Chapter Sixty Eight: Cemetery Of The Forgotten

There seemed to be even more mist, after they went through the passage leading to In Between. Hailie needed a minute to get used to the gloomy atmosphere and all-encompassing fog, that felt like covering her entire posture, making her shiver from cold. While Lust's realm was hot and full of splendor, this place was freezing. She had no idea where they were, until the fog fell down, revealing a dreadful but quite ordinary landscape.

"We're at the cemetery?" Hailie asked, not knowing what to think about it. The first place In Between and they were standing in front of a steel gate, inertly hanging on its hinges, like it was ripped off by someone with a great strength. "Oh, and a haunted one." She noticed a blurry figure, wandering through gravestones, like it didn't know where to go. It reminded her of a ghost.

"This is not any cemetery." Something in Pride's look of the face made Hailie even more scared about this place. "It's called the Cemetery of the Forgotten."

"And we're not going any further," Lust categorically replied. "At least, not me and Hailie. We're going to wait here for you."

"Why?" she asked, not sure why the demons didn't want her to set foot on the cemetery.

"The name gives it all away," Wrath said, earning an unfriendly gaze from both Hailie, and Pride.

Seriously, why do I bother to talk at all?

"We're going to the Casino Hell, but to get there, one must go through the Cemetery of the Forgotten," Pride continued explaining. "It's not dangerous for demons like us, but it is for many lower degree creatures and more importantly, for lost souls. Wandering through In Between, they sometimes encounter this cemetery and without knowledge of its place, they never leave it."

"So, it's like a labyrinth." Hailie still wondered why she couldn't go with them. They should've known the road to the Casino Hell.

Lust moved closer to her, like he was afraid that she might get some stupid idea in her head.

"Kind of, but that's not the point. For demons and hellish creatures, this cemetery is located here to make them dizzy and scatterbrained, so they would easily lose their belongings at the casino. But if a human soul finds itself in the cemetery, it starts to forget everything. Why they came here, where they've been going, their life and memories. Simply everything, until they're becoming just an empty shell, wandering the cemetery without a concrete reason, unable to leave it."

It all became clear to Hailie. They've been scared that through their journey she might forget some important things. It was obvious that they didn't know how exactly the cemetery would affect Hailie. She might have been with them, but still in danger.

"What happens after the soul leaves the cemetery?"

Would she have an amnesia for the rest of her life? And what after leaving In Between and Hell? After all, she still was a living person, not dead yet.

The demons gazed at each other, as if they were looking for an answer. Even Sloth didn't have one, although he spent the most time In Between.

"It should regain its memory, but we're not sure. Maybe it also depends on how long the soul was trapped in the cemetery?" Pride shrugged. They didn't have all the answers. "We don't know, that's why it'll be safer to leave you and Lust here, while we go to the Casino Hell."

Besides, the Casino Hell was the last place where they wanted to take Hailie. It was full of demons and horrible creatures, who would be very pleased to hurt or kidnap Hailie. Most of them haven't seen a living human for ages, which would make her a really valuable soul added to their collection.

"Sure, fine." Hailie looked for some kind of bench to sit on. There was one, just at the entrance of the cemetery, but it didn't look encouragingly, because of the rotten wooden boards.

"We'll be back soon," Pride promised and hugged Hailie, like she was afraid to leave her. Truth was, she actually knew that leaving her with Lust was the best option. Slowly, she started to believe that he indeed wouldn't let anybody hurt her.

Hailie watched them open the gates and walk into the cemetery, disappearing after a short distance in the mist that was surrounding all the gravestones and creepy, devastated statues of demonic origin. She didn't like that place, which made her uneasy to stay here any longer. They must've waited, which wasn't a pleasant option.

