, and what you like to consume is pretty important. Maybe you like fifty dude gang bangs but write morning sex and reunion-type scenes. It doesn't matter what you like or write but you have to try or you'll never know.

Use the private browser on your phone, or if you watch on the computer however that works, and watch some porn. Read some hentai or smut. Get fuckin' busy. Do anatomy research and read sex therapy questions (which I will soon add to this book). Google kama sutra and see what you learn. There is a whole different world of sex that you can go explore, and not only will this help you in your writing, but this will ultimately help you in your actual life.

Sex is about self-love. It relieves stress and generally makes you feel good. For all my peeps with coochies, period sex relieves cramps for some. Either way, this is all I have to say for now.

Feel free to comment with questions, concerns, or things you would like me to address in later chapters. Next time, it'll be part two of "Sex Scenes vs. Smut: The Tasteful Fuck."
