Chapter Ninety Two: Special Dance

Congratulations, Hailie, you just made the biggest mistake of your life. What in the world have you been thinking? Oh right, you didn't think, thought Hailie as she walked into a spacious room with Pride by her side.

Due to the whole morning spent with Pride on doing makeup and changing clothes until they found the perfect match, she felt pretty. A long navy-blue dress she wore was much tighter than she thought at first, but it looked astounding, even on her. Because of the widening bottom of the dress, she felt like a mermaid pulled out of the sea. Like a pretty girl on her very first ball. Her brown hair was entirely straight with some glitter that Pride sprayed on her. And those sapphires she received, they were amazing. But the best thing about Hailie's look was makeup. Pride really went beyond herself, giving her dark aura thanks to smokey eye.

They were each other's opposite. Hailie in her dark outfit, and Pride in white dress, which made her look more like a sweet angel rather than a demon she was. Her blonde curly hair was only emphasizing this feeling, yet no one noticed them when they walked into the room.

It was different from the last time in Hell. Hailie could still remember that once she walked into Casino Hell with Lust, all eyes were set only on them. Back then, everybody froze and started staring at them. Nothing like that happened this time, which was making Hailie beyond happy. Staying unnoticed was just the thing she hoped for.

"Are you nervous?" Pride whispered to her because she felt her hand being slowly crushed by Hailie's tight grip.

"Being here, now it feels like a bad idea."

"Because it is a very bad idea. I told you right away."

The original plan assumed only Pride's presence in Hell. She wanted to visit Greed, especially that she must've felt so alone down here. She could read in between the lines in her letter. Besides, Pride never complained about Hell's parties. That was quite a good and fun part of living here. Of course, she wouldn't trade Earth for parties, not ever. But she can come here from time to time to see Greed.

"Don't lie, you wanted me to go."

Pride smiled. "Maybe a little, but it was your idea."

Hailie swallowed. Yes, it was. Once she heard that Pride was going to leave on New Year's Eve, that was it. Shane already left for New York, and she was not into spending this evening with her parents. Even Molly left for some party with her friends. Staying at home was lame and boring, and she would just feel more depressed and alone.

"Who doesn't like a little risk in life?" she chuckled, but it sounded way more nervous than before.

There was something more to it. Since Lust left, Hailie had a lot of bad ideas, thinking about him. Part of her wanted to see him again so desperately, the other part wished to forget forever.

"You're safe here, Hailie." Not only because she was with Pride, but generally.

"I know, I know." But it still felt weird and dangerous.

"And you look really beautiful. Better watch out for demons, who might want to flirt with you." She winked at her, making Hailie blush.

"One was enough," she whispered, thinking that she wouldn't like demons hitting on her. Right now, she has had enough of a love life. Although she believed she looked pretty, not only thanks to Pride, but due to her parents, who didn't even know what to say as they saw her. They commented on her look breathtaking. Also, that they never saw her that way and Hailie didn't know if that was a good or bad thing.

"Don't worry. I've got your back."

They walked deeper into a room that was crowded with demons and other hellish entities. Some of them even looked humanlike, but most of them had something that was hinting at their supernatural origin. Horns, tails, scales, feathers, fangs, Hailie saw all kinds of kinds. And all the skin colors possible. Two legs, three legs, four legs. She didn't know what to look at, moreover, she didn't know who wouldn't mind her looking. What were the rules in Hell? Could you look someone in the eyes? And what if their whole face was in their eyes? In which one you're supposed to look? And if there were no eyes? Hailie had so many questions.

"Pride-" Just as she was about to ask her a million questions about social rules, the music came to an end and for a moment everyone fell silent. The main door opened, but Hailie had to climb on the toes to see what everybody was looking at.

"Well, nice timing. Always come late for your own party to make an entrance. I used to do that too," Pride whispered to Hailie. She didn't even have to look, but then something caught her eye.

