#105 "Old Phone" (One shot story)

On my way to the chicken and beer restaurant to meet my friend, I picked up an old cellphone. There was no information inside of it, even any contact numbers to reach, so I didn't had the chance to find the owner. With the thought that someone threw it away already, I decided to keep it. After many years, I forgot it's existence.

"What are you doing?" My husband, Mingyu, asked. He found me in the attic and strode inside with curious face.

"My friend invited me to play table tennis with her. So I'm looking for my table tennis racket," I answered while wiping the thick dust on the top of the box. When dust particles reached my nose, I sneezed...

"Do you want me to help..."

...well, almost. Because he suddenly talked to me, my sneeze stopped in the middle; and it was damn painful!

"I hate you!"

My husband's eyes went round. "W-What did I do?" He even pointed himself, blinking swiftly.

I wrinkled my nose and opened the box with a pout on my lips. Feeling apologetic, my husband took courage of hugging me from behind. He didn't know what he did but he said, "Sorry."

I guess, that is his charm. He's very humble and sweet. Even if he's tall like a giant, he acted like a small puppy in front of his owner. Getting mad over my unfinished sneeze isn't really a big deal so I reassured him with a chuckle.

"Alright, alright, now stop hugging me. It's hot." I tried to push him away but he tightened his grip around my waist. He poked me with his chin, shoving his face next to my ear.

"What hot?" he whispered.

"It's hot inside the attic," I answered, rolling my eyes. Mingyu didn't budge and kept breathing heavily beside me. I think he's doing this on purpose to get me...you know... aroused. However, I just took a bath and not really in the mood to it. So I decided to push my husband away after facing him. I put extra strength to my arms, but when I was about to succeed, his lips conquered mine.

"Hmmmf!"

I kept my eyes half open, sneaking a glare at him every time he nibbled my lips. It wasn't our first kiss, but he has the power to weaken my knees as I felt his warmth.

"Ming..." He didn't even allow me to shout my protests. Cupping my cheeks, his huge frame leaned on me as my butt was pressed against the box behind. My body tingled every time he shove his tongue in the seam of my lips, toes are curling.

"Ahhhh~" a moan vibrated inside throat. He pulled back to catch some air then claimed me again with hungry and intense kisses, until I could feel the throbbing pain in my lower abdomen.

'Ohhhh he's really driving me crazy~'

By the second I became aware of his fingers, they had already slipped under my shirt. They radiate heat every time he caresses the curve of my waist. "Ahhh," erotic sounds slipped from my opened mouth. He took it as invitation to go further, sucking my tongue while his knee positioned at the center of thighs.

If I let this continue, I knew I'll be raising a white flag soon. Fortunately, he accidentally bumped something behind me and we fell down on the floor.

'Bam!'

It followed with our groans.

"Ouch~"

Sitting on the floor while wincing on pain, we looked at each other then laughed at his clumsiness.

"I'm sorry," he apologized. Because of this, I was able to calm down. Phew~

But it's not the case for my husband. He reached my nape and leaned closer for another round. Thanks to the messy stuffs on the floor, I had an excuse to stop him.

"Oh! Look at the mess!" I yelled.

I could see his pout from my peripheral vision, but I decided to ignore it. Among the things I found on the floor is the old cellphone that I picked up years ago.

"Mingyu, do you remember this?" I showed the phone on my hand.

Still sulking, he answered in low tone, "Uhuh."

"I picked this up during our graduation party with our friends," I excitedly reminded him of our past.

He shrugged his shoulder then put his weight backward, using his two hands to support his body. "It was the cellphone you used to smack my head when I snatched a kiss when I was drunk."

I laughed at his vivid memory.

"It sure it is. Thanks to this we became a couple."

"Yeah yeah," bored, he answered. "You hit me too hard that I need to go to the hospital. Then because you were guilty, you stayed with me all night while crying."

'On the second thought, talking about that past isn't really that great.' Having this idea, I changed the topic.

"I took a lot of pictures using this during our party. I wanna see them right now!" I stood up.

"Huh?! W-Wait!" Mingyu also stood up. "You mean, you'll leave me here and walk out just to charge that thing? Why?! When we were having so much fun! Oh come on!" He stomped his feet like little kid. "We can't stop with just a kiss. Let's continue."

Before he could lock me between his thick arms, I already flee.

"Hey!" his shouting voice faded as I hopped down of the attic.

In instant, I arrived in our bedroom. I looked for the right charger and when I found one, I celebrated in silence. As I plugged it on the power source, Mingyu came in.

