Chapter Nine
Present-day
"Get the fuck out of here," Naomi says. I roll my eyes as I grab my clothes from the floor and shove them into my backpack.
We had to share a room. It wasn't great, but she was fine. I was too busy looking forward to going Go-Karting with Zack and Daniel.
"I'm going," I tell her. I grab the rest of my stuff and start walking out.
"Hey, you uh," she starts.
"What?" I ask.
She shrugs. "Never mind."
I frown and walk out. I pass Daniel in the hallway and grin at him. He grins back and hands me a candy bar. I make my way down the stairs and into the kitchen. Devin's sitting at the table, but it doesn't bother me.
One of the bridesmaids is making coffee. I set my stuff down and grab a mug. She smiles at me and I smile back.
"You're Riley, right? The Best Man?" she asks.
"Yeah. And you're Lydia?" I ask. She nods and pours coffee into my mug. I sit down at the table, pretending not to notice Devin.
Zack walks into the kitchen and smiles as he sits down next to me. "You ready?" he whispers. I grin and nod.
"I only have one question," I whisper back. "There's only two cars, so how are we supposed to get there?"
Zack smiles. "That's the beauty of it. The place is only a few blocks away from the place that we're touring."
"Okay, cool." We both smile.
"How was your roommate?" Zack asks.
I shrug. "Fine. She moaned in her sleep."
I unwrap the candy bar that Daniel gave me and take a bite.
"Healthy breakfast, huh?" Zack asks. I grin and take another bite.
"You want some?" I ask. He shrugs. I take another bite and hand the last of it to Zack.
"You have something on your face," he tells me.
"Okay." I take a drink of my coffee.
"Are you gonna get it?" Zack asks. I shrug. He sighs and then brushes his finger against the corner of my mouth, rubbing away the candy.
"You guys are cute together," Lydia says as she sits down across from me. I open my mouth and I'm about to say that we're just buddies, but then I see Devin.
He's staring intently at his phone, but his body's taut with tension, like something's bothering him. I know it's wrong, but I can't help it.
"Yeah, we are," I say. Lydia smiles. Zack blushes and looks at the candy bar wrapper. Other people start trickling in. Daniel sits next to me, still eating candy.
"You know what I don't get?" I ask him. He frowns. "How you're not out of shape. You eat so much candy."
Daniel shrugs. "I like it," he says.
I start laughing. "Everyone likes candy," I tell him. After a few minutes, I realize everyone is dressed up. I'm just in a t-shirt and jeans.
I hit Daniel. "Are we supposed to dress up?" I ask him. He shrugs. I turn to the right and hit Zack. "Are we supposed to dress up?"
"I think so," he says.
"Fuck," I mutter. I stand up. "I'll be right back."
I grab my bag and walk back up to the room I slept in. I start to open the door, but Naomi starts screaming at me. I shut it quickly and walk down the hallway and try another room.
It's empty, both beds are neatly made. I look down the hallway in a paranoid way and shut the door, shaking my head. I really must be crazy.
I dump my backpack out and dig through my clothes, trying to find something to wear. I swear when there's nothing. I know I packed a dress. I dig in the next pocket and pull out a black dress.
"Fuck, yeah!" I mumble as I shove clothes back into my backpack. I look at the door again before taking off my shoes, jeans and shirt. I'm pulling the dress over my legs when the door opens.
Devin.
I sigh. "Of fucking course," I mutter.
"Sorry," Devin says quietly. I pull up my dress and slip my arms into the straps.
"You should knock," I tell him.
"I didn't think anyone would be in here," he tells me. I roll my eyes as I pull on my white Nike's and zip up my backpack.
"Whatever," I say. I sigh. "Will you zip up my dress?"
Devin glances around the room before muttering something and walking over to where I am. He slowly brushes my hair to the side of my neck. My eyes flutter shut as his fingers trail down my back to where the zipper is.
He takes his time as he pulls the zipper up, letting his knuckles brush my exposed back.
"Listen," he says quietly. "Can we talk about what you said last night?"
"There's nothing to talk about," I say. He finishes zipping up my dress.
Devin steps closer to me and puts his hands gently on my waist. I stiffen at being so close to him.
"Riley," he says. "I want to explain."
"You don't need to." He keeps trying to explain, and I keep stopping him, even though I want nothing more than a reason why. "It was seven years ago," I tell him.
He sighs, his fingers tightening on my waist, causing me to shiver. I sigh. He still affects me the same way.
Devin steps closer to me, his chest to my back. "Seven years," he murmurs, lowering his mouth to brush my ear.
My heart almost stops beating. What is he doing to me? Why can't I push him away?
"Devin," I say quietly. "Why do you keep doing this?" I pause. "You keep trying to explain. You're always touching me, getting close to me."
"Do you want me to stop?" he asks.
"No...I don't know. It's just...we're different now. We're twenty-five, not eighteen," I tell him. "So much has changed."
"I know," he says quietly, his lips tickling my neck.
"I don't know you anymore, Devin. You could be married or engaged—"
Devin releases my waist and steps away from me. He grabs something from the dresser and walks out of the room. He does everything so quickly that I almost think I imagined it. I can still feel everywhere he was touching me.
What the fuck?
I sit down on the bed and smooth down my skirt like it's going to help collect my nerves. What happened? Everything with Devin was fine. He was close to me and giving vague answers. But I said that I didn't know him and jumped away like I burned him.
I sigh and grab my backpack. I try to pretend like I'm collected as I walk down the hallway. Devin was always moody as fuck. It probably doesn't mean anything. Probably.
When I get downstairs, only Zack, Daniel and TJ are left. Devin and the bridesmaids are gone.
"Where'd everyone go?" I ask.
"They left," TJ tells me. I frown slightly. "Devin went with them cuz Ana had space in her car. Which means, we all get real seats!" TJ says the last part with too much enthusiasm.
"You mean I get a seat? I always sat in the middle," I tell him, pausing to glare at him. "Even though you could fit!"
He grins. "Whatever. Grab all of your stuff. We're not coming back."
I grin and Zack and he grins back as we walk out. Regardless of what happened with Devin, Go-Karting will take my mind off of it.
I smile in a self-satisfied way as I slide into an actual seat with legroom. Zack grins at me and I grin back.
TJ casts a look at Daniel and then at me and Zack. "I know what you guys are planning," he says.
Zack and I look at each other and shrug. "What do you mean, TJ?" I say, trying not to laugh.
"I'm really hurt that you didn't invite me," he says. "I love go-karting!"
I shrug. "Last time we went, you almost got arrested."
TJ rolls his eyes. "Whatever. And since you decided not to invite me, I'm gonna be petty and stop you guys from going."
"Buzzkill," Daniel mutters but I can't get Devin out of my head. Why did he go with the bridesmaids? Was it because of me?
