7. The Dark Side

7 years back
Location Unknown

"Never mistake law for justice; Justice is an ideal, and law is a tool."

Won-sia simply stood there, his hot cheek flushed against the cold brick wall as he gazed about the puddles of blood and mud. He has stopped crying and resisting a while ago and now all he could feel was...numbness.

His tear-stained face has long been forgotten and his sniffles had subsided, as he stayed there simply accepting his fate.

Suddenly a sound of heavy footsteps could be heard, "Bring the boy," a raspy voice ordered from behind the dull brick walls. Sia could feel his heart thumping against his chest as he anxiously gazed at the metal door.

The door burst open in no time, and a buffed man stormed in. "Get out." He shouted at little Sia making him quickly get off the ground.

He took a minute to ensure the coast was clear and then tried running passing the man and out of the door.

But he couldn't run very far. For some strong hand clutched him from his jacket collar and lifted him as if he was a piece of garbage.

"Where are you running little one. This isn't what you promised me, is it?" The raspy voice from before, whom Sia had recognized to be of Hauri by now, asked him.

The man was holding him in midair. Sia tried kicking and throwing his hands and legs resisting the grip, trying to get rid of it. But nothing was of any use. He was simply carried out of the building and thrown into a ship.

The entire ride on the ship was silent, for Sia couldn't see anything out of the tinted glass. Nor he could resist for some man was holding him tightly in place.

Being an outcast was not an easy task. For your strength never matches your peers and that can end up turning a whole society against you. Being one of them and supporting a crime felt a lot easier than proving your worth to the kind you were born to.

That's the only reason that would give me enough courage to pass through this life. Though he was not very sure he hoped his decision to stand on this side, to be the right one. And now that he didn't have his best friend by his side, and knowing that he would be believing he was already dead, little Sia could care less.

So, he saw no reason not to agree to them: the RIOTS.

Won-sia looked around as they stepped through the gates with the sign 'Caution. High voltage', taking in the huge building with an ominous red glow, lonely standing in the big yard.

"Follow me," Hauri commanded walking inside and little Won-sia wobbled behind. They passed room by room with nothing inside. Hauri headed over to a door with two gunmen standing by it, and they had already opened the door once they had seen Hauri reaching them from afar.

That place looked more ominous than the whole building itself with metal decors and several weapons that Sia was seeing for the first time in his life. He coiled back into his worn-out jacket and backed away, colliding with the man behind.

"Frightened are we?" Chuckled Hauri as he pushed the kid forward.

In the farthest corner of the white-painted laboratory, were kneeling a bunch of men and women, their hands tied up in ropes. Their white lab coats were sprinkled with crimson blood.

One man among the lot, in the farthest corner of the room, sitting on the floor with his hands tied, like others, was howling out so loud. He seemed have worn off excessive crying and pleading for dear life but seemed determined not to give up. Two other men with different weapons new to Sia, stood by either side of the man.

Won-sia felt a slight tap on his shoulder. When he looked up he could see Hauri beaming over him.

"You said you will be one of us. That's why we spared you, remember? But you can't be until you prove so."

Sia looked down at his hand as Hauri placed the gun on it.

"See that guy over there?" He pointed to the howling man. "He is a very bad man.", he whispered in Sia's ear."He spied on us."

Hauri pointed two straightened fingers at him like a gun, proceeded to close one eye as him took the aim and shoot an imaginary bullet at the man.

"Kill that dog ma boy. Show him the consequences of betraying us."

Sia hesitated for a second. The gun still clutched in his hand despite it been a little wobbly by now.

He wanted to resist. He wanted to say 'no' so badly. But his small heart knew it wouldn't be for any good.

If he wouldn't take the turn in he would definitely end up getting shot at the end.

He stayed still for a few seconds before raising the gun, his small hands weighing with the heavy weapon. He aimed it at the said guy. The man cried, threw his head in all directions, and cursed out loudly of all profanity that little Sia had never heard of his life.

"End him." Hauri howled from behind.

And little Sia took in a deep breath, shut his eyes, and pulled the trigger of the gun.

The cries in the background stopped almost at once, and the gun fell from his hand with a loud clang. He held his shivering hand against his aching chest, his ears still ringing from the gun sound. He could feel the stinging pain behind his eyelids, water pooling and forcing him to burst out.

It's not his first time.

It's not going to be his last.

But one thing Won-sia knew was that he would never see an escape from the guilt or the pain he had allowed into his life.

Hauri's laughter echoed in the space as he cheered for little Sia.

"Keep going. Keep going. Shoot the next one."

He cheered for a little kid who had chosen life over death. And weapons over toys to pay the price of choosing life.

What he didn't see was how one day the same cheers would turn into pleads for his own life.

"Alright. That's all for today's show." Hauri stopped Sia in the middle, leaving about a dozen of people alive.

"Now tie the rest up and put them in the room. Get them to agree with our terms. Kill all who refuse and get the others to the Square by evening." Hauri ordered the people with weapons in their hands.

Hauri looked back at the small boy, covered in blood from head to toe, and a warm smile crept up to the older's face just by seeing the little one.

"You're getting better at shooting," He patted the boy's head and a splash of blood that had gone unnoticed on his mop of midnight black hair stained his hand. His smile got even wider as he crouched down in front of the child.

"Good job little one. Show them who you are. Show them the power of the RIOTS. I'm sure you're gonna make me proud."

Sia looked around the lab, as he stood in the middle; once-white floors and walls were now covered in fresh blood stains.

"Another round?" The man asked and Sia glared darkly at him knowing what very well he had intended by 'another round.'

"Just kidding. But I love it when you glare son. Now come on. We have a lot more to learn before you become one of us."

After all the Earth was not that beautiful of a place. Being special was not that great well.

Sure he had wished things would turn out that way. That the goodness of life would win over the evil. That the light within a man could illuminate the dark side.

But in the end, he had left with nothing but regrets, pains, and too much to deal with in the twelfth year of his life.