"So you wanted to do it on bed. Great choice, great choice." He sat beside me. My husband leaned closer to peck on my neck but I shove his face away.

"Ahh! Leave me alone!" I complained while opening the power button of the phone. To my surprise, it went on. "It's on!" I exclaimed.

"Yes, I'm turned on," my husband mumbled on the side, glaring at me.

I ignored him for the second time and explore on the phone's gallery. It was really old so I have to wait till the document appear on the small rectangular screen. My husband who wasn't interested at first, is now waiting along with me. "It's really working? Wow," he gasped.

Finally, the pictures I took years ago have appeared.

"Look! This is...!"

I stopped. I wanted to show him the picture while saying: this is the picture of our friends but something is odd. Back in that day, all of us were only wearing our winter clothes. But in this picture, we are...

"What the hell!" Mingyu cursed as he snatched the phone away from me. His brows narrowed while looking intently at the pictures.

'W-What is this? The people inside the picture were us but...'

"Why are we wearing different clothes?" my husband asked.

Hoshi is wearing a black suit while his wife, Hranghe, is wearing a wedding gown. Dokyeom is in chef clothes while Wonwoo wears pilot uniform. Mingyu, my husband, is in his police attire. And me, I'm wearing the apron I had this morning.

With goosebumps on my skin, I met my husband's confused gaze. We were holding our breaths as we take a look at the other picture in the gallery. The next picture has the two of us, smiling together with wedding ring on our fingers.

"Sh*t," Mingyu murmured. He dropped the phone with his trembling hand that has ring on it.

The picture showed what is happening in our present. That's how we found out that the cellphone I picked up has the power to picture the future.

The next morning, my husband and I went out to meet our old friends, Hoshi and Hranghae. They just got married last year.

"Oh, do you remember then place we used to hang out during college?" Hranghae asked.

"Ah! The chicken and beer restaurant!" Hoshi answered.

When we heard about it, Mingyu and I glanced nervously at each other. We are really curious if the cellphone is a real deal. But were anxious to tell this to anybody because they might think we're crazy.

"It's still there. So I thought of inviting our other friends next month. What do you think?" Hranghae suggested.

The juice on my glass shook as I placed it on the table. "T-That's cool."

"The last time we went there was during our graduation party? Right?" Hoshi added. "It was the time when Hranghae confessed her feelings for me."

Blushing, Hranghae punched her husband's arm. "Shut up!"

'That's right. The two weren't a couple that time. But the picture on the cellphone has an image of them wearing wedding clothes. Then, that means it indeed foretell their future.'

"Hey," I called them in serious voice. When they noticed my expression, the cocked me with the same gaze. "Can you believe it if..."

Mingyu held my leg under the table, as if he's asking me to stop whatever I was about to spout. Next, he spoke, "I have a friend," he started.

Hoshi and Hranghae peeked at each other's curious eyes. Then they diverted back to Mingyu.

"My friend has this crazy story about pictures," my husband continued.

"Crazier than my husband?" Hranghae teased.

"Hey!" Hoshi sulked.

"Well," Mingyu chuckled, scratching his temple. "Ahmmm, my friend took a picture of his other friends four years ago."

"Then?" Hoshi leaned closer, quite immersed.

"He and his friends were just college that time. However, when he looked at the picture again..."

"..."

"..."

"He and friend's appearance have changed."

"OMG!" Hranghae and Hoshi gasped while holding each other. Their face went pale, as if they saw ghost. "Is this just another horror story you've read somewhere?!" catching his breath, Hoshi asked.

Maybe, this is the reason why my husband stopped me from talking. He knew that no one will believe me unless I show the cellphone. Actually, we did try to show this to another person. But whenever we did, the cellphone won't open. As if we're the only one who is allowed to see the pictures.

"It's hard to believe, right?" Mingyu forged a laugh.

"No," Hranghae disagreed. "It makes sense."

She brought up our hopes with anticipation. 'Will someone really can believe this?!'

"I heard a weird stuff from my other friend," she shared. I gulped while waiting for her next words. "My friend said that her cousin bought an old phone from an antique store. Then suddenly, her cousin kept on saying that her phone can capture the future. Of course, no one believed her. Until they admitted her in mental hospital. I don't know what happened to her cousin after that.

With loud beating of my heart, Mingyu and I looked at each other again. Maybe, we were thinking the same thing.

'Is the phone I picked up is the phone that was bought from the antique store?'

"Can you tell me where is the antique store is?" This time, it's me who flung a question. "We will recommend this to our friend."

