#15 "Midnight Call" (one shot story)
Every 12am, I heard the telephone rings from the living room. "Kring! Kring!" It woke me up from my deepest sleep and made me wonder who's in the right mind who will call at this hour.
Me and my two siblings are on a vacation in grandma Gee's cabin. We aren't blood related with grandma but she's mom's friend since a long time ago.
"Chan! Chan! Wake up!" I gently rocked my little brother.
Chan woke up while grunting, "what?"
"I told you, the phone is ringing," I whispered just in case we wake up grandma Gee who's sleeping at the next room.
"Kring! Kring!" The phone rings. However...
"What are you saying? I don't hear any sounds," Chan sighed and shove back his face on the pillow.
We've been here for a week but weirdly, I was the only one who can hear the phone rings every midnight. Are they deaf or my hearing ability is just strong?
"Kring! Kring!"
No. There's no way they won't hear this.
Finally, I took the courage to get up and check the mystery behind the ringing phone. My heart was pounding when I dragged my feet on the way to the living room. When I got there, it was too dark.
"Kring! Kring!"
I am not a fan of horror movies. If there's a commercial about a horror film that will soon play in the cinema, I always covered my ears, closed my eyes or asked the one who's holding the remote to change the channel. I was really afraid of saving the image of a ghost in my mind then imagining it would appear inside the bathroom; standing behind me or sitting at the toilet bowl.
"C-Calm down (Y/n). It j-just a phone," I whispered to myself as I groped for the switch and turned the light on.
"Kring! Kring!"
The surrounding was really quiet. Maybe because we are at the country side, I could clearly hear the sounds coming from night insects and the pounding of my heart: 'Dug dug dug'
My hand held the telephone. Gulping twice in a row, I placed it on my ear. "H-Hello?"
Nothing. I hear nothing from the other line.
"Hello?" I repeated and I swear I'll put it down if there's no response again.
[Call 911! Call 911!]
The call ended with a long tuuuuuuuut.
What was that?
I tried to call the same number but it isn't available anymore. At first I thought it's an emergency, but I guess it could be a prank. Tsss. People nowadays.
After placing the phone back, I turned around while yawning.
"Hello," said by a man who's standing behind me.
"Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"
I felt my heart came out from my chest and my lungs explode its air! My body weakened, trembling on the ground.
"What happen?!" I could hear Chan's voice coming here. "What what?!" Voices came one after another.
"A ghost! I saw a ghost!" I screamed, covering my face with both hands.
"Where?! Oh my god! Where?!" Unfamiliar voice of a man that I think I heard just a moment ago.
By the moment I put my hands down, I saw the ghost panicking while looking left to right, right to left, north to south, and south to me. Then, our eyes met. 'So he's not a ghost.'
"Who a-are you?!" Chan asked him while I saw my brother Jihoon behind the guy with a frying pan on his hand. Jihoon is ready to hit his head! Wait!
"My grandson! You're here!" Grandma Gee came at the scene just in the right time.
"Grandma, the girl said she saw a ghost. I told you to leave this place before," the guy complained.
"You saw a ghost dear?" Grandma asked with worried face.
At the top of my lungs, I breathed out. "N-No grandma. I thought him as a ghost. S-Sorry."
Chan and Jihoon grunted, I swear its not a good sign. On the other side, grandma and his grandson laughed in this absurdness.
"Wow. Sorry for surprising you like that," the guy apologized then he offered his hand so he could pull me up from the carpet.
My eyes stared from his hand towards his face. He has those brown eyes, long eyelashes, small pointed nose and thin lips. He looks like a Hollywood star, someone that's suited for acting the male role where the guy hugs his girl from behind, enjoying the breeze from the Titanic Ship.
"Here, take my hand," his offer that sounds oh so sweet to my ear.
Tucking my hair, I was about to grab his hand. But Jihoon pulled me up instead. "Stop playing hard to get. What an eyesore," he complained.
What a scene breaker!
I pushed his hand away as soon as I stood up. But my expression soothed when I stared back at this handsome guy. Who is this Prince, I wonder.
"This is my grandson, Vernon," grandma Gee introduced.
"Nice to meet you. Grandma told me a lot about you guys. Thank you for taking care of her while you're in vacation," he said with a beam.
The spring will definitely different this year.
Vernon became close, not only with me but also with my other two brothers. He's very friendly and well-mannered. We enjoyed the vacation together with grandma Gee.
About the mysterious phone call every midnight at my first week here, it never happened again.
"Where's Chan and Jihoon?" Vernon asked before sitting beside me in the couch.