After a few minutes of silence, she finally decided to sit on a bench. She checked it out carefully, before sitting on it. Lust remained quiet, as if he was listening to the wind howling and all the creepy noises coming from the cemetery. Maybe he was hearing something she couldn't, because he had a very focused expression on his face. It made Hailie timid, so she didn't strike out a conversation, even though she wanted to. There were so many questions in her head and yet she didn't even know how to ask about all those things.

What was her relationship with Lust anyway? She had no idea what happened in the house with Shane. Sure, Lust didn't kill him, but how did Wrath do it? And why? He had no reason at all, especially that it clearly devastated his relations with Pride. They seemed so in love. Why would he crash it all just because of Shane? He supposed to mean nothing to him. It was more reasonable to think that he was Lust's problem and that he was the one who wanted to kill him. And yet he wasn't the one to do that.

"You're thinking about him, don't you?" Lust stopped listening to the wind. They were all alone here, near the cemetery, and he was quite sure that it wasn't about to change soon. "About how it happened?" he guessed, correctly apparently, because Hailie sighed with nervousness.

"It wasn't you who killed him?" she asked once again, just to be sure.

Making it all Wrath's fault would've been so easy, but Lust wasn't going to lie anymore. He learned it the hard way. Relationship couldn't have been built on lies. It didn't lead him anywhere with Hailie. It only made things much worse just when everything seemed to be going in the right way.

"Wrath set it up. He called Shane from your phone and lured him into the house. I wanted to kill him, and I was close to doing that, but I couldn't. I can't see why, but Shane is important to you. And even if it may be hard for you to believe, I want what's best for you. If being with him makes you happy, well, I just hope he doesn't move in one day," Lust joked, making Hailie smile even.

But seriously, he hoped that at least that would be spared for him.

"I can assure you, that won't happen." She doubted that Shane would like to live in that house anyway. Besides, that thought was concerning a future that far away that Hailie didn't even think about it now. Shane was her friend, maybe even more, she wasn't sure about that either. "But why Wrath did it then?"

Lust decided to sit beside Hailie. She looked at him, waiting for the answer, which was, unbeknownst to her, a longer story.

"Wrath did it, because he thought that he's returning the favor." He took a deep breath. He wasn't proud of his past actions, but Hailie deserved to know about them. About it all. "Wrath loved Pride, well, it feels like he loved her since the beginning, but they never were together, not until recently."

"Seriously?" Hailie couldn't believe it. How can one love somebody else for so long, without getting together? Besides, the two of them seemed so happy. How it was possible that nothing happened between them earlier? Like, nothing at all? Maybe they weren't telling something?

"Oh, yes," Lust laughed. "But before Wrath, Pride was in love with a human that was living in our house. A soldier boy named Gregory."

"This rings a bell." She closed her eyes, looking through many histories she read about. Finally, she found the right one in her memories. "The soldier who committed suicide in the attic?"

"Wrath couldn't stand them being together. He was so jealous that he-"

"Killed him?" Hailie's eyes got bigger as she was trying to come up with the ending of the story. "Or rather tricked him into committing suicide, considering that you can't exactly kill somebody. Well, until Shane," she was speaking her thoughts aloud.

"Wrath didn't kill Gregory. He asked me to do it."

There was a sudden silence between them that made Lust worried. It seemed like Hailie didn't take it very well, but he couldn't blame her.

"And now, Pride found out about it," she realized. It was an explanation for their behavior. Pride wasn't angry at Wrath, because he killed Shane. She was furious, because he was the reason behind Gregory's death.

"There are only a few things that I regret. It's funny, because demons shouldn't regret anything at all. What I did to Pride, now, I would've chosen differently. Killing Gregory cost me friendship with Pride and put her on a warpath against me. But most importantly, I ruined her happiness, I took someone who was important to her. I know how it is and don't tell it to others, but I cannot forgive myself what I've done. That's why I understand that Pride can't forgive me too."

He didn't like to show his vulnerable side. For so many years he managed to pretend to be ruthless and emotionless, but he couldn't hide his feelings from Hailie. He didn't want to. The truth was, he regretted killing Gregory. The only thing he regretted more was the fact that he couldn't save Missy.