Hranghae contacted his other friend. When she got the address of the antique store, Mingyu and I visited it together. There's a vintage welcome sign on the glass doow. As we walked inside, the chime bells rang. The tick of a grandfather clock rang on our ears, sending shivers to my back. Then we passed through narrowed aisles with table displays on both side. The sunlight is glimmering off towards the carved frames hanging on the wall.

Mingyu and I looked carefully at the worn out mirrors which seemed to survive after decades, then at the silverware, jadeite, antique guitars, depression glasses, antique photographs perfume bottles and canning jars.

I always find antique store feels mysterious and eerie. And no one can change my mind.

"Excuse me," Mingyu called. From the counter we saw an old man with winter-white hair, milky watery eyes, wrinkled skin and a goatee beard. He has huge tummy as he walked unsteady to greet us.

"Hello there, what are you looking for?" he asked in throaty voice. With his hand behind his crooked back, he gave us a friendly smile.

"Good day, sir," I called. Slowly, I showed him the cellphone on my hand. "I heard that someone bought an old phone in this store. So may I ask if this phone looks familiar to you?"

The old man's eyes widened then subsided. "Ohh, I know this phone." He grabbed it and examined. "A young girl bought this from a long time ago. I said this thing doesn't work anymore but she still bought it."

"My wife picked it up somewhere. When we opened it, it's working," Mingyu informed.

"Really?" The old man gasped. He once looked at the phone again then murmured, "Then it might be real." He tried to open the phone but just like we expected, it didn't open. "They said this phone only open in the hand of it's owner. I didn't believe this at first."

'Owner? Does it mean... it only works with us because Mingyu and I are the new owner?'

"If this works with the two of you, then you two are indeed the new owners," the old man continued, as if he can read my mind.

"It's really creepy," I heard my husband sighed. "Can we just give it back to you? Sir?"

The antique store owner heaved a sigh. "Are you sure?" he asked.

We sent signal to each other, then nodded at the same time.

Even it has power to tell us the future, we don't want to own something as scary as this.

And so after we disposed the phone back to the antique store, we decided to go home with ease minds.

"That's crazy? Right?" Mingyu said while driving.

I looked at him from the passenger seat and smiled faintly. "I shouldn't pick it up from the start."

"Even though we ended up together because of it, I'm glad we sent it away."

"We'll keep this a secret from everyone, right?"

"Of course!" Mingyu exclaimed. "They'll think we're insane."

While nodding my head, my phone rang inside my pocket. So I picked it up and received Hranghae's call. "Hello?"

[Hey! I got it!]

"What?" Mingyu mouthed when he saw my enigmatic expression. I turned on the loud speaker mode for him to hear Hranghae's call.

[Remember my friend's cousin who was admitted to mental hospital?] she continued.

"Yes?" I answered.

Mingyu made a Uturn toward the next lane.

[She died in the hospital.]

"..."

"..."

[Her cousin died.]

'Ring ring ring~'

Loud thin rings echoed inside the car. In front of Mingyu and I appeared the old phone we already disposed a moment ago.

'Ring ring ring~'

[Hello? Hey, are you there?]

I slowly put the my own phone while looking at the old phone that kept of ringing.

"H-How... How did that..." Mingyu's unfinished remark while driving.

My body gets tighter and tighter. The air in my lungs kept deflating as I reached the ringing old phone.

"Don't touch it!" Mingyu warned. We can't park the car since we're in the long empty highway.

But it's too late. It's already on my hand. I anxiously looked at him before I opened the screen. The call from an empty number was gone. Instead, the front camera went opened.

"Sh*t," Mingyu commented on the side.

When I raised the phone, we heard a shutter sound.

Click.

The phone automatically took a picture of us.

"D-Did you take a picture of us?!" Mingyu asked, trembling.

"No. I don't," I answered, holding my breath.

"Then why did..." He snatched the phone from my hand and checked the gallery.

We both saw our picture.

The picture of us...covered with blood.

'Eingggk!'

In the long straight road, a huge sign board fell down exactly at our car.

Bam!

I hardly opened my heavy eyes and saw the phone in the ground covered with our blood. I saw it turned off on it's own.

In the verge of death, I realized something: Maybe, the phone can really guess the future. But it only choose the people who are going to die in their future. And today was our turn.

Now that the new owners died, it is the time to find the new one.

'Ring~'

It opened.

The phone found the new owner.

Are you ready to see the future?

Because tonight... it's your turn.

------

The end.
