'Are you happy now?'
— Unknown
A bitter chill collapsed against your skin as the car door slammed shut behind you, igniting the night around you. You had a blanket sealed tightly around your shoulders to keep the raw breeze from colliding with your wet skin. Despite having the heater on full blast, it wasn't exactly aiding you now that you were out in the open, stumbling up the steps to the compound, Happy right by your side. If anything coming out of the warmth and into the icy cold had made everything worse.
Once you were safe inside the building, Happy tugged the blanket from your shoulders making you whine, turning to face him. He was folding the blanket neatly and placing it down on the chair at the reception before marching back towards you. He placed a sympathetic hand on your back, cautiously guiding you through the building and into the centre where there was a large living quarters surrounded by balconies leading off into different rooms.
"Okay, I want you to take this and go to room 24" Happy instructed, handing you a sealed bottle. You swallowed, taking the item carefully before looking at Happy with puzzled eyes. "It'll make sense when you get up there, now go before you freeze to death" he ushered you off to the stairs where you quickly picked up your pace, almost tripping on the metal staircase as you ran upwards.
Your eyes followed the numbers along with the doors until you found number twenty-four. The door was black, very modern like paired with a long silver handle that braced from the top to the bottom, much like a refrigerator. The number was enclosed by different drawing and stickers, non-surprisingly the majority of them being of Spider-Man. You pushed the door open, quickly realising it must have been locked before it slid to the side.
"Oh, duh" you facepalmed, realising the door slid to the side and was not a push or pull navigation. The room was well lit and much bigger than you had interpreted. Your jaw practically snapped off of your cheekbones and rolled across the floor, which was a polished wood. The room was practically luxury, but of course, it was funded by Stark Industries so what could you expect?
At the back of the room was a large window that flooded one whole wall and breached onto the second, the view looking over the entire city. In the centre of the room, there was a small, glass coffee table accompanied by a grey couch that sat beside a flat-screen TV. The ceiling was a polished white, where luminous white lights sat in the padding of the material, not a single shadow in the room. The wallpaper was a shallow gold, decorated with small white dots and the bed... Fit for a queen. The sheets were tucked in perfectly, not a single crease insight and masses amounts off pilows sat at the head of the bed.
In the centre of the bed sat what looked like an envelope, and your curiosity getting the better of you, you were instantly drawn towards it. You unzipped your wet jacket, tossing it onto the grey couch beside the coffee table and placed down the bottle on the bedside table. Your nimble fingers reached out for the slip of paper, picking it up carefully and unfolding it, eyes wandering through the writing until you saw your name.
Y/N,
Please ensure to take a small dosage of the remedy I have set out for you in the container you should have received by now. Make sure to keep warm, a shower is recommended.
- Regards, Happy
A smile fell to your cheeks before you looked back, seeing the container sitting on the bedside table. You folded the note back into the envelope and turned your attention back to the item that Happy had given you. The lid slid off easily and you quickly got a rather strong scent of lavender and green tea. It made your face scrunch a little in discomfort, but once the first wave had passed you got the chance to take a peek at what the liquid looked like.
To your surprise, it was clear, much like water, and seemed completely harmless. You shrugged, taking a sip of the remedy and made sure to stay on high alert as it touched your lips. The sensation was strange, nothing like what water would have felt like. It was equivalent to drinking... A cotton ball. Which, figuratively speaking, is impossible.
The fluid soothed your roaring throat and hit your stomach like a feather, quickly warming your insides and drawing out the cold. You decided to savour some of the liquid for later, and after a few more sips you returned the cap to the bottle, screwing it on extra tight.
After placing the container back down and rubbing your cold hands along your thighs, your attention was averted to the large window at the back of the room. The view was breathtakingly beautiful, you couldn't help but press on further towards the glass. There you stood for what felt like hours, watching the city out in the distance, lights flashing. The sun was beginning to rise far away in the distance, a hazel glow starting to blemish the clouds along the horizon.
Your short-lived daydream was suddenly interrupted when you heard the door click, padded feet joining you in the silence. You turned around to see Peter, standing out like a saw thumb in the bright room. His suit was slim to nothing, hair dishevelled and a long bruise running down the side of his face. Your jaw dropped once again, not a single word leaving your lips before you were running towards him, missing the counting in your blessings as you leapt into his arms, wrapping your arms and legs around his posture. You didn't care if you were weak and cold, you needed to be in his arms.
"Oh my god, Peter it's really you, it's you, oh my- are you hurt?" You spat out in a quick gush of words, picking your head off his chest so you could face him, hands cupping his cheeks as his arms wrapped around the lower half of your body. Your thumb caressed the side of his face soothingly, brows scrunching as the bruise looked a lot darker up close.
"I'm fine, but it doesn't matter about me, are you okay?" he pleaded, placing you back down on your feet so he could scan your body. You were only a little messy to say you had been for a late-night swim in Queen's lake, but aside from that, all the pain had been numbed away with your mind being focused on Peter. But all he could focus on was you; the gash so close to your eye, the bruises on your wrists and your bloodshot eyes, "when was the last time you ate? Slept? Drank?"
"Peter, I'm okay as long as you're okay, okay?" you smiled, hand pressing into his jaw. His head leaned into your touch, bringing you closer to him, bodies flush against one another.