Hailie put her hand on his, like she was trying to confront him, even though he was the one to blame for all of this. Karma was indeed a bitch. And to think that if he didn't kill Gregory, Shane would be alive as well.

"But she'll forgive you one day," Hailie dared to say, even though she had no right to speak in Pride's name. That was just the thing she believed would happen in the future. She couldn't be sure, but could anybody ever be sure of things that were yet to happen? That's why it was called belief or hope. "Those, who seek forgiveness, shall get one."

He looked into her eyes, making her feel like she was swept out from the ground. She didn't know how to call it. It was just what she felt with Lust. Like something was bringing them back together all the time.

Maybe he wasn't in for serious conversations, but when they were speaking about important matters, it seemed like they just could understand each other.

"Shall I get one from you?" he asked like it was the most important thing for him.

Hailie just smiled. "You already got it."

"Did I?" he teased her a little more, which made her blush.

"Looking at it from a wider perspective, lying is one of the least important things that happened in the Bloody Mansion."

Besides, somehow it was just hard to stay mad at Lust for too long. Just as it was hard to be angry with Shane for all his investigations and privacy crossing.

"And now you're calling the house that way too," Lust sounded just as if he was disappointed, but Hailie knew he was joking around. He didn't really care how the house was being called.

"Better be careful, it's contagious."

He leaned to her and whispered, "Through the kiss, by the chance?"

She started laughing awkwardly, wondering how Lust could get flirtatious in a place like that. In Between seemed like literally the least romantic place in all the worlds.

"I don't know," she replied and stood up, because being so close to Lust was awakening feelings she didn't want to think about. She started walking near the gate, wondering when others would come back. Not too soon, probably. She felt like only a few minutes passed since they were gone and that was probably the truth.

"I know it's not the best place to stay in, but at least we're more or less safe here." Lust was against taking Hailie to Hell or In Between, but now that she was here, he was actually happy to spend some more time with her.

She was looking through the gates with anticipation and curiosity. Cemeteries never scared her, but this one was frightening, and she couldn't understand where that feeling was coming from. The more she was looking at it, the more she was thinking that it seemed awfully normal. Maybe besides shadows that were lurking between gravestones. She wondered who lied here?

"What is actually written on these graves? Names of the souls who got lost in the cemetery?" she asked. "Maybe if a soul could find her gravestone, she would regain her memory. What do you think?"

"It's a very interesting theory, but to be honest, I don't know much about this cemetery. Ask Sloth, when he returns."

She started to think about it more, until her eyes noticed a well-known figure. She narrowed her eyes as if she couldn't believe it. But there he was, standing in front of a statue of an angel with broken wings. He seemed so lost, like he had no idea what he was looking at and why he was in this place.

Hailie looked at Lust, who was focused on listening to any sounds that might've raised an alarm that something bad was about to happen. Then she looked at Shane again. He still was there, looking at the statue, like he was frozen to the ground, or rather like he was becoming a statue as well.

It must've been him.

But then he turned away as if he was about to leave.

"Lust, that's Shane over there!" she screamed and squeezed through the gap in the gate. She was sure that Lust was right behind her, especially that she could see Shane so clearly. But when she started running to the point where he was standing, it seemed like infinity, before she finally arrived at the place. And only then she realized that there was nobody standing here. Not a single soul, even though just a few seconds earlier she saw Shane. "I don't understand," she said and turned to Lust, who wasn't there as well.

The most horrifying part was that even though she was in the place that she saw so clearly from the entrance to the cemetery, now there wasn't an entrance or exit at all. It was impossible. It seemed like a few feet away, but there was nothing in front of her, besides more gravestones.

Feeling more lost than ever, she looked at the statue of an angel with broken wings, that seemed as if it was crying with tears of blood.
