chapter two

When you live in such a boring place, lake days were considered special treats. Unless you owned a ridiculously expensive boat, or had the money to buy a big ass house actually on the lake, it was rare to ever get out. So, thank GOD for Janae's dad's friend.

Janae and I laid side by side on two high end lounge chairs by the newly placed sand down by the water. The Forrester's, or the people who owned this house, decided to have a little beach installed. I guess it made their property stand out- not that the large acreage, vibrant green grass, stoned pool area, and three huge floors didn't already do the job.

Their house was on the other side of the lake from us. Lake Hydra was easily known as one of the largest lakes in the United States, so when we say other side, we mean it's really about an hour and a half drive in the opposing direction. Great ride for taking a brisk nap.

"I wonder what it's like to have all this money." I said, turning my head to face Janae who could have easily been passed out. If she didn't have her sunglasses on, I'd be able to tell.

I guess she was awake, though, because she turned to face me as well. "It's not all that exciting."

I scoffed, "I forgot. You're dad is loaded."

"Yea, but- it's not like- own a mansion on the lake and have two boats along with 3 jet ski's loaded, you feel?"

I shook my head, no. "You drive a Porsche."

"But that's all?"

"Your sunglasses are five hundred dollar Dolce and Gabbana's."

She took them off and waved them around, "These were from my grandfather."

"Your dad paid for all four years of your out-of-state college tuition to Berkley at once."

"Tons of people decide to do that!" She whined.

"In cash!"

"Okay, fine!" She gave in, "We're loaded!"

I nodded in approval, "Thank you- you know, not all of us have those luxuries."

"Oh, come on." She rolled her eyes, "You drive a brand new Mercedes."

"That I share with my mom, and now my sister because she just got her permit." I added, reminding her that even though it was a semi-nice car, It wasn't completely mine. Honestly, I only get to use it when my parents are out of town. My mom typically has it with her- and she works all day, almost everyday. I really don't ever get to use it.

"Money sounds appealing, but trust me, It comes with a lot of consequences." She explained, fanning herself with her perfectly manicured hands.

"Oh, like what?" I scoffed, "Not being able to decide if you should get botox in your lips or cheeks?"

"How about listening to jealous hoe's mock me?" She clapped back, quickly shutting me up. I flashed her a dumbfounded smile, and returned to relaxing in the comfortable heat. "Are you going on Miles' boat tomorrow? I'm pretty sure we're all spending the night again."

I shrugged, even though I most likely was going to go. I never pass up on an opportunity to get drunk. "Who's going."

"Right now it's Me, Carmen, and Oliver- but Miles did mention something about inviting a few of his friends from school." She said.

I nodded, "I'm sure I'll go- but I start my other job the next morning, so I probably wont drink that much."

There was a small pause- before Janae and I both started cracking up. "Who am I kidding, of course I'll drink a lot."

What was funny about us two, is that we always were the ones who got flat out wasted together. Sure, everybody drank and felt it a little- but no, we were the ones who passed out on the floor at 3:00 in the morning. We were those iconic party girls, as some would say.

"Are you doing the country club again?" Janae asked, referring back to the previous two years I've worked there over the summer.

"Yep- but this year I'm allowed to caddy instead of serve."

She gagged, "I would never want to carry golf clubs around all day."

"But I get to drive the gold carts." I pointed out. I don't know what it is about golf carts that make it so exciting, but I'm telling you, getting the opportunity to drive one all summer is probably one of the best things you could do.

"So, are you working at the restaurant on nights?" She asked, trying to make sure they I wasn't quitting the shitty job we both shared.

Just hearing the word restaurant made me want to die. The one the two of us worked at was terrible. For one thing, the pay was awful. We only got to make minimum wage, and here in Georgia, that was 7.25 an hour. Yea, we got tips- but they magically came out to be about 10 dollars a night after splitting them with everybody who worked that night.

Besides getting paid literally nothing, those who ran the place were horrific. The two owners treated us like we were their pets. We got screamed at, our breaks taken away, shitty customers, and unfair treatment. The only reason why anyone still works there is mainly because the people you work with are great. In fact, my whole friend group is from that place.

Bottom line, though, is never work in the restaurant business. You'll want to die.

I sighed, thinking about how much I hated working at Maldron's. "Unfortunately."

"Just suck it up till school starts again." She suggested, "-Because that's when I leave for school again. Then you can quit!"

"I'll think about it." I teased, even though we both knew that's probably what I was going to do anyways.

It grew silent as the two of us drifted back off into our state of relaxation. This time I was really getting into it- only, the harsh feeling of Janae sinking her fingers into my skin quickly woke me up.

"What?" I snapped, yanking my arm away from her clutch.

Janae didn't say anything. She just pointed towards the direction her sunglasses were facing. When I turned my head to see what she meant, my jaw immediately dropped. As if God was watching, and wanted to make this day even better- six hot guys walked from the inside of the house next-door, out to their dock.

I didn't know how something like this was possible, but for some reason, every single one of them was a tall, glass of water. From their six foot frames, to their noticeable back muscles, each male specimen was its own work of art. Put together, they could have easily made up the most attractive thing in the whole world. They belonged in an art show- and I'm not exaggerating.

"Who- are- they." I gawked, taking my sunglasses off in order to get a better look.

Janae bit her lip, "I'm guessing those are the boys Louise was talking about."

I turned back to her for a second, "Well, what did she say?"

I watched as she pulled out her phone, and navigated her way to her text conversation with Louise Forrester. "Louise mentioned something about a football team that always partied next-door. It was the day I dog sat for them in late May. I guess she wanted me to know that they gave them permission to use their driveway that one time."

"That's a football team?"

She shook her head, "No... only one of them is on the team right now. The rest have graduated- but I'm pretty sure they all played at one point- you know how legacies are."

I nodded, before coming to a shocking discovery. "They're brothers!?"

"Shh!" Janae quickly covered my mouth. I guess I did yell that pretty loudly. "You don't want them to hear us."

I couldn't believe my eyes. "How can one family have six, perfectly looking children?"

Janae shrugged her shoulders, "I don't know, man."

"This is literally so unfair," I complained, "This is exactly the kind of shit that makes me hate myself."

My average exterior couldn't even come close to part of theirs. The fact that some people were able to be visually stunning, and others- like me- couldn't even be relatively pretty infuriated me. Why can't we all be gorgeous?

Janae nodded along, "I feel you."

"This is so not right." I laid back down in my chair, beginning to admire the view once again. That didn't get to last long, either- because one of them caught me staring. Before I could look away, he grabbed his brothers' attention, and directed it towards Janae and I.

The two of us were mortified.

And then they all waved.