"I'm okay" he smiled down at you, finally being able to savour the feeling of your warm touch, the admiration he savoured for your soft face and well-rounded cheeks. "So, you like my room?"
"This is your room?" you tilted your head, feeling him slide his hand into yours as you turned around, "well, then again, the door is decorated with Spider-Man stickers" you giggled.
"I've barely slept in here" he sighed, bringing you into the centre of the room, "It... It can get kinda lonely and... May needed me" you watched as his eyes averted around the room, drinking in the sight of the place he had always considered home, but never claimed the desire to stay.
"You worry too much, Peter" you shook your head, sighing lightly, "when was the last time you did something for yourself?"
Peter turned his gaze to look down at you, lips curving into an unsatisfied frown, "what are you talking about?"
"Well, when I do something for myself, I'll I dunno, go shopping when I'm supposed to be saving my money for college fees or go get a manicure even though it's so not my thing" you shrugged, "there has to be something that you can do that satisfies you"
Peter pondered on the thought for a moment, licking his bottom lip before taking it between his teeth, "honestly, just being with you is everything I've ever needed"
You tilted your head, a sad smile approaching the tips of your lips as you brought him in for a hug, "I'll always be around to satisfy you, Pete"
You felt his lips as they kissed the crown of your head tenderly, hands stroking the small of your back as you rocked on your feet in the silence for a moment.
"Hey uh, not to kill the mood but I really need to go shower" you smiled nervously, pulling away so he could unfold his arms from around your waist.
"Oh, uh, yes, of course, it's this way" he smiled nervously, guiding you down the hall towards the bathroom. The room was rather small but fit so much into it. The shower was tucked away in the wall, guarded by the blacked-out glass. The walls were a smokey grey, surrounded by white skirting boards and white polished marble attire on the sink. Your eyes shone in the dim lighting, so comforting and warm.
"I'll leave some towels on the toilet for you" he smiled turning on his heel to head out the door.
"Thanks, Pete" you mumbled back, watching as he turned over his shoulder and shot you a smile, "no problem"
Once Peter had closed the door you nervously undressed and clambered into the shower. The floor was rather cold and bone dry surprisingly, but you presumed Peter had never used the shower considering he barely ever stayed. Your hand hovered over the wheel to the water pressure, turning it slowly to feel a warm gush of water flow down your back. A gentle hum left your lips as you stood there for a while, allowing your hands to glide up and down as your body soaked in the new heat.
Once you were completely soaked, you glanced around the shower room, eyes catching onto some bottles sitting on the soap ledge. They were rather small, but there were masses of selections. You chose the blueberry bottle, as it was the closest and most appealing to your eye, squeezing the bottle tightly in one hand and watching as he blue substance poured into your other palm. It felt nice to finally be able to relax, becoming fresh and clean the more time you spent under the water, and knowing that Peter was waiting for you just outside only made your heart flutter more.
Once you were finished in the shower, sure enough, Peter had left you a large selection of towels. You had the option to finally have one in your hair and one around your body, which wasn't usually a privilege you got to endure, seeing as back at your apartment you were a little behind on laundry. You also saw that there was a pile of clothes sitting in the sink, non on which you recognised. Of course, they were Peter's clothes, but if anything you preferred wearing his attire. They were rather big on your body, but they were snug and of course, smelled just like him.
As you came to admire your reflection in the mirror, you were shocked to see an unfamiliar person looking back at you. Sure enough, it was you, but you looked... Different. Your face had been toned down to a much darker shade, the cut down the side of your face accentuated in the shadowing of the bruises under your eyes. You brought your hand to your cheek to assess the wound when you caught sight of the gashes along your wrists. It made you want to scream in displeasure.
Quickly, you pulled open the mirror door, searching through the contents along the shelf until you found some cream and a bandage wrap. You threw the contents into the sink after removing the clothes and began unscrewing the cap to the cream, applying a small amount to the tip of your finger and gently began caressing it into the wounds along your skin. They were shallow, but it still stung, clenching your teeth together as you tried to ignore the pain.
Once you were satisfied that the wounds would heal in good time, you opened the packaged bandage and began unravelling it, tightening it around each of your wrists before tearing it off with your teeth. You tucked the loose end into the top of the wrap next to your thumb, keeping it in place. As you stood there now, you allowed yourself to breathe for a moment. It was more that you had covered the wounds for the reason that you simply didn't want to look at them. The past events were ones that you wanted to erase from your memory as soon as possible, and looking at them constantly wasn't going to aid your need.
After changing into the clothes that Peter had selected for you, you pulled your hair from the towel and began running your fingers through the still damp ends, tilting your head to the side so it would fall past your shoulder. You didn't have a brush, so combing your fingers through your locks was your only option.
After your hair was as straight as you could possibly get it, you threw away the rubbish from the bandage package into the bin behind the sink, folded the towels and headed out of the bathroom. The room was empty upon your return, as you had expected to see Peter waiting for you. The TV had been switched on, for some reason an episode from The Looney Tunes sat playing quietly in the background as you took a seat on the bed. You sighed in defeat as you sank into the pillows, stretching yourself into a starfish, hogging the entire mattress as your head sank into the cushions. You knew you'd guaranteed wake up with neck ache from the levitation of your head, but you were too comfortable to care. With the fresh sheets and the smell of Peter, you were in heaven. All you needed now was him beside you, and you knew you'd be complete.
