#147 "Birds"

10 dollars per hour, 130 dollars per day, 3900 dollars per month. It's been half a year since I got a job worth 3900 dollars per month. My job is simple; taking care of a man on his 20's that got locked inside his room.

His name is Wen Junhui. Despite of his good appearance, his life is full of mystery. Some says he is insane, some says he killed a man before and some says he is afraid to face people outside. For 180 days, I never saw any expression in his face except for his blank reaction. He never laugh, smile, frown or even be in pain. Never heard of his voice, but only his deep breathing. Junhui is like a mannequin, trapped inside his room, and I am the only who cleaned him, feed him and changed his clothes.

It must be weird, for a healthy girl like me, to saw him naked. But even though he wear the most handsome face of a guy I ever see, I never consider him as a man. Besides, before I signed the contract, the head master told me that I should never get involved to this man life. "Don't talk to him", "Don't stare on his eye", "Don't ask", "Don't see him as a man", "Treat him like he is not even living."

For 3900 dollars, I endured those 180 days living and taking care of this poor man.

I entered his room, handling a tray of food on my hands. Junhui is sitting above his bed, staring at the blank space.

Letting a sigh while I dragged my feet on the ground, 3 sounds echoed around: my steps, my sighs and his breathing.

"Master Junhui, time to eat your dinner," I said as a usual routine. But he never responded, not even once. I sat beside him and prepare the food. "Say ahhh," I offered a spoonfull of porridge.

Junhui normally opened his mouth and accepted the food before. But tonight... a sudden changes came to my life.

Junhui looked at me, eye to eye!

My brain had shut down. I was clammy and there was the glisten of a cold sweat. My eyes were as wide as if someone was coming to deliver the fatal blow. Yet what I saw, no-one else could see.

"Do you want to hear a story?" he asked, his face is expressionless with no sign of feelings.

This is the first time I heard those brittle voice of his, making my lips turned blue in this crazy summer heat.

My mouth moves as if some strong force is controlling me remotely. "Y-Yes."

He leaned closer, not breaking his gaze on me. "Once upon a time, there was a Mama bird who has three baby birds. The Mama bird always brings food only for her two babies. The 3rd baby left alone. Two babies teased him: It is because Mama doesn't love you! 3 days had passed. The next morning, the two baby birds died. What do you think is the reason of their death?"

I breathed in and out but air wouldn't enter my lungs. Starved for air, my heart raced at tremendous speeds, and my lungs shallowly rose and fell in time. Finally, I got the courage to answered back, "It is because, the 3rd baby bird killed them? Because he was jealous. And if the two birds gone, his Mama will feed him. R-Right?"

Junhui frowned, before he let out a scary laugh, "Hahahahahaha! Final answer?"

"Y-Yeah."

His smiles faded away. When I looked down, I saw his white knuckles from clenching his fist too hard. He gritted his teeth from effort to remain silent and his hunched form exuded an animosity that was like acid - burning, slicing, potent. HIs face was red with suppressed rage!

"Why do all of you think that I killed them?!" he shouted before pressing my shoulder too hard.

My eyes enlarged and the hairs on the nape of my neck bristled. A gaggle of goose frickles laminated my frigid, naked skin. I tried to scream, but the inside of my mouth lacked any moisture and a croak was all that issued from my gape.

"Ahhh, i-it hurts!" I winced in pain.

"I didn't kill them! I didn't kill them! Mom killed them! Mom did!" he shouted while pinning me against the headboard.

I put my trembling hands to his arms, trying to free myself from him. "Junhui it hurts!" But...

"Believe me. I didn't kill them. I didn't. Can you believe me?" he sobbed. The anger turned into a vain. Tears fell down from his eyes, begging for sympathy, for love and understanding.

"I..... I believe in you," I said while looking at his eyes.

A moment of silence filled after the loud thunder.

His expression soften like a bread as his hands starts cupping my cheeks. "You believe in me? Really?" he asked.

I nodded.

The door suddenly opened, and when I looked back, I saw the head master.

Head master eyes were widened, as if he saw a miracle into us. "No!" he shouted before dashing toward us. He grabbed my arm, pulled me up.

"Head master I..." I'm about to explain.

But head master already pulled me outside his room and locked the door.

Before the door closed, I saw Junhui following us. However, Junhui didn't make it. Instead he banged the door. "Let me out! Let me out! Bring her back to me! I need her! Please!"

With my trembling, I looked at the head master and asked, "H-Head Master, w-why? Wh--"

Head master glared at me. "I TOLD YOU! I WARNED YOU NOT TO TALK TO HIM! YOU WILL BE IN DANGER!"

"B-But he said he didn't kill anyone. I heard it. He said his mom k---"

Head master pinned me on the wall and kissed my lips.

As he kiss my lips up and down, my nerves slowly calmed down.

Head master pulled back and looked me into my eyes.

"M-Minghao," I muttered, quite shocked by the thing he did.

"Good thing you already calmed down," he gasped and let out a long sigh. "I won't tell this to madam, but never do that again. Please," he said and he walked away.

I looked at Junhui's room as I held my lips.

Just what is the hidden mystery on his life?
