15. A Fake Reality

Severance
Chapter 015

Beep.. Beep.. Beep...

I pried my eyes open upon hearing the most annoying sound coming from Arthur's alarm clock. I felt as his heavy arm moved over me to reach for his phone. I simply groaned to let him know it woke me also.

"Sorry, I forgot to turn them off I guess." He mumbled quietly.

"What.. time?" I exhaled out as I stretched my back out as he pulled his phone off the charger and sat back on his side of the bed.

"It's eight," he replied, "I guess I'll head out to get breakfast so what do you want?"

I pushed myself up and pressed my lips together as my eyes went back to their natural position and shut, "I dunno, maybe just a frappe or something of that sort to be honest... Pancakes? Surprise me." I spoke, wondering what I was hungry for at this hour.

"I'll surprise you by bringing home fireworks." He murmured as he rolled out of bed and headed towards the bathroom to wash up.

After laying in place for another minute with my head back and my eyes shut, I heard him exiting the bathroom again, "I'll be back in a little, love you," he spoke.

"Mkay, love you too." I replied tiredly.

I opened my eyes back up and reached over for my phone on the table and scrolled through my notifications.

A few alerts from my games telling me to go play them again, and an update from wattpad telling me that the best author ever @kirkland_had updated one of her stories, finally... I swear, the last time she updated, Obama was still president. ;•)

Anyways, after scrolling through some memes on instagram I decided to get out finally and be productive before Arthur returned with the food.

I headed to the bathroom and pulled out my toothbrush and began brushing when suddenly I received a text message from an unknown number.

Them: Hello?

I quickly replied back.

Me: Yo yo bro

Them: ________ _________?

For a short moment I felt my heart stop, why does this random person know my number? I thought it over for a moment but then calmed back down, it was probably one of my friends who got a new number to tell me even though I'll probably never text them back.

Me: Yes, who this?

Them: Hi, this is Jamie, Elizabeth gave me your number. Sorry if it's early, but she said you'd be picking me up later so I was texting you to tell you my address. It's ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"

I spat out the toothpaste and raised a brow as I stared at my phone.

Oh right. That's today.

Me: Okay cool thanks, what time?

Jamie: Well I'm in school right now, but you can pick me up at the middle school at three."

Me: I thought you were in high school?

Jamie: I am, but the bus stops there after it picks me up.

Me: Okay cool, will do. Text me the middle school's name and I'll be there at 3 then."

I put my phone back down and finished washing up before exiting and heading down to the living room where I sat on the couch as I awaited my lovely food.

On the couch, I reached back for my phone once again to take a quick glance at the time, only two minutes had really passed since Jamie messaged me. My eyes felt droopy as I stretched out on the couch and reached for the remote. Why was I so tired anyways? I sleep a lot as it is.

I let out a long, well deserved sigh and swung my phone out again.

Me: hhey good morning :P

I then just sat on the couch whilst staring directly at the phone. I waited for the little 'read' to finally pop up, and after a few short minutes, it did.

Alfredo Sauce: Good morning!

Not wanting to seem to eager, I waited a moment before replying again.

Me: What are you up to?

Alfredo Sauce: Getting dressed, me and my gf are going to go out tonight

Me: I still have to meet her :1

Alfredo Sauce: then move back to the USA !!! :D

Me: It's just so pretty here in Europe! Bring her here or at least face time dammit!

Alfredo Sauce: soooon.. But she's really chill, i think you'll like her also :3

Me: Mhmm
Me: Does she know you're gonna be coming over here anyways, next year?

Alfred Sauce: Yeah, we've talked about it. She either doesn't seemed phased or she doesn't care though lol, I'm gonna be leaving her for like two months next week also

Me: Oh damn. That's rough
Me: At least it'll be a heck of a meetup when you get back ;)

Alfredo Sauce: Yeeee don't say that she's too innocent

Me: lol okay sure, well, it sounds like my breakfast just entered the building, see ya later dude

With that, I put my phone back in my back pocket and made my way back towards the kitchen where Arthur was already digging into the bag of food.

"You said.. Pancakes right? Or am I hearing things?" Arthur asked as he pulled two containers out, each containing a stack of pancakes.

"Regardless, I purchased two."

"Aw, so then what are you going to eat?" I joked as I reached for one of the plastic forks and jabbed it into my pancake.

"Hilarious, but if you touch my food, I'm taking half of everything you own." He shot a joking glare.

"You know, I think I'm free all the way until three later, I'm just saying that we can do a whole lot until then." I spoke as I took a bite out of my food.

Arthur's huge ass eyebrows raised as he glanced up at me, "Like what?"

I gave a sly smile as I looked up at him, "Oh I think you know, mister-"

---

I wiped a tear from the corner of my eyes, "God, I love Pirates of the Caribbean." I sniffed.

"I used to be an actual pirate in the Caribbean, I'm highly offended.. No man can be as lucky as he is!" Arthur furrowed his brows as he moved his hand from around my waist so that he could reach for his drink again.

"Yeah? Well you still watched like three of the movies with me just now." I spoke up.

"I fell asleep during the second movie actually." He admitted.

"Traitor.." I squinted as I stood up once again and headed to my room to put on some real clothes to head out.

Real clothes being, sweatpants, my grey converse, and a white T-shirt. I then reached for my bag and made sure my cards were in it before heading back into the living room, "Yo, I'm gonna pick Jamie up, I'll be back in like half an hour."

"Alright, drive safe, don't forget your hearing aid, Miss."

"Ah yes, I left that right by your tampons, Sir." I sneered back as I made my way out and down to my car.

---

I slowly pulled into a parking spot at the middle school Jamie texted me to go to. It wasn't enormous but it still looked pretty large, at least from the outside. I got out and looked around a bit at the crowd of stinky schoolkids.

Me: Jammieee I'm here, where are you?

There was no response for a while so I looked back up. I noticed that the buses were all parked in the side of the school and on the sidewalk, walking around the corner was Jamie beside a young boy. I raised a brow as she turned and clearly made eye contact with me. She quickly turned back towards the boy and gave him a tight hug before waving him goodbye and walking towards me.

She looked flushed as she walked towards the passengers side.

"Hi, _________." She spoke quickly.

"Hello Jamie~" I slurred with a smile as I sat back in my car, "So who's your friend?" I asked.

"He's in one of my classes." She murmured, "So where to today?" She quickly changed the topic.

"Hmm.. I'll tell you what. Tell me who your friend is and I'll start the car." I said, turning the engine off.

Her face began to turn colours as she looked away, "no," she replied.

"Oh, come on, I'm bored." I admitted.

She frowned, "That's not a good reason."

"I don't care, come on, aren't we supposed to be friends until Liz gets back?" I hissed.

"I'd rather not force a friendship with someone just because they're bored with their own life." She hissed back.

I frowned and turned the car back on, "Fine."

It wasn't until after I sped through the traffic of cars and buses on the road as I made my way back to my house that I felt my anger leaving my body. I mean, she was just a kid, and I was over two decades old. But... Still, she didn't have to reply as rudely as she did... Whatever.

I pulled into my parking lot and managed to get out of the car and half way to the front door before Jamie even got the car door open.

"Hurry up, it's hot." I murmured as I carried on. I wasn't looking at her, but she must have been frowning as she pulled her book bag over her shoulders and slammed my car door closed.

I should've been a lot more resistant with Liz, I can't take care of kids, especially kids that are so awkward and antisocial like her... It's just not what I do. Regardless, this kid is going to be under my care for the next few days until Liz gets back, so... Might as well just push through and force a smile.

It'll all be over soon, and then, I'll never have to see her grumpy face again!
