Superbia
Superbia - Pride - Sin of corrupt selfishness
Jacob Davies had it all. He was running the family business which had turned into an empire. He was doing very well in the business world, and he managed to achieve all that before turning thirty.
Two years ago, his parents had died. His brother had become even more reclusive and now lives in some undisclosed address. It was a shame about his parents passing. He didn't care much about his brother though. He was disgusted that he was even related to him. He couldn't cut him out of his life completely since his brother had stocks in his company.
At least that meant, he didn't have to take care of him. If he didn't, he would be forced to babysit some young adult. He wouldn't be able to ignore him since the people would talk. But he did have the stocks and therefore, whatever happens to his younger brother was on him.
As happy as he was, not having to deal with someone definitely below him, people were still talking. Thirty and still no romantic attachments. It wasn't as if he didn't care. It was more like, no one was good enough for him. He wanted someone who would be equal to him. Someone who deserved to be by his side. This weekend he was going to be meeting a woman who came from a good family and seemed to have the merits needed to be by his side.
You were fuming in the car. You didn't want to go to this meeting. You thought your parents understood that you were someone who wasn't interested in developing romantic relationships. You were going to be meeting some man, who your dad was 'friends' with. Business. This was all business. Your parents cared for you no doubt and you had no ill will towards them, but you did wish for them to accept all aspects of you, rather than trying to change the parts they don't like.
The man's name was Jacob Davies. Age thirty. Light skin, black hair. You've seen the man before on television or on your phone. Successful guy, but was he a good guy? Everyone knew about his recluse brother who had never set foot outside. He knew about it, and would play it off as 'I try to help, but he pushes me away.' You didn't care if it was true or not. You could tell there was insincerity. Regardless, you were going to be on your best behavior and turn him down politely if he showed any interest in you.
Jacob had been waiting for you at the restaurant you were apparently going to eat. A recent college graduate and worked under your father's company. He looks at his watch impatiently. You were suppose to being here by now. He wondered what kind of excuse you would try and use. The traffic was bad or was trying to look pretty for today. Any person worth his time had to be able to maintain appointments.
Alas you arrived. You were dressed rather simply for the occasion but you weren't really a person who cared for fashion. You look around and see Jacob waiting there. You walk up to him and greet him.
"Sorry about making you wait. To be honest, I didn't hear about this until this morning." you tell him.
"I'm sure." he says in response. "F/n, right?" you nod. He offers you his arm. "We are already late. Hopefully our table is still reserved." You were already beginning to dread lunch. This man didn't know how to be polite. The restaurant still had you reservation and lunch was anything but pleasant.
Every time Jacob would ask your opinion or questions about yourself, it would end up with him talking more about himself. Annoying. No wonder why he was single. A man with money and power, with standards higher than the tallest building in the world and blind to his flaws. You managed to remain polite throughout but you finally were at the edge when he was paying the bill.
"You are okay F/n. Not at all bad. Not perfect, but not bad. Good family. Good school. Same background. You might even appeal to me more next time we meet." Next time? He was seriously thinking there was a next time. You see him opening his wallet to leave a tip. He put your hand on top of his.
"I will take care of the tip. A thank you for paying for lunch."
"If you insist." You smile and place a deserving amount for the waiter who took care of your table.
"A tip for a waiter." you say after you place the money and grab your belongings. "And my tip for you." you stare him straight in the eyes. "If you want a girl to actually care for you for more than your money, start acting like a gentleman."
"Excuse me?"
"Anyone can be you. Self-centered and ignorant of their flaws. I've had my fair share of dealing with people like you and frankly I am tired of them. Be it romantic or platonic." You walk out of the restaurant with your head held high. You would deal with the aftermath of what you did later, but it felt good to get it off your chest.
Jacob was stunned at what you said. No one ever told him off. He didn't feel happy with you so blatantly insulting him that way, especially when he showed some interest in you. Everyone liked him or at least never acted rude to him. He needed to fix this.
You were waiting expectantly for your parents to call you explaining why you insulted Jacob, but strangely they didn't. You were debating whether or not to bring it up, but you decide not to. You didn't want to bring unwanted troubles for no reason. If they do end up finding up about it, that was a problem for future you.
You drive to work and as you are walking out of the parking lot, you see Jacob. You pretend to not notice him, but sadly he sees you. He calls out to you and you are forced to talk to him. You weren't expecting him to find you, especially after what you said.
"Greetings F/n." he says smiling.
"Hi." you respond.
"I've been wanting to see you."
"Wish I could say the same. Look, I don't want to be late for work so I am just gonna..." you trail off as you are about to walk away, but he grabs your arm.
"Wait." You wrench your arm away from him.
"Why? I thought I established I am not interested in you."
"But I am. And I always get what I want."
"Entitled much?"
"I'm given the right considering what I achieved." You glare at him. "Your parents don't know and frankly, I am offended at what you said to me. Now if you don't want to cause business relations to fray, you will join me for a small car ride."
"Jumping right into the threats I see."
"Coercion sounds better."
"Same difference. But fine." You get in the car with him and notify your superior that something happened and you will be showing up late. You didn't like this one bit. You wouldn't get into too much trouble considering your dad owns the company but you hated exploitation of power. The drive is quiet for a bit, before he starts talking again.
"So you don't like people like me?"
"Not particularly interested in people like you."
"Then who is your ideal type. I'm pretty sure I can be that and more."
"First of all, I don't have a type. Second, I don't think people can change their personality."
"Everyone's got a type."
"I am not interested in getting into relationships. Never was, never will."
"You just haven't met the right person yet."