I was listening to Frank Sinatra "Fly me to the moon" and so I put my earphones down cause it isn't polite to talk with it on.
"They went to buy foods at the market," I replied.
Vernon suddenly snatched one of my earphone and put it on his ear. "Ahhh," he mumbled. "Hmmm? Fly me to the moon?" He looked at me with a sweet smile. "Sweet. I also love this song."
His visual attacked me in the moment I never expect it would. It took me seconds before I realized that I've been wordlessly staring at his face.
"Let's listen to it together, shall we?" I never thought his voice to be this husky, or maybe my mind just playing with me since he's very attracted to my eyes.
My cheeks are burning when I felt his palm brushes on skin. Vernon put the other earphone back to my ear and then tucked my hair.
Staring at me in close gap, I saw my reflection through his brown eyes as dark as chocolate. If I don't care about my reputation, I might already pulled his nape and kiss his lips. But don't worry because I still respect myself.
'Good girl (Y/n). Good girl.'
Vernon laid his back against the couch, sitting straight beside me.
[Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars]
I looked above the ceiling.
[Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars]
Vernon breathed deeply, I could hear it.
[In other words, hold my hand]
Vernon looked into my hands on my lap.
[In other words, darling kiss me]
We stared at each other.
"..."
"..."
As if we both have the same idea, we put our earphones down. I tilted my head on the other side while fanning myself with my hands. That's when the telephone caught my eyes.
"When I first came here," I changed the topic. "I've always heard this phone ringing every midnight."
"Oh?" Vernon gasped. "Same goes with me. My first week here after coming home from New York, I heard the ringing at 12am."
My hair in my skin suddenly marched up.
"How about now?" I flung a question.
Vernon shook his head. "When I decided to pick up the call, it stopped right there. Well it happened a long time ago, even before I've met you. It was a scary story of my childhood and I remembered begging grandma to move out of this house. But now, I just laughed at it."
It's amusing how the young version of him, took the courage to answer the call at 12am. I don't think I can do that if I'm in his shoes.
"The night I picked it up, I heard some voices. Saying: 911! 911! Then the call ended. I thought it just a prank."
"Really? It was different from me."
"What did you hear from the other line?"
"I hears a faint sound of woman's voice. It was: 'Help. Help'. Something like that. Then I answered: Hello? Are you okay miss? I'll wake up my grandma to help you. But then, the call ended. It never happened again after that."
Weird. If we had the same person who called that night, what's her reason to do this? Was that really just a prank?
"Anyway, your school will start next next week right?" He blurted.
"Huh? Ah yeah." I looked down in grimace. It was really sad that we will be apart after this vacation.
"Hmmm. Send me your school address. I'll visit you."
I cocked at him, eyes widened. "Huh? W-Why? You'll visit my brothers?"
"Eh?" He chuckled. Biting his lower lip, Vernon continued with shyly tone, "I said I will visit you, dummy." Staring back to my eyes, he left me speechless. "If you ever allow me to be your boyfriend, I don't see any problem with it."
Our relationship started once upon a spring vacation.
Vernon and I dated each other for 10 years until we got married in the age of 26. We live happily with each other, as if nothing could break us apart.
"Honey, I love to visit grandma Gee this weekend," I suggested.
Vernon, my husband, is in charge of the wheel. "Sure. I would love to see grandma too."
I held his other hand and he glanced at me with a smile.
"I love you Vernon," I said.
"I love you more," he replied.
We both looked ahead of the road. There was a big truck on the other lane.
"The truck... Is unstable," Vernon noticed with a frown.
"Honey, let's..." I was about to suggest that we should stop the car at the side since I was afraid that the truck's driver is drunk. But it was too late.
"Shhhhhhhhngkkl!"
"Damn!" Vernon shouted as he tried to avoid the truck which suddenly changed its lane and dashed to us.
Flashing lights. Pain. Numbness.
When I slowly opened my eyes, I'm already at the ground.
"V-Vernon..."
My vision isn't clear. I closed my eyes again and breathed heavily. My chest tightened. Every time I breathe, I felt my bone breaking apart. Forcing my eyes to open again, I saw Vernon's phone beside me.
I reached it hardly with my bloody hands.
When I got, I pressed the call button. I don't know who was the person I'm calling but one thing is on my mind.
"Kring kring!"
[Hello?] A kid's voice.
"Help, help," I begged.
[Hello? Are you okay miss? I'll wake up my grandma to help you.]
I couldn't utter any words to say. And before everything went black, I heard people shouting around: "Call 911! Call 911!"
The midnight call flashed back into my mind.
The end...
