#26 "365"
You don’t have any friends at all. Overlooked by almost everyone, you are almost invisible in the classroom. You look like a robot that is expressionless with no signs of feelings.
“Hey Lee Chan. Come over to my house. Let’s play tekken and order some pizza.”
“Right bro. You’ve been absent for two days. We missed you so much.”
“What happened anyway? The Lee Chan I know was a busy body.”
“Right. Why were you absent?”
“Punk we missed you.”
Lee Chan, the class president. He gets love by all the people surrounded around him, unlike you. Maybe because he is handsome, talented, approachable, smart and always smiling as if he got all of the fortune in the world; good family, friends and great achievements. Everyone loves those smiles he wears, but it is also the main reason of your jealousy. You hate him. So bad that you wish he doesn’t exist.
“Hi (y/n). Teacher said you didn’t send your essay notes. So he asked me to get it,” Lee Chan said while smiling in front of you.
When you turned at last to face him, he saw your eyes; narrowed, rigid, cold and hard. At this moment, Chan knows there is a tenseness you aren’t even trying to mask. He backed away, scratching his nape after a sigh. “S-Seems like you are not in the mood, hehe. You can put the notes on my desk later. Yeah later.”
“Hey, (y/n) glared at Lee Chan.”
“I saw it.”
“What a bitch. Who does she thinks she is?”
“Right. Our class president is really kind. He always approached her in friendly way.”
“Whatever. Let’s change the topic. Talking about (y/n) itself is so creepy.”
You heard some of your girl classmates murmuring and speaking rashly about you. It happens everyday so why bother?
~ding dong ding dong~
Finally, the class is over.
You got your bag and about to go out but someone grabbed your wrist. When you looked back, you saw him, Lee Chan. “You forgot something,” he reminded.
“Yah Lee Chan, are you coming with us?” One of his friend called him.
“A-Ah yes! Go first. I’ll follow you guys after this!” he replied, still holding your hand. It annoys you.
“Okay. Be quick!”
And then, all of your classmates left the classroom, leaving you and the person you hate the most.
“Let go,” you said.
“Huh?”
“I said let go of my hand.”
He tends at his grip and pulled his hand back. “Oh. Sorry.”
“What do you want?” You asked, then avoided his gaze.
“Ah. Remember when I asked you to give your essay notes? You still didn’t hand it to me.”
“I left it at home.”
“Ahh really? Okay okay. Then please hand it to me tomorrow.”
“Can I hand it personally to our teacher?” Once again, you looked at his face.
“W-Why? I am the class president though and it is my job,” he said, smiling.
“Your smile.”
“My smile?”
“It is annoying.”
“Huh?” His smile faded as he pointed himself.
“Lee Chan.”
“Y-Yeah?”
“I hate you. I hate you so don’t talk to me. Please.” You started to walk away. But he grabbed your wrist again.
“Why? Why do you hate me?” He slowly tends his serious eyes on you. “I believe, I never offended you before. So why?”
You took a deep breath. “I don’t want to explain it. So let go of my hand.”
“I need to know. Actually, I don’t like it when there is even one person who hates me. So why? Tell me why.”
You yanked his hand away. “Fine. Lee Chan, the reason I hate you is because… because…”
“Because?”
“Because I am jealous.”
“Huh? Jealous of what?!” he gasped.
“You have a good family and friends. You excelled always, both in academics and performances. Everyone loves you, adores you and treats you as if you are their God. It irritates me. It irritates me that you almost look so perfect.”
Lee Chan scratched his nape and chuckled. “I am not perfect. I have a lot of flaws.”
“Also, that smile.” You pointed your finger to his smiling lips. “I criticized you but you are still smiling? Seriously, what’s wrong with you? You think you are a saint? Don’t smile. The world is not that good for you to always smile.” You turned your back against him and about to leave.
“I have one year left.” His serious statement halted you from escaping.
You looked back and saw that serious expression you never seen before.
“This is a secret,” he said. “But after a year, I am going to die. There are only 365 days left for me. So I want those 365 days to fill with laughter. I want happy memories. That’s why, I smile.”
Who said he got everything? No he doesn’t. Because his life will end before you graduate high school together. So who are you to get jealous? Who are you to hate him? And who are you to stop him from smiling?