Lucifer, who had a golden-black robe on, was always a sensation. Whatever he had on himself, made everybody freeze for a moment and stare. He had this aura of power and natural beauty. There were no second thoughts about him being an angel, just the one that has fallen. But for the first time he had somebody by his side. Greed, who chose green as her color, as always. The fluffy dress was truly astonishing, and the way she shone because of all the diamonds and emeralds, it made her look like someone as important as Lucifer. Coming down here and seeing that scene, it was not something that Pride would expect.

They slowly walked through the room right to the throne, on which Lucifer sat. Greed stayed by his side, standing proudly and carefully watching everybody around. Somehow, she noticed both Hailie and Pride. Her face became brighter as she smiled at them with joy.

Lucifer spoke up, but Hailie was too distracted to hear anything at all. All these demons around her, it felt like a dream, but fortunately, not like a nightmare. It was like she got transferred to a completely different world and even though she should be scared, she wasn't. For a moment she didn't feel anything. Just curiosity and weightlessness, like she wasn't even here.

"Hailie!" Pride poked her, making Hailie come back to reality. "Are you alright?"

"It feels so weird here. Seeing Lucifer again, and Greed by his side." Both were hard not to look at. They were shining like supernatural royalty. "And demons around. That's just not what I'm used to. I'm still wondering whether it's a dream or not."

Pride pinched her on the arm.

"Aw!" Hailie squeaked.

"See, it's not a dream. But I'll admit, Greed by Lucifer's side, that's not what I've expected." She frowned. That didn't sound too good. "I mean, it's just, it's good for her, I guess. I don't really know how their relationship works if they even have one." The music came back, and Pride noticed that Greed came off the pedestal. "Would you excuse me for a minute? I'll be right back, I promise." She kissed Hailie on the check and quickly pushed through the crowd to talk with Greed.

"Pride! You have no idea how hard it is to walk in this dress," she started off jokingly, hugging Pride tightly. "No dancing for me tonight," she said, although it wasn't quite true.

"Greed, how are you?" Pride looked at her calmly. She seemed more than fine. It's not what Pride expected, but she was happy for her. "I see you worked your way to the top."

Greed caught her by the wrist and pulled aside. The party was not a good place to talk, but there was no other place they could go to right now.

"Not really worked, it just came like that. Lucifer decided to make our, whatever it is, official." She leaned over. "I think he wants to find out where the Boundary Breaker is. He even proposed to make me a queen of Hell if I told him."

Pride opened her eyes wider. "Queen of Hell? Like-"

"Marriage," Greed explained. "But I didn't take his offer. I won't do it." Not in the near future at least. "You don't have to worry."

Pride took Greed by the hand.

"I wouldn't worry about anything that considers you. You're strong, and good-hearted."

Greed started to laugh. "Am I?" Pride became too soft. Few good deeds didn't make a person good. But it was still sweet of her to say so.

"Thank you for staying behind for us."

She waved her hand like it was nothing. Besides, the more time she was spending in Hell, the less she regretted staying. Of course, she played angry and dissatisfied, but it wasn't that bad here. She kind of liked it.

"No big deal. You don't know him as well as I do, but Lucifer isn't as awful as he might seem. It's just important to be on good terms with him." Unfortunately, the seven deadly sins demons weren't in friendly relations with him at the moment. He didn't hold a grudge though.

"Maybe." Pride shrugged. It was indifferent to her. That was partly the reason why she came to the party. "Where did he go?" she asked, noticing that the throne was empty.

Greed swallowed. "You're not going to like it," she said, because for her it wasn't hard to find Lucifer in the crowd.

Pride followed Greed's gaze right to Hailie, who was looking at the table of hellish food. Some of the dishes seemed delicious, but she wouldn't taste them for nothing in the world. Knowing a thing or two about Hell, she was terrified of what it was made of. She didn't spot Lucifer until he stood behind her and spoke out, "It's a great surprise to see you here tonight, Hailie Millis."

Her heart stopped for a moment as she realized who was standing behind her back. Lucifer's voice wasn't something that anyone could forget. She slowly turned around, avoiding looking into his eyes.

"One of the invitations was addressed to me," she whispered so quietly that for a human being it might've been inaudible. Lucifer understood her clearly.

He smirked and held out his hand. "Would you dance with me?"

Hailie's feet froze to the ground.

