#28 "Too late for everything(?)"
My husband entered a messy love triangle. He loves a girl but that girl loves another man. I, who don't belong to that group and who don't like anyone, married my husband. How did it happen?
"Why are you here?" Joshua asked when I entered his room.
"Let's make a baby tonight."
"Are you crazy? Get lost."
I never had any feelings for him. It was all a business marriage when both companies will benefit. My husband and I are in our late 30's. Basically, it should be the time for me to bear a kid. My father also wanted to see his grandchildren as soon as possible so I am doing my best to have a s** with Joshua. It won't be an immoral thing since we're married. But my husband believes that he should only do it with the woman he loves. Apparently, he doesn't love me. However, in my age, I think that falling in love like how those teenagers do, is already too late.
"Maybe I should wear sexy outfit next time," I murmured as I left his room. Joshua even threw a pillow to my face just to force me to get out.
"Ding dong~"
Someone pressed the doorbell and when I checked the security screen, it was Bea, the woman my husband loves. So I didn't open the door and went back to my husband instead.
"What?" Joshua asked in irritated tone after I peeked inside for the second time. "I told you to stop bothering me, didn't I?"
"Bea is here," I said.
His expression has softened, like an ice that was melted in the desert. Joshua dashed out and opened the main door in panic. From the back, I watched them in silence.
"Why are you here?" Joshua asked to Bea who's crying so hard.
"He's a jerk. He is a jerk," Bea cried. My husband then hugged her with all his might.
"Shsssh. It's okay. I'm here."
This is... creepy. Well, it's not the first time I've witnessed this. Bea knows that there's no special relationship between my husband and me. And Joshua doesn't care about me at all, so do I.
I walked inside my room and collapsed on my bed. "They are so stupid," I mumbled.
I mean, if Joshua really loves her, he should marry Bea, not me. Also, that fox irritates me for some reason. She rejected Joshua but every time she got a problem with the guy she likes, she will go to Joshua, crying and begging for attention.
"Joshua is too stupid," that's my final conclusion. He let the girl go back and forth. What is she? A Yo-Yo?
Tomorrow morning, I woke up early to prepare for my work. When I was putting milk on my cereal bowl with heavy eyelids, I saw my husband sitting on the couch. Since when he was there? I didn't notice it before.
"(Y/n), let's talk," he said.
I brought my cereal and sat across him. "Drop it."
"I..." He met my gaze. "...wanted to be with Bea."
I nodded my head because that's the fact. "So?"
"After five months, let's divorce," he suggested.
I knew that this would happen soon. However, I am slightly disappointed that he'll go without getting me pregnant. Am I going to live alone? I want my own kid and raised him by myself.
"Okay," I said. "But can you give me a child before we separated?"
"HEY! YOU'RE REALLY CRAZY!" he gave me an ear-piercing shout.
So it's final... I'm gonna be alone forever.
After working so hard all day, I went to a bar to spend my money. Working and relaxing, it's just a cycle for me. You work, you pay, you work, you eat, you work, you fart... etc.
"It's been a long time ma'am," the bartender of the bar approached me. He's wiping those expensive looking glasses while smiling at me. I wonder where could I buy those glasses?
"Did you miss me?" I asked him then put ice on my tequila.
"Sort of?" he chuckled.
This guy is tall, handsome and...a player. Because this quiet night bar is my favorite hangout place, we tend to see each other here once a week. But to make it clear, he and I are just strangers with employee-customer relationship. Besides, I saw him flirt with other women before.
"Why? You broke up with your girlfriend again?" I asked.
"Girlfriend?"
"Every pretty customer is your girlfriend. You were flirting with everyone to be exact."
This guy whose name is a mystery has showed me his sweet smile. "I am getting embarrassed if you put it that way ma'am."
"No need. My husband brought his girl home while I'm present. But he never feels embarrassed."
"Ohhh. Your husband is a jerk."
"Look who's talking," I chuckled then sip again on my tequila.
"Ma'am, can I ask something very private?"
"Sure. But don't ask me about my age or weight."
"Of course I won't, lol. Girls hate those questions."
Girls? I'm in my late 30's and he called me a girl. He really knows how to woo a woman.
"So...." He started then placed his elbow on the counter table. Putting his chin at the back of his hand, he asked, "I've noticed this before. Ma'am, you don't wear your wedding ring."
