#08 "Second Betrayal" part 2
On March 1, 1919, Myungho and his two friends had founded the Korean independence movement which was against the Japanese colonization that time.
"No matter what happened," Myungho said. "We will never betray our country." Together with Junhui and (Y/n), they have pledge to that promise.
March 10, 1922, the three went to the boisterous market to buy some foods. Walking alone, Myungho met three Japanese soldiers in front of the fruit stands. They were holding two black and white pictures of Junhui and (Y/n)!
"Korera no hitobito o mita koto ga arimasu ka? (Have you seen these two?)" The Japanese asked him.
At that moment, the two were walking from a great distance within Myungho's sight. If he wanted to save them, he can just shout anything so they should escape beforehand. But an inevitable scenario, he, the Independence's leader will get caught.
And so he clenched his fists as he stayed silent until one of the soldiers saw them from behind.
"Watashi wa karera o mitsuketa! (I saw them!)"
Junhui and (Y/n) met their gazes: the soldiers' eyes and their leader's guilty stare. They knew they'll be caught but the two were happy that Myungho chose the country over them.
Crying as Myungho turned around while they ran away, he made a wish: "If I was born again, I wish I won't need to betray my friend and the woman I love for the sake of anything."
Year of 2022 came. A man named Minghao is sitting in front of his office desk. It's already 8pm but he never showed any signs of leaving his chair.
"Dude, aren't you going home?" His co-worker asked.
"Hmmm. I need to finish this report tonight."
"Geez. That's too much bro. You should laid back sometimes."
"That's why the company sucks. Employees should dedicated their all so we could profit together."
"There is no perfect company, Mr. Upright."
"You're distracting me. If you'll go, just go."
"I will, I will." Before his co-worker left, he saw the red mark on Minghao's calendar. "Oh shoot! Dude! Did you forget the occasion today?"
Minghao stopped typing on his laptop. "What?"
"Today is your couple anniversary with (Y/n). You forgot it again, just like last year."
Minghao's eyes widened but then subsided. "Damn," he sighed. "I'll call her later." Grasping his hair, he leaned his back.
"Call her later and what? Apologize that you forgot today's occasion? If I am (Y/N), I already broke up with you from a very long time ago."
"Shut up." Minghao glared at him. "(Y/n) loves me."
"As much as you love your job? Stop being so confident, Minghao. Women need attention. There's no lying back when it comes to love because the moment you did, it's the end."
Xu Minghao is a 25 year-old wealthy guy who is very dedicated on his work. He never admitted that he prioritizes his job over his girlfriend when everyone around him was convinced that he is; including (Y/n). How could someone compete with a job? That's nonsense, especially when you're in love.
Because of the forgotten anniversary incident, Minghao and (Y/n) had a quarrel. A week of no exchanging contacts passed. When his head finally cooled down, Minghao realized that he should sincerely apologize for his shortcomings. He went to her, waiting in front of the apartment building while standing under the streetlamps.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say those mean things to you. I was tired and..." Minghao sighed as he practiced his apology speech.
The sky is a pitch of black. Even the bird which was standing above the streetlamp might memorize Minghao's speech by now because he's been standing there for exactly two hours; saying same things again and again.
"What's taking her so long?" he complained as he looked at his wrist watch. Looking not once but twice on his right side, a smile drew on his lips when he saw his girlfriend from afar. However...
"I enjoyed it," (Y/n) said to the man who walked with her on the way to the apartment building.
MInghao's smile gradually faded. He stared at that other man; how tall he is, how handsome he is and how he has that gorgeous beam on his lips. Even though Minghao couldn't hear their conversation clearly, he has hunch inside his head which made his hand clutched on the bouquet of flowers he's holding.
"I see. It's late, you should go in," the man named Jun, told her carefully.
"Sure. Thanks again. Bye."
The two separated with smiles on their face. Minghao saw everything. What will he gonna do?
"No," Minghao mumbled while looking at the ground. "He's just a friend. (Y/n) loves me. She won't cheat."
After few minutes of staying at his spot without moving an inch, Minghao finally stepped forward. He went inside the building. Before he'll press the doorbell, he first took a deep breath. And then, he pressed it, which he rarely does because he already knows the passcode lock door of his girlfriend.
(Y/n) who knows her guest for tonight has opened the door with grimace. "This is really surprising," she chuckled before meeting his gaze.
"I'm sorry. Here." Minghao offered the bouquet of flower he was holding.
Rolling her eyes as if she found this very upsetting, she retorted, "You left me alone inside the restaurant without paying our meals. You didn't text me after that. Then now you'll show with a flower on your hand? What are you? A boss?"
"You won't accept my apology?" Minghao said in irritated tone. "Why? You don't love me anymore?"
That question hit her somehow. Of course... she still loves him. She does.
"Are you even sincere with your apology?" She asked. (Y/n) turned around and went inside. Minghao then followed her on the way to the living room.
They both sat at the couch, staring at blank space. True, the awkwardness after a huge quarrel made them uncomfortable. It feels like walking barefoot on a thin thread that connects a broken bridge.
"I said, I'm sorry. Why can't you accept it?" Minghao broke the ice.
"This is not how you say sorry Minghao. You're selfish."
"Then what about you?"
The two looked at each other.
"Why do you keep on pushing me away?" Minghao added.
"I did not. You left me that night. Remember?"
"Then accept my apology. Let's make up."
"But I'm still mad, what to do?"
"Then lower your pride."
"This is not about my pride Minghao!" (Y/n) stood up, massaging her temple. "This won't do. Just go. We will just fight again."
"You don't love me anymore?"
She tilted her head with stern expression. "What?"
"Why can't you reply? I've asked this twice." He put down the bouquet on the side while looking straight at her shaking pupil.
"I love you," she muttered.
"Then prove it."
"Huh?"
MInghao pulled her wrist and pinned her down on the couch.
"Wait. Minghao I..." she protested. Minghao cut her words by forcing a kiss on her lips. "H-Hao..." He held her wrists tightly as he pulled back. He then kissed her neck, sucking it a little. "Minghao!" she shouted. With full force he escaped his grips, pushed him away and slapped his cheek really hard.
The world seemed to stop for both of them. (Y/n) was in a verge of crying, while Minghao clenched his fists in anger.
"Is this how you'll prove it?" (Y/n) sobbed.
Avoiding her gaze, Minghao remained silent. The tears in his eyes are also about to fall down but he's holding it back.
"If you won't go, then I will." (Y/n) stood up and dashed out of her own apartment.
She went outside the building while crying so hard. That's how someone from the entrance saw her.
"I came back to give your power ban..." Jun stopped when she saw her crying.
"He's a jerk," she complained while wailing. "But I still love him. What should I do? Really..." She sat on the ground, hiding her face between her knees.
Jun who doesn't have any idea what the hell just happened, he knelt down to sooth her back.
"(Y/n) I'm so sor..." Minghao came running, but halted when he saw the two. He is now standing behind her back, exchanging stare with Jun.
In their past lives, Minghao betrayed his friends for the country, Jun betrayed Minghao for the sake of love, and (Y/n) betrayed Jun by killing herself. After many years, the three met again in the starting line where betraying was their bid. Who will betray this time?