No way!

But could she refuse the Devil?

"I-I, um-" She didn't know what to say, but then she reminded herself that she can't dance. Her eyes laid on the orthosis she was wearing under the dress, which she slightly tucked up.

Lucifer's eyes followed her gaze. "Right, forgive me, I suppose that's partly my fault," he generously said. Hailie thought that he was right, because it was Lucifer who sent her to the cabin, where Jayson was. And he did it on purpose. To see if she can survive. He didn't care at all about the outcome, and she might've died there. "Let me make it up for you."

He knelt on one knee beside her and touched her leg in the place where she had orthosis. She breathed in sharply as a hot feeling took over her body in a spot where Lucifer put his hand. It was something she never felt before, but it wasn't harmful. On the contrary, this feeling was refreshing, like her body came back to strength.

Hailie looked down, noticing that Lucifer took off her orthosis. She parted her mouth, realizing that it wasn't needed anymore. Her leg was completely healed.

"Now, how about this dance?" he asked once again, standing up.

There was no way Hailie could refuse, so she held out her hand that was trembling from fear. Lucifer took it and showed her to the middle of the room, making a few demons step back just because he walked by them. Hailie tried to find Pride in the crowd, but she wasn't seen anywhere.

"You do know how to dance?"

"Yes, of course," she replied, gazing everywhere around just so she didn't have to look into his eyes.

They began dancing to the rhythm of music that reminded Hailie of a waltz. Even though Hailie wasn't an excellent dancer, Lucifer was an amazing partner and that was enough to help her make the right steps. His grip was strong and confident, making her go around the floor just the way he wanted.

"I wonder how an ordinary human like you managed to charm all of the seven deadly sins demons. Some of them are ready to make a war just for you."

He must've been talking about Lust and Pride since she was closest to them.

"The feeling's mutual," she replied, not able to find a better answer.

"I believe so, and yet, you're just a human. They used to eat people like you as an appetizer."

Hailie wasn't sure if he meant it as a metaphor or not, and she didn't want to find out.

"You say that a human and a demon are something that doesn't go together. Maybe it's true. But then again, I suppose that Hell isn't used to Satan and a demon together as well. And yet it can happen," she dared to say, speaking about him and Greed.

It was bold of her, but so was coming to Hell in the first place.

"Point taken." Lucifer smiled, taking another spin around the room. "What do you know about the Boundary Breaker?" he asked out of blue, making Hailie's muscles tense. That simple thing gave him an answer before she even replied.

"Only what I've heard the last time I was in Hell," she lied, and he knew, but tonight wasn't about tormenting yet another human soul. That wouldn't make him a good host.

Surely, Hailie didn't know where the Boundary Breaker was. She probably was only aware that Greed stole it. And one day he was about to learn the truth anyway. Hailie wasn't the one to give it to him.

But a little fun was always making a party even better.

"Can you look me in the eyes and repeat your answer?"

She tried to calm down, as she looked at Lucifer. At once her eyes became wider. She would've stumbled if not for his reflex. He really was the most intimidating, handsome being she has ever seen. Taking her eyes off him was just as hard as making herself look on the Devil's face.

"Only what I've heard the last time I was in Hell," she slowly repeated, but her voice was trembling during every word spoken.

"Then you know that it was Greed who stole it?" he was teasing her, taking pleasure from her fear and nervousness.

And the more Hailie was getting distracted, the harder it was to think clearly.

"No, she didn't."

"Am I lying then?"

There was no right answer to this question, and since she wasn't as brave as Greed, neither did she have the kind of audacity, she just remained silent. Her breathing became shallow as she began hoping that someone will come and save her. Her reaction was amusing, but how was he not to believe that humans are weak after seeing that one?

"Am I?" Lucifer asked again, showing her sparks of fire in his eyes.

It seemed as if her wish had been heared, because just as she was getting ready to say something at all, somebody stopped them in the middle of dancing.

"Would you mind if I take over my partner from now on?"

Feeling suddenly weak on her knees, Hailie stopped staring at Lucifer and laid her eyes on the demon, who dared to intrude.

It was no other than Lust.