My eyes went to my finger, then back to his handsome face. "My husband and I decided not to wear it."
Eyes widened, he flung another question, "Why?"
"We don't love each other so that's why. Rings are just symbol for couple's eternal love, but we don't. Actually, after five months, we'll get divorced."
This guy who maybe thinks I'm a pitiful person kept his mouth shut. And so I burst in laughing.
"I'm not sad at all. Well, I'm happy and sad at the same time," I shared. "I'm happy that I'll live alone again, watching my favorite movie and eats my breakfast alone. But I'm sad that I can't bear a child. It's my dream to be a good mother."
"So it isn't your dream to be a good wife?"
That question stopped me for a moment. He's right, I never dream of it since I always think that falling in love in this age is too late.
"Kring kring~" ringing phone mingled between our conversation. This bartender looked at his phone with apathetic expression, unlike his friendly aura before. "I'm sorry ma'am, I'll answer this first." Then he left.
Even when he's gone, I kept on thinking about that question. Why can't I dream of having someone I love by my side?
Filling my stomach with alcohol didn't get me drunk. I walked out from the bar with steady steps.
"Oh right, I can't drive because I drank," I murmured. I took a deep breath of the calm night. This is really refreshing~
"How many times should I tell you that I only see you as my little sister?!"
"You can't date me? But you dated a lot of women! How is it possible that I don't stand even a chance!?"
I heard loud voices from the side. There on my right, I saw familiar back of a man. The woman is much smaller than him so I didn't see her face.
"Please, stop this. Go back and..."
'Pak!' the girl slapped his face. Ooooooh~ That must be painful.
"Jerk," the woman murmured before she walked out.
Whether I'll stay or not, they don't care. This road was built for everyone so I stayed on my place. Slowly, the man turned around and that's how our gaze met. It's him... the bartender.
"Hey," I called.
"..."
"Want to drink together? But not here."
The two of us went for a drink somewhere in the street. Beers were cheaper since the place looks simple.
I watched him drink his beers in silence. Unlike before, the talkative bartender is furrowing his brows with pursed lips.
"Why don't you ask me?" his response suddenly returned. "About the thing you saw and heard before."
"I don't ask things like that. I only wait and listen," I answered.
Junhui chuckled, "ma'am, you're really cool."
"Of course. I'm cool because it's my treat tonight. You ordered a loooooooot of pork and beefs," Then I pointed these ton of heavy snacks on our table.
"Geez, then I'll pay instead," he pouted. So he knows how to act like a kid too? This is very surprising.
"No need. I'll choose to be a cool woman tonight. So eat a lot." I shook my head and sip on my beer.
"That woman... she likes me a lot," he shared so sudden. He was looking at the blank space as if he is reminiscing his old time. "But, she's only a little sister to me."
"Hmmm," I mumbled.
"Actually, he's my step sister."
'What a drama' I murmured only inside my head.
"But our parents already died which makes us unrelated anymore. She asked me to date her."
"Hmmm."
"But what should I do? I really can't see her as a woman."
"So you're dating a lot of women just because of her?"
"Exactly." He pointed me and took a sip on his beer.
"Playing the badboy role won't end this," I commented. "Your ex-stepsister knows that you're doing that in purpose. So she won't stop."
I heard him sigh before he set his eyes on me again. "Then, what should I do?"
It's funny. But the answer that sink in my head is a belief that I don't believe. "Love."
"Huh?"
"Fall in love. How old are you?"
"32."
He's older than me.
"Then fall in love and date for real."
"Isn't it too late?" he asked.
"It's not late for everything."
I always said that falling in love in this age is too late. But here I am, saying the opposite things to others. How hypocrite.
"Well, actually, there's a girl I'm so interested," he whispered in shy tone.
"Ahuh. Then go for it."
"Really?"
"Yup."
"Okay!" He tapped the table and smiled with confidence. "Later, I'll go for her."
"Huh? Later? Why not now? Don't waste your time and go for it now."
"No no no," he chuckled. He grabbed his beer. "That's too immoral."
"What do you mean immoral?"
"I have to wait for five months," he said huskily, drinking his beer while looking straight to me.
I felt the chills on my skin as I received those piercing gaze which might mean something.
"She'll divorce her husband after five months. So I have to wait," he whispered. Blushing, he placed his chin at the back of his hand without avoiding my gaze.
I shouldn't have a drink with him. But now...it's too late.