"If I had a dollar for every time I heard that, I would never have to work."
"Okay, fine. You don't have any romantic interests in anyone."
"Congratulations. You finally made it to the twenty first century." you say sarcastically. "Anyway, are we done. I still have to get to work."
"Nope." he says as the car breaks for a red light. He turns to you. "You don't like me. I want to change that."
"I'm pretty sure I am not the only one."
"But you are the only one who made it clear. I will change your opinion of me."
"Sure, sure. Can you drive me back to work?" You end the conversation there and he does drive you back home. He will give up eventually, you thought. How wrong were you. Every time you kept being standoffish to his advances, he would try harder. He was determined to have you like him.
You were getting more and more annoyed with his attempt. He would constantly being waiting for you outside of work and even your house. You wanted it to end after a month of him doing this.
"What is it going to take for you to leave me alone?"
"For you to like me."
"Oh my God! When will you realize that I will not ever like you?!" you shout at him. "I hate people like you with a passion. You are so self-centered and selfish. Do you know how annoying it is, constantly telling people that you are not my boyfriend or even a friend for that matter?"
Your words hurt. You still didn't like him. Even though he was trying so hard. Maybe it was because you weren't spending much time with him. Maybe if you were with him for longer periods of time, you would like him. After all, you were the only person in his eyes that met the standards he set.
It had been a month since you saw him, and you thought he would finally leave you alone. It was Saturday morning and you were just lounging around at home when your mom called you to come over. Seeing no reason not to, you go over to their home that night.
You thought it would be a simple family dinner, but your ideas were shattered. Jacob was there, making merry with your parents, and you had a premonition something bad was going to happen.
"I didn't think you guys would have another guest come over." you say dawning your fake smile.
"Jacob said he had something important to tell us. He said it also involved you." your mother says smiling. You are seated next to Jacob and your father begins to explain over dinner.
"Now Jacob has been telling us he has been seeing you over the past few weeks, and he has told us he has intentions of being in a relationship with you." you turn to Jacob before you turn to your parents.
"Will you give me a moment with Jacob?" you ask. Your parents permit and you pull Jacob into the hall. "What part of I don't like you did you not get?"
"You will like me F/n. No one has treated me the way you did. I will get you to like me, and if this the way I have to do it, I will."
"You are so insane. How is forcing me into a relationship, especially when you no I don't give a damn about love, gonna get me to see you in a new light."
"Your dad's business is in partnership with mine. I end it, your company won't take too much damage, but people will get laid off. And all because you didn't like me."
"Again with the threats." Jacob leans in close.
"Do you really want to test me? I have been chasing you for months. Just like I said I would. Now the choice is yours, but I won't stop. Not until I got what I want from you."
"Fine. I will play your little game. I will humor you and be your girlfriend. But it won't change a single thing between us."
"We will see." You go back into the dining hall and tell your parents that you and Jacob finally decided to go out. The dinner goes relatively smooth until Jacob decides to blind side you. "I was hoping with your permission, I can have F/n live with me."
"Of course." your mother says, not bothering to ask for your permission. You were about to protest but you notice the look Jacob was giving you. He mouths the word business and you keep shut. If this what he was going for, fine. Two can play at the game.
Jacob's place was lavish. Much more than your place. Was this his way of showing how much power he had. Annoying and gaudy. You find your room and set your belongings there and your co habitation with Jacob begins.
It was surprisingly peaceful between the two of you. Jacob had not made any advances towards you and was acting nice. But you still didn't like the living arrangements. As it went on, you were growing more and more upset. Your parents were so desperate to have you in a romantic relationship that they allowed this to happen. Even so, you grin and bear it.
Jacob on the other hand, noticed the changes in your behavior. You were beginning to be okay around him. Did he miraculously get you to love him? His anticipation that you were going to like him was making much more excited. He has you join him for dinner one night. You agree and the two of you eat in the dining room.
"Did I manage to change your opinion of me?" he asks.
"I don't hate you much." you answer back. You were okay in his presence, but still didn't like him the way he wanted you to. "Guess you managed to achieve what you wanted."
"So you don't hate me? Do you like me?" he asks.
"We went over this. I am not interested in romantic relationships." He thought he could change you. He did everything he could to change you. You still wouldn't budge. He was getting more and more upset. How could you not like him that way? What did he do wrong? In his whole life, he always got what he wanted and did everything perfectly. He had everything, but you still didn't like him.
"What will it take?"
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me? What will it take? I have been spending months trying to get you attention. And then you tell me, you don't hate me much. Do you know how much of an insult that is to me?"
"Is that what you are hung up on?" you ask incredulously. "I was starting to get along with you as a friend. Don't go screwing it up now."
"No. I will get you to love me F/n. I will make it so you have to."
"Jacob-"
"There is no one else who has put in the time and effort to get one person to like them the way I do. Do I have to drive your family to the ground? Do I have to make it so you are locked up here?" You slowly get up as he begins mumbling crazy ideas. If your parents saw this, they wouldn't have even sent you on the blind date. Once you are up and out of your seat, you bolt for the door.
"No you don't." Jacob says before grabbing you and pinning you to the ground.
"Let go, you bastard!" you scream struggling.
"No. You will love me." He begins move one of his hands down your legs. "Maybe it is because you never had a partner this way." You try to kick him but he straddles you. "I am a man who will always get what I want. And what I want right now, is you."
This doesn't feel very prideful to me. I might replace it later on. If you guys got suggestions. Tell me. I am more than willing to put this in the various yandere oneshots book and replace it with something else. Might take a while, but I am willing.
